They were arguably the best. Hackett and Rutherford are both vastly underrated, Tony Banks is in the same league with Emerson and Wakeman, and my favorite of the three (and I'm a 50+ year YES fan, but come on...), and with Bill Bruford, they had a new dimension. He and Collins complemented each others' playing beautifully. I'm a drummer for a long time, and a Chester Thompson fan from well before his affiliation with Genesis, but Bruford has that sound... And surprisingly to me at the time, Phil Collins did a wonderful job as a frontman. And one of the best rock/prog drummers ever.

To clarify for those who insist on comparing the two (but maybe don't understand the mechanics), Phil has a higher vocal range than Peter Gabriel. The closing section here (As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs aka New Jerusalem) was a much easier vocal for Phil. In my perfect Genesis world, there isn't one or the other singing lead vocals - they would be trading vocals and taking the leads that fit them better. Peter has a better sense of lyricism in his vocals - almost like he's an actor playing the characters in the songs - where Phil sustains notes better. Their harmonies were off the charts too. So there. I choose both.

I absolutely adore Phil’s Passion That shows in his eyes!! By the early 80’s I didn’t see it anymore for whatever reason. Maybe singing the songs over and over took that feeling away possibly. All he did was tour, solo and with Genesis of course. He/they will ALWAYS be number 1 in my heart and soul !!! Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to them, it wouldn’t be a good day if I didn’t !!! 🥰😘😍❤️🤘🏻🫶🏻🙏

I like the 76-77 version the best. Immaculately played, no goofs, incredibly performed by the band who were in my humble opinion, at their best then. With Bill Bruoford too, wow.! When I saw the film at the Futurist cinema on Lime Street, Liverpool, summer 1977, it blew my mind. And I don't mind saying, Phil was a god in my eyes then.

Bill Bruford’s performance on Apocalypse 9/8 is fucking disappointed. He’s one of my favorite drummers, but he ruined the rhythm session! 3:50 what the fuck he was trying to do? 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

How could anybody except Phil have done these songs justice? He inhabited these songs and he let them inhabit him. He was such a dynamic performer!
