Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 35. The Story of Nuh - Part 3: The Da'wah of the Prophet Nūḥ and Its Reception Part 3 Personal note: السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته This is Part-3 of the summary. Part 1 and Part 2 are commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comments are also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... The last resort and the final response: When the people of Nuh(AS) saw that they had no clear foundation to stand upon, instead of humbling themselves, they resorted to what every single tyrannical regime since the beginning of mankind did. When they could not win by virtue of arguments, they resorted to force, threats, and violence. They said, “If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned.” (Surah Ash-Shu’ara, Ayah 116) This is always the tactic of multiple tyrants from the Qur’an. We see this dynamic in Nimrod from the story of Ibrahim(AS) and in Fir’aun from the time of Musa(AS). This is not the way of a believer. When you have clear and concise arguments, you do not resort to violence and threat. You present the truth and leave the rest to Allah. Threatening and voilence is the last resort of people who realise that they have no chance of winning but are too prideful to accept that they are wrong. Nuh(AS) responded back with a veiled threat. He(AS) preached for 950 years and is, understandably, exasperated. (10:71) And recite to them the news of Noah, when he said to his people, “O my people, if my residence and my reminding of the signs of Allah has become burdensome upon you - then I have relied upon Allah. So resolve upon your plan and [call upon] your associates. Then let not your plan be obscure to you. Then carry it out upon me and do not give me respite. This is the way of a true believer. A believer has so much confidence and trust in Allah that even when the whole society is against him, he will stand up to them and say “Do as you please, I have Allah. And if Allah has not willed, you can do nothing. And if Allah wills, then you will not be able to do anything more or less than what Allah has willed.” It was at this point, after 950 years, that Allah says - وَاُوۡحِىَ اِلٰى نُوۡحٍ اَنَّهٗ لَنۡ يُّؤۡمِنَ مِنۡ قَوۡمِكَ اِلَّا مَنۡ قَدۡ اٰمَنَ فَلَا تَبۡتَـئِسۡ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ ۖ (11:36) It was revealed to Noah that no more of your people, other than those who already believe, will ever come to believe. So do not grieve over their deeds, وَاصۡنَعِ الۡفُلۡكَ بِاَعۡيُنِنَا وَوَحۡيِنَا وَلَا تُخَاطِبۡنِىۡ فِى الَّذِيۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡا ۚ اِنَّهُمۡ مُّغۡرَقُوۡنَ (11:37) and build the Ark under Our eyes and Our direction. And do not supplicate Me concerning those who have engaged in wrong-doing. They are doomed to be drowned. Allah informs Nuh(AS) that no one else from his(AS) nation is going to believe now. Now, the time of preaching is done. And Allah puts one command on Nuh(AS) - he(AS) should not ask Allah about the fate of those who do wrong. As for the ship, it is very likely that no major ship had been built before this at that point of time. So Nuh(AS) did not know how to build such a big ship. Allah directed him(AS) and the ship was build under Allah’s watch and with Allah’s instructions. This ends the entire summary. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 35. The Story of Nuh - Part 3: The Da'wah of the Prophet Nūḥ and Its Reception Part 2 Personal note: السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته This is Part-2 of the summary. Part 1 and Part 3 are commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comments are also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... How did the people of Nuh(AS) respond to the Message? The ٱلۡمَلَأُ are the elite who control the society and people have given them that power out of love, greed or fear. In opposing Nuh(AS), they use mob mentality, rely on the quantity of people that follow them, and their socio-economic privilege to prove that they are right. So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, “We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars.” (Surah Hud, Ayah 27) The elite people are mentioned opposing Nuh(AS) in many Ayahs of the Qur’an. This is exactly like the Quraysh. In Surah Hud, the elite people give four objections to following Nuh(AS) - 1. He(AS) is a man. This is the argument of “If Allah had wanted He would have sent an Angel, we have known you all our lives. You eat, drink, marry, and have kids just like the rest of us. Why should we follow you?” 2. His(AS) followers are all of the lowest class. So privilege of the class of people who follow the message shows whether the message is true or not. 3. His(AS) followers are not intelligent. They don’t have the smartest ideas, degrees, or aren’t known for their smartness. 4. He(AS) does not have any worldly privilege over the elite. Again, we see this same arguments being used at the time of the Prophet(SAW) and even in today’s world. This is the concept that intelligence, quantity, the classes, and the worldly accomplishments of people following something determines whether that thing is true or not. This is the classic tactic of “Look at the superficial things of the followers of a message, not the message itself.” Such a notion has been going on since the nation to be warned. This is why from the beginning of Islam and the Prophet(SAW), we are taught that there is no such thing as classes and nobility being based on which family you are born in. The truly noble people according to Islam are the ones who fear Allah and that is unmeasurable by others. In Surah Al-Muminoon, some additional things are added. The elite people said that Nuh(AS) just wanted to be superior over others. They said that he(AS) was mad, not right in the head. None of the Prophets aim for Political power or superiority over others. Nothing could be further than the truth. This shows that when the heart is diseased, even the more pure thing is interpreted in the most nefarious manner. The piety of a man is now interpreted by the corruptness of the heart. If you are the problem, then when the solution comes, you depict the solution as the problem. The elites projected their power-hungriness to Nuh(AS). Sometimes even Muslims do this, we accuse others of what we have in our hearts. We need to take a good long look in the mirror. Allah says, تِلۡكَ ٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ نَجۡعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوّٗا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ “The house of Hereafter We give to those, who don’t desire to have exaltedness in this world.” (Surah Al-Qasas, Ayah 83) This is the mentality of a believer. The true believers do not have the goal of becoming superior over others, they don’t want to rule and be of the ruling class. This is what Fir’aun wanted and he got it but he got nothing in the Hereafter. The believers want to live a pious life. As for Nuh(AS) being a man, Allah says that He hasn’t sent any Prophet except that the Prophet would be a man who dressed like them. And He never sent Angels but even if He did send an Angel, the Angel would have come to them looking like a man. Then they say that Nuh(AS) has madness. This is exactly what the Quraysh accused the Prophet(SAW) of and Allah defends him(SAW) in the Qur’an against this accusation. Even today, people who study Islam but reject it are baffled as to why the Prophet(SAW) did what he(SAW) did. They can clearly see that he(SAW) had no political ambitions or love for wealth, so they are perplexed as to why he(SAW) would preach such (what they would call) radical message. So they falsely posit that he(SAW) must have had some sort of hallucination and actually believed himself(SAW) to be a Messenger from God. What did Nuh(AS) say in response? The People of Nuh(AS) told him(AS) to get rid of the followers since they are of a low class. This is same motif seen in the Qur’an from the Quraysh and the Prophet(SAW) is told in multiple places - a righteous low class follower is better than a non-righteous high class rejector. This is seen in Surah Abasa and Surah Al-Kahf. Prophet Nuh(AS) also defended the followers in the Qur’an, he(AS) says - وَيَٰقَوۡمِ لَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مَالًاۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْۚ إِنَّهُم مُّلَٰقُواْ رَبِّهِمۡ وَلَٰكِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰكُمۡ قَوۡمٗا تَجۡهَلُونَ And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly. (Surah Hud, Ayah 29) Nuh(AS) was very clear from the beginning that he(AS) had no materialistic ambitions. His(AS) reward was only from Allah. When they accused Prophet Nuh(AS) of being a human, he(AS) accepts it. This is not even a valid accusation. He(AS) never claimed he(AS) was anything else. And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allah will never grant them any good. Allah is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers.” (Surah Hud, Ayah 31) This shows us that when the honor of the Prophets are attacked, the Prophets must respond back. And when they aren’t there to respond, we must respond back for them. This is because an accusation against the Prophets of Allah is an accusation against Allah Himself. The Prophet Nuh(AS) deconstructed and dismantled every one of their arguments in a very logical manner. He(AS) defended the core of the Message. This ends the Part 2 summary. Part-1 and Part-3 are in a different comment. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 35. The Story of Nuh - Part 3: The Da'wah of the Prophet Nūḥ and Its Reception Part - 1. This is Part-1 of the summary. Part 2 and Part 3 are commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comments are also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... What was the content of the Da’wah of the Prophet Nuh(AS)? One evident thing in the Qur’an is that the criticisms that people of Nuh(AS) had about him(AS) and the message are the same criticisms the Prophet(SAW) faced from Quraysh. So Allah is showing the Prophet(SAW) that this is not the first time this kind of opposition has happened. And Allah is also warning the Quraysh and showing them what will happen to them if they go down this route. This similarity is been emphasised over and over again in the Qur’an. And frankly, the same thing is also seen today. We see assumption of superiority because of wealth or status and then thinking religious people are backward. We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day. (Surah Al-A’raf, Ayah 59) The Da’wah of Nuh(AS) in this Ayah combined the three motifs of religion - 1. رِسَالَة - Sending of Message. 2. تَوْحِيْد - Oneness of Allah in worship. 3. آخِرَة - The Day of Judgement. In Surah Hud, Ayah 25-26, we see the same three motifs - Allah sent Message, Worship only Allah, the Day of Judgement is awaiting you. In the beginning of Surah Nuh also, there are the same three motifs. In addition to this, the concept of fearing Allah - تَقْوَة - is mentioned. Obedience to the Prophet is a standard message of all of the Messengers. He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein. Difficult for those who associate others with Allah is that to which you invite them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him]. (Surah Al-Shura, Ayah 13) In this Ayah, the concept of “أَقِيمُواْ ٱلدِّينَ” (Establish the religion) means to apply and uphold the commandments of religion in your personal life (as much as you can). This demonstrated by a majority of Prophets who did not establish a political regime and yet did “أَقِيمُواْ ٱلدِّينَ” (Establish the religion) in their personal lives. Having an Islamic political system is good but it is not the primary agenda of Islam. If you have it, it’s good. And if you don’t, you can still enter Jannah by perfecting Islam in your personal life. وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَقَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَٰهٍ غَيۡرُهُۥٓۚ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?” (Surah Al-Mu’minoon, Ayah 23) From all of these Ayahs, we learn multiple things - 1. It is very clear that people of Nuh(AS) worshipped many idols. 2. It also appears to be the case that they either rejected Allah or they neglected Him so much that it was as if they did not believe in Him. 3. The People of Nuh(AS) did not believe in the Day of Judgement. Nuh(AS) reminded them about Resurrection and that they should prepare for it. This is similar to Quraysh. All this is somewhat akin to Quraysh’s religious practices. They knew the name “Allah” but they distanced themselves so much from Allah, that they did not worship Allah except in dire life-or-death type of situations. In normal life, they worshipped the intermediaries. What is the core concept of idolatry and how did Nuh(AS) counter it? The general rule of global paganism from the beginning of times is that they believe in One All-Powerful God but they make this one God so unapproachable and distant from the world that it is as though His Existance plays no role in this world. The Prophets like Nuh(AS) came to dispel this notion and to remind them that this one God is the only God there is and He has tremendous relevance in day-to-day life. Surah Nuh shows the Prophet Nuh(AS) telling his(AS) people about basic observable realities like the sky with the celestial bodies in it, the sun, the growing of people like plants, spreading of Earth to walk upon, etc. Nuh(AS) is saying that Allah is involved and He has created all of the things they see. This is also the same argument the Qur’an uses against the modern thinking man. مَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تَرۡجُوۡنَ لِلّٰهِ وَقَارًا (71:13) What is amiss with you that you do not look forward to the majesty of Allah Nuh(AS) says this to them. This shows that the hearts of these people did not give Allah the sanctity that He deserves. The way that pagans do this is that the primary God becomes too distant and detached from your life. The Primary God becomes a God who has no real connection with you. When this happens, then the love and fear that the primary God deserves to get, is given to the intermediates. Instead of a real connection with the real God, a false connection is formed with all these idols. What were the tactics of Nuh(AS)? In Surah Nuh, we see the constant efforts of Nuh(AS). He(AS) did everything he(AS) could. He(AS) called them to the truth night and day, in private and in open. At times, he(AS) entices the people with promises of abundant rain and children, gardens and rivers. Sometimes, he(AS) uses emotional arguments - “I am scared for you”. And other times, he(AS) uses the spiritual argument of forgiveness. So in a nutsell, the tactics vary. After preaching for 950 years, Nuh(AS) lost patience. He(AS) made a Dua to Allah complaining about their response and their obstinance in not accepting the truth. From this we learn that the Prophets used and preachers after them should use all these types of tactics because different tactics can be effective with different people. All of them are legitimate since Allah created people differently. What is the message behind saying the story of Nuh(AS)? The primary audiences are the Prophet(SAW) and the Quraysh. The story of Nuh(AS) is a skeletal replica of what the Prophet(SAW) is experiencing in Makkah with the Quraysh. The Prophet(SAW) is being consoled that he(SAW) is not the first to experience this. The Quraysh are being warned not to go down the path that the disbelievers before them went. If they do, what happened to the people of Nuh(AS) will happen to them as well. Then, even we as secondary audience learn from all this since the Qur’an is universal. We learn the true fragility of mankind who, even after millenia, could not come up with anything new to counter the truth. It is the same arguments against the truths over and over again. This ends Part-1 of the summary. Part-2 and Part-3 are in a different comment. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

Taking an impartial view of the situation, it seems logical to lean towards version 3. As you mentioned, it could be viewed as a strategic alliance aimed at persuading the Quraysh to embrace Islam, similar to the transformation of the Tawaf ritual from a pagan practice to an Islamic tradition. When engaging in persuasion, conversions, and forming alliances, it's often necessary to make various compromises and strategically accept certain aspects of the situation.

This question is something that every genuine believer or truth seeker asks. I wouldn’t have reverted to Islam if I didn’t search for the truth. Also, the issues that we have with some born Muslims is that they are often simply culturally Muslims and blindly follow tradition without the essence.

salaam to my brothers and sisters. I did not watch the video but I want to post what happened to me. I live in Britain and I hired an arabic teacher online who lives abroad. She seemed ok I thought. Then she got very interested and was writing down all about my life - job, children, their ages. She even wrote things like 'I made a mistake giving birth". astigfirullah. I only realised because I copied all the arabic text from zoom meeting and after the lesson I used google translate. She then was making me recite what I thought was a motivational speech. I did not realise, this was more like a spell asking something to rise up and man up. I got the worst illness of my life at this point. alhamdulilah Allah guided me and I realised what had happened. reciting Quran (surah an-naas, al-falak, al-ikhlass). When my husband burned chillies (this is from Pakistani culture too) there was no bad smell from it. Anyway now I know where it came from, I am getting better. but please please please protect yourselves. you don't know who you talk to and what their intentions are. trust your instincts (I had a negative vibe from her but was continuing as didn't want to be mean or impolite). brothers and sisters, please protect yourself. fast, do salah give to charity, do duas and dhikr. I hope this comment can help even one person. (by the way, at first I thought it was just evil eye that was unintentional. even when she asked me 3 times for my birthday, I had a feeling I shouldn't give but I didn't want to lie. Now I realise I had no reason to share personal information even it was being done in pretext of teaching me arabic translation. Allah is Malik-al-Mulk, Dhul jalaali wal ikraam, He is Ar-Rahmaan and Al-Kareem. The Shayateen will burn in Hell forever. I am so glad to have been saved. alhamdulillahi rabbil alameen

Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 34. The Story of Nuh - Part 2 Part - 2. This is Part-2 of the summary. Part 1 is commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comment is also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... How to reconcile the names of idols of people of Nuh(AS) being the same as the Arabian idols at the time of Islam? Wadd was worshipped by the Banu Kalb in the pre-Islam era. He was the national God of the Minaeans in the South Arabia. He had the symbol of snake associated with him. His idol was located in Dumat al-Jandal. The Prophet(SAW) sent Khalid ibn Al-Walid to destroy it. Suwa’ was destroyed by ‘Amr ibn Al-’Aas. Yaguth, Ya’uq, and Nasr were also found in other places. Ibn Abbas said, “The idols of the people of Nuh(AS) was then adopted by the Arabs. And so, Wadd was worshipped by Kalb, Suwāʿ by Hudhail, Yaghūth by Murād, Yaʿūq by Hamadān and Nasr by the Yemeni tribe of Ḥimyar.” There is archaeological evidence for this and it is well-known that the Arabs worshipped these in the pre-Islamic era. This poses a slight problem. When Allah sent the flood, clearly the people of Nuh(AS) and their idols were destroyed. And clearly, everybody post-flood is a monothiest. Everybody is a Muslim. Nuh(AS) is the father of every single civilisation post-flood. Many Millenia go by. And yet we find that the Arabs had the exact same names of the idols that the people of Nuh(AS) had. How did the Arabs get the exact same names when no traces of idols or idolaters were left? Imam Fakhr-ud-Deen Ar-Razi raises this question and leaves us pondering. This has been explained in 3 main ways - 1. Ibn ‘Ashur says, “Some people have said that when Allah mentions, in Surah Nuh, the story of Nuh(AS) and then He says in the middle of it - They said: “Do not abandon your deities; do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, nor Yauq, nor Nasr.” (Surah Nuh, Ayah 23) - this Ayah refers to Quraysh speaking and not the people of Nuh(AS). But this is a bit far-fetched.” Side-note: The fact that they were trying to solve the problem shows that this same question has come up in the minds of the Quranic interpreters. 2. Ibn ‘Ashur continues saying, “In my opinion, the idols would have been destroyed in the flood. However the descendants of Nuh(AS) were warning the children about the Gods pre-flood. And so the names - Wadd, Suwa’, Yaguth, Ya’uq, and Nasr - remained amongst the children of Nuh(AS) as the names of false idols and gods. And they were warned constantly about these idols and therefore, the names trickled down. Then when ‘Amr ibn Luhayy** reintroduces idolatry to the Arabs, he took the names that remained and reintroduced the names.” 3. Another possibility is that we are not obliged to have the exact same names for the idols at the time of Nuh(AS). When Allah mentions the names of idols, He is using the names of the Arabian idols but the concept of idolatry is the same. The idea remains the same even if the names are different. **Footnote: ‘Amr ibn Luhayy is mentioned in the Hadith as the man who introduced idol-worship in the Arabs. He brought back Al-Lat from the Roman civilisation and instituted that idol in front of the Kaaba. Was the flood global? We, as Muslims, do not have to believe in the global flood. We do not have to believe all animals and creatures were destroyed on Earth. The notion of a flood destroying the whole mankind on Earth is from Bible. It is also interesting to note that there has been a notion of a great flood destroying the whole Earth in almost every single civilisation, even the ones excluded from the mainlands. This has caused people to go down two routes - skepticism or faith and belief. This ends the entire summary. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 34. The Story of Nuh - Part 2 Part-1 Personal note: السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته This is Part-1 of the summary. Part-2 is commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comment is also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... When did Nuh(AS) live? We do not have any archeological evidence and there is no timeline mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah so we do not know for sure. We know for sure scientifically that human beings have lived on Earth for more than 150,000 years. The recorded(written) history of mankind only goes back to 3000-4000 years. Prior to that, there is just signs of mankind which are being discovered here and there. We don’t have a shred of evidence about factual information about dynasties and more from the ancient history(more than 5000 years ago). From the theological point of view, we know for certain that Nuh(AS) was the first رسول (Messenger) sent on Earth to mankind. So he(AS) was the very first person who was sent to a nation that rejected him(AS) and did not believe in Allah and him(AS). People of Nuh(AS) were the first rejectors and the first nation/civilisation that Allah destroyed. So we believe that Nuh(AS) lived very early on in human history. The difference between a Messenger and a Prophet (نَبِي) is that a Messenger is initially rejected and will have to prove himself to the audience whereas a Prophet is sent to a nation who accepts him and might even be expecting him to come. Adam(AS) was the first Prophet and Nuh(AS) was the first Messenger. When Allah wants to set a timeline, the Qur’an inevitably begins with Nuh(AS) which clearly indicates how early on he(AS) was alive. His people rejected him(AS) and so he(AS) is the first Messenger. Evidence for this: 1. Indeed We sent forth Noah and Abraham and established in their line Prophecy and the Book. (Surah Al-Hadid, Ayah 26) So Allah clearly mentions that every Prophet and Messenger that came after Nuh(AS) is from Nuh(AS)’s progeny. And every Prophet and Messenger that came after Ibrahim(AS) is from both Nuh(AS)’s and Ibrahim(AS)’s progeny. 2. In Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 163, Allah mentions a long list of Prophets and starting that list is Nuh(AS) and says - إِنَّآ أَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ كَمَآ أَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ نُوحٖ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦۚ Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. 3. From the Hadith, the Prophet(SAW) said, “Every single Prophet since the time of Nuh has warned his people against Dajjal.” 4. From the famous Hadith in Sahih Bukhari, the people will go to Nuh(AS) and say to him(AS), “O Nuh, you are the first Messenger Allah sent.” The Qur’an and Sunnah indicate very clearly that Nuh(AS) is the first Messenger on Earth. It can also be posited that Nuh(AS) is the first Prophet on Earth too. Adam(AS) is an exception, he(AS) came down as a Prophet and this situation is unique. Nuh(AS) can be said to be the first Prophet on Earth through an Angel. Idris(AS) is said to be between Adam(AS) and Nuh(AS) but the reason Muslim scholars say this is Biblical. There is no reason for Muslims to place Idris(AS) before Nuh(AS). Perhaps the Qur’an, in Surah Maryam, seems to suggest that Idris(AS) is actually from the progeny of Nuh(AS). In this case, Nuh(AS) would be the first Prophet and Messenger on Earth (through an Angel). It is not categorically said, but it is possibility. There is no controversy over the fact that Nuh(AS) was sent to an idolatry nation. This means that idolatry was introduced sometime between Adam(AS) and Nuh(AS). The first human beings were monotheists. The Qur’an is very clear on this - Surah Yunus, Ayah 19. And this is logically approved. Therefore, Nuh(AS) was sent because monotheism was corrupted. The concept that monotheism was first and then polytheism came is a concept in our Islamic theology. This is contrary to the modern anthropologists and archeologists who believe that monotheism was later constructed. The difference between them and us is that they don’t believe in our books. The Qur’an is explicitly clear that monotheism predates polythiesm. The people of Nuh(AS) were the first nation amongst whom idolatry became completely prevalent and nobody remained upon تَوْحيد (Oneness of God). From what it appears in the Qur’an is that monothiesm was dominant at first, then it split and became into monotheism and polytheism and then, polytheism slowly took over and monotheism disappeared. This is when Allah sent Nuh(AS). How many generations between Adam(AS) and Nuh(AS)? The famous but weak narration in Sahih Ibn Hibban where the Prophet(SAW) was asked how many generations were between Adam(AS) and Nuh(AS). It is reported that the Prophet(SAW) allegedly said “10 generations”. Ibn Abbas also said a statement - Between Adam(AS) and Nuh(AS) were 10 generations, all of them upon تَوْحيد (Oneness of God). We find this notion of 10 generations to be in the Old Testament. Ibn Katheer and other scholars says “If Nuh(AS) lived 950 years, then all people in his generation must have lived for 950 years. And the people in the previous generations must have lived for a longer time.” This is plausible. The bottom line is that it doesn’t destroy anything in our theology. If the distance between them was 10 generations or more or less, it is not problematic and there is no way to know the correct stance. It is all unknown to us. One doesn’t have to believe in the statements of the Sahaba. All we need to believe in is that Nuh(AS) lived for 950 years as that is mentioned in the Qur’an. How did idolatry begin in mankind? From the sayings of Sahaba, especially Ibn Abbas, their opinion is that idolatry began in the people of Nuh(AS) by venerating righteous people. They had a lot of Gods but 5 were the most important Gods. Allah mentions the names of idols of people of Nuh(AS) in Surah Nuh - Wadd, Suwa’, Yaguth, Ya’uq, and Nasr. The 5 were names of righteous people. After they died, people built images to venerate them. After a while, they started associating and worshipping them. This does make sense. There is nothing wrong with narrating this, we can believe it or not. The first idols were created as reminders of a person’s piety and over time, people forgot their original purpose and began worshipping the idols. This ends Part-1 of the summary. Part-2 is in a different comment. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 33. The Story of Nuh - Part 1 Part-4 Personal note: السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته This is Part-4 of the summary. Part 1, Part 2, and Part-3 are commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comments are also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... Information about Nuh(AS) from the Sunnah - Very little is added about Nuh(AS) from the Hadith. We gain some theological points. Hadith 1: Tesitfying for Nuh(AS) on the Day of Judgement. On the Day of Judgement, the people of Nuh(AS) will say to Allah “We didn’t get a Messenger.” Nuh(AS) will say, “I was sent to you.” So Allah will say to Nuh(AS), “Who will be your witness?” Nuh(AS) will say, “Muhammad(SAW) and his(SAW) nation will testify that I preached my people.” Allah will ask to us, “How do you know?” We will say, “We believed in the Qur’an and in our Messenger(SAW). And our Messenger(SAW) told us that Nuh(AS) was sent to his people. So we will testify because we believe.” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) Hadith 2: The Farewell Address of the Prophet(SAW). The Prophet(SAW) said, “O my people, every Prophet warned against Dajjal from Nuh(AS) onwards. I am going to tell you something nobody told the previous generations and that is that he will only have one eye.” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) Hadith 3: The weak Hadith in Ibn Hibban, narrated by Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari. The Prophet(SAW) said, “The first رسول (Messenger) is Nuh(AS).” The Hadith is weak but this concept is sound and it is pretty much understood in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Hadith 4: Nuh(AS)’s advice on the deathbed. Narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Aas, the Prophet(SAW) said - When the Prophet of Allah Nuh(AS) was about to die, he(AS) said to his(AS) son, “I shall give you my last will and testament. I am commanding you two things and I am forbidding you two things. I am commanding you with لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله. For verily if the 7 Heavens and the 7 Earths were to be placed in one scale and لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله is placed on the other side, لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله will be heavier than the 7 Heavens and the 7 Earths. And I command you to pray. And I forbid you from Shirk and I forbid you from Arrogance.” (Musnad Imam ibn Hanbal and others, graded حسن - Authentic) Ibn Abbas is authentically reported to have said that the Prophet Nuh(AS) lived 10 generations after Adam(AS) and all those generations were on تَوْحيد (Oneness of Allah) and then Nuh(AS) came. Opinions of the Sahaba (about stories in particular) are viewed with high respect but it is not at the same level as the Qur’an and Sunnah, therefore it may be narrated but it should be known that it is not definitive. Ibn Abbas could have got it from the Prophet(SAW) and it is equally probable that he got it from Ka’b Al-Ahbar (a former Rabbi). It is also interesting to note that Genesis and Deuteromony also uphold the notion of 10 generations. With that mind, there could be 10 generations between Adam(AS) and Nuh(AS) but we do not know for sure. This ends the entire summary. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair
