This makes no sense because most mage projectiles dont have a fixed range meaning your spell would just be cast to where your cursor is and not even reach the enemy champion

When you click past the target, the error in your mouse position to the line you want is <1, when you click near yourself, the error will be >1 (proportional to the distance from mouse to target and mouse to you ). That is to say, any error in your mouse click to the line you want is magnified. You can imagine being 1 pixel off right at your character and by the time the line reaches the target its 15 pixels off. But, if you click near the target and your mouse is only 5 pixels off, the line stays 5 pixels off.
