People can learn to share their distresses in a non-judgemental container. Framing this as "mental health" and interventions mentioned here, focus on the individual, when the causes are societal. Let please stop this nonsense and work to change the problems causing distress. Distress is a normal response to what's going on in the world.

the research base for psychotherapy is garbage and the harms it can cause minimised or ignored - consider William M Epstein's critique - Publication Bias: Epstein highlights the prevalence of publication bias in psychotherapy research, where studies with positive outcomes are more likely to be published, leading to an incomplete and potentially biased understanding of the effectiveness of various therapeutic approaches. Lack of Rigor: He criticizes the methodological rigor of many studies in the field, noting flaws such as small sample sizes, inadequate control groups, and reliance on self-report measures, which undermine the validity and generalizability of findings. Inconsistent Definitions and Measures: Epstein points out the lack of consistency in how terms are defined and measured across studies, making it difficult to compare results or draw meaningful conclusions about the effectiveness of different therapeutic interventions. Overemphasis on Quantitative Research: He suggests that the dominance of quantitative research in the field may overshadow qualitative insights and fail to capture the complexities of human experience and the therapeutic process. Subjectivity of Diagnosis: Epstein argues that psychiatric diagnoses are often based on subjective interpretations of symptoms rather than objective criteria, leading to inconsistency and variability in diagnosis across clinicians. Lack of Validity: He suggests that many psychiatric diagnoses lack validity, meaning they do not accurately represent distinct, biologically-based disorders. This undermines the scientific basis of psychotherapy research that relies on these diagnoses as a framework for understanding and treating mental health issues. Reliability Concerns: Epstein raises concerns about the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses, noting that different clinicians may reach different diagnoses for the same individual. This inconsistency undermines the reliability of research findings based on these diagnoses. Impact on Treatment Efficacy: The reliance on questionable psychiatric diagnoses may also affect the efficacy of psychotherapy treatments, as interventions based on flawed diagnostic frameworks may not effectively address the underlying issues experienced by individuals seeking therapy.

I like these summaries! CBT = pull yourself together. Behaviourist = face your fears Counselling = listening to someone talk about their problems.

In the late 19th century doctors used the phrase "political excitement" to describe the effect of the media on the mental health of many of their patients. In some hospitals this was the most common diagnosis.

I met Sami when he was a young teenager. Our conversation lasted barely 5 minutes. I was left with the impression that I'd met one of the sanest beings on the planet.

Couldn't agree more. The "process of growing up is been confused with mental disorder"

This is so important. I'm a pediatric / psychiatric nurse in search of like-minded professionals in the Boston area. I've felt so lost and alone. Dr Timimi validates me and gives me hope. Where are the other professionals who think like he does?

Really fantastic talk, really engaging moderator and an excellent panel. Absolutely fascinating to hear about the social and ethical side of autonomous vehicles and how divisive the question on "how safe is safe" is.

I loved this. The moderator Chloé was really knowledgeable and excellent at focusing the chat and guiding the analysis. I had not considered the impact on wider social infrastructure. Changing roads and car parks are an obvious link, but the Highway Code and driving tests!?! The impact would be dramatic. This would surely need to be phased in over time. I wonder whether autonomous vehicles /intelligent mobility need to consider how their features can be used by people with disabilities... Will 'universal' features mitigate or exacerbate challenges for those with visual or hearing impairments, for example? Great talk!
