I process similar to this method. I only have about 150 miles of processing under my belt but during that time I have found what is shown to work well. I put both sides of the road in the center, then take it about 2-3’ from the shoulder and place half then come back and place the other half to a 4 percent crown. The other operators in my area do some pretty different stuff at times but I guess results are what matter the most.

In practice, it seems that if the traffic exceeds road capacity it's more susceptible to gridlock than the conventional intersections it replaced.

1:15 - I'm calling BS. They put a couple of Michigan Lefts near where I live, and traffic accidents are WAY up at those intersections!

Because people don't know how to drive and aren't used to them. I live in Michigan, and make multiple Michigan lefts a day, and I have never seen an accident at a Michigan left.

@@warriyorcat You have WAY more points of contention at a Michigan Left! You've got two lanes to cross VERY quickly in a short amount of time (less than 1/4 mile!) just to get to the U-turn lane, then there's actually making the U-turn, both with MAJOR problems of visibility! This isn't "people don't know how to use them. POINTS OF CONTENTION. LINE OF SIGHT. These are MAJOR PROBLEMS that are NOT THE DRIVERS' FAULT!!! STOP MAKING EXCUSES! The Michigan Left is CRAP!!!

@@shanedk that sucks for you, but the statistics and the entire state of Michigan disagrees with you. Michigan lefts are safer than standard lefts, and are often faster as well. Crossing two lanes, there is a gap in traffic and/or a dedicated lane for traffic making a left AND you're only looking left, and when you do finally turn left you only have to worry about traffic to your right, AND there will be a light or a gap in traffic if done correctly. They are incredibly easy to maneuver, so yes, it is a skill issue

@@warriyorcat How is it a skill issue when you CAN'T FUCKING SEE THE CARS??? If there's ANYONE in the right turn lane when you're trying to turn in, you can't see ANY traffic in the oncoming lanes! Then you have to get all the way across the other two lanes, and THEN come back in at an angle, looking WAY over your left shoulder and try to merge in with no room to accelerate! NO visibility, FIVE points of contention, and NO room to accelerate into traffic, how can that POSSIBLY be safer???

Just search for "Chuck's unprotected left," a VERY challenging one he's using to test Tesla's FSD, but how relatively straightforward it is: Easily look for two lanes to be clear, get into the median, then wait for one lane to be clear and merge in. Better visibility, with fewer points of contention. As challenging as it is, it's still MUCH better than having to navigate a Michigan Left! Actually, I think there are three lanes with the highway he uses, which means with a Michigan left at that point it would be SEVEN points of contention!

It's odd that the description is inaccurate. To complete the Left Turn, you must pass through the intersection, Signal a Left turn, Make a U-Turn, then signal Right and Change Lanes multiple times to get into the Right Turning Lane to Turn Right. There is added complexity that the description leaves out.

Yeah, I suppose it's great for moving cars and trucks, but it's not so great for pedestrians and cyclists, and it certainly doesn't make the area more pleasant for anyone who might live nearby. The street that crosses the interstate becomes more a part of the interstate than a part of the surrounding street network.

two traffic circles would do the same, minus costs of a traffic lights and would set a drive slower point after leaving highway, but yes invent the wheel new again....

If people knew how to pay attention and drive properly we wouldn't need to tear up our intersections for roundabouts. Roadwork is inconvenient. How about we teach people to not drive like idiots instead?

Got interested in the comments. Putting a roundabout on a major arterial road will just make a screwed up traffic mess. 3 lane roundabout should only be used as gimmicks. It's best to use the newer options to better intersections but it also helps to sign the intersection well for best results.
