I wonder if it was the palantir that corrupted Saruman? And to be fair, he was a Maia as well as Sauron. His voice was persuasive and there was a chance he could've used the palantir to control Sauron. Rather, maybe it was a risk he decided to take while still pure-hearted, but one which failed. He might've even known Sauron as Malion - they were both students of Aule. So would he have become evil if he hadn't used the palantir? Is Sauron solely to blame for his fall? Just a few conjectures. Also, I find it ironic that Tolkien emphasises the importance of compassion in his writing, but he shows none for orcs - who are corrupted through no fault of their own, yet have no chance of salvation - or Gollum, who ends up boiled alive in mt doom. Could not Tolkien have created one kind orc? Or couldn't he have saved Gollum, so that the ring went into the molten lava, but not Gollum? Both of these seem cruel to me. Another point, I'm not sure how a study from some US university is relevant to Tolkien's world. If it's the one I'm thinking about, it was unethical and it was poorly conducted. Lastly, Faramir also was another hero in that he resisted taking the ring and spared Gollum's life when Gollum sneaked his way into their secret headquarters, the pool. I don't understand why Peter Jackson had the soldiers beat up Gollum in the movie. The character of Faramir was meant to be good and noble.

If Glorfindel was so powerful, why didn't he rid Moria of Durin's Bane? And why didn't he clear Cirus Ungol of Shelob? And why didn't he go to Minas Tirith to help against the nazgul there? After all, Glorfindel wasn't a man either, he was an elf.
@sakemp3480Күн бұрын
@fred20097 because 1 the elves were leaving and 2 he wasn't trying to die again... he got a power boost but he still isn't a maiar. Everyone who fought a Balrog died. And it wasn't for the elves to help Gondor to fight while ushering in the dominion of man with the battle of Minas Tirith. There was 3 elves for that. And if he went at Shelob who pathway was hidden, he might as well went at Sauron.... where he'd of lost.

@@sakemp3480 We saw the White Council deal with the ringwraiths in Dol Guldur, if they ran in a panic from just the presence of Glorfindel - I'm not so sure Sauron coulda survived that fight-not that Glorfindel would have walked away unscathed. Maybe his mission was much like the Ishtari, to help and inspire elves, dwarves and man stand against the darkness?

@dspencer1969 he scared the the Angmar King and Glorfindel had a vision where he said no man will kill the Angmar King in the books during the late 2nd or early 3rd age. And if you're saying we saw, then let's be frank, the movies aren't the books and changed things and added to it. It was Saruman who bossed up on Sauron in Dol Guldur. Gandalf stated so in the books. Glorfindel wasn't about to beat Sauron... he'd would have did better than Galadriel though.

Did Glorfindel leave middle-earth when Gandalf, Elrond, & Galadriel did? Was he with Elrond & Gilgalad during the battle with Sauron? Considering his previous behavior I find it hard to believe he'd stay safe in Rivendell while the rest of them were fighting Sauron when he had single-handedly fought a balrog of Morgoth and won and so earned reincarnation. I got Glorfindel and Gilgalad mixed up during an earlier episode but it seems to me that Glorfindel should hae been the one to lead the elves against Sauron becasue he had greater power than any of the others.

Yeah, there is one problem, the lightsabers do not give the power of force to the wielder, regardless of who they are, only the ones, who already have a connection to force can use the lightsaber to its full potential, and Melkor definitely could not have a connection to force, because he was from another universe, with different structure and laws of nature, which means, that it would just be a sword, that cuts anything So it would not be suitable for a use such as magnifying the existant abilities or especially, no world size creepy radio to seed hopelessness and despair into the hearts of men

The shame wasn't in breaking the oath, but in taking it. Feanor and his sons were basically mass murderers. As for what I would've done, that's a difficult question. Breaking an oath was so much more sinful during the period and culture that Tolkien's world is based on. Look at what happened to the people who broke their oath to isildur - they became the army of the dead. You just never broke an oath full stop. Most people today don't understand that. The short of it is that you should never make promises you can't keep lol

I don't think Elrond left Middle Earth hopeless. I think he, Arwen, and Aragorn (not to mention Legolas and countless others sundered from loved ones by the divide between mortals and elves) held out hope and trusted that even if they would be separated until the ending of the world, they would be reunited in a future beyond the circles of the world. A higher power like Eru Iluvatar could not design things otherwise and still be benevolent and worthy of the power he had.

My theory is that overall, Turin never was cursed. After all, he was lucky in so many ways, like getting to live with elves or slaying Glaurung or being a great warrior from a noble house or never ending up in Angband or not dying from plague or not being the one who got hit on the head in the gorge. And we all have our bad patches. But that's just my opinion. If he'd really been cursed, he would've perhaps grown 2 noses or turned into an onion every week on Thursdays - that sort of thing. Lol clearly Morgoth didn't have much imagination. And as for Nargothrod, the elves didn't have to listen to him when it came to building that bridge. And why did he wait until Glaurung suggested it to him to go and find Morwen and Nianor?
@RonnieLeeDuck6 күн бұрын
I reread the Silmarillion recently. Tolkien made Turin into a highly driven, great character. But Tolkien tests my limits with Turin. It's one thing to make Turin have a level of arrogance and stubbornness that turns tragic. But to a degree Turin comes off as a outright jerk and an @hole. The whole story comes close to collapsing because I start not to have any sympathy with him or those who associate with him. I mean, he is a great warrior. But he has a bad attitude that makes him not worth the trouble. That is not tragic.
@TalesOfTheRing6 күн бұрын
That's a really interesting take! I love how you highlighted Turin's "lucky" moments-he did have some incredible achievements despite everything. Slaying Glaurung alone is no small feat! And you're right, Morgoth's curse wasn't exactly creative when it came to Turin’s physical form-no extra noses or onion transformations in sight, haha. But Turin's tragedy always felt more tied to his choices and circumstances rather than just the curse itself, which makes him such a complex character. And yes, the bridge in Nargothrond... a perfect example of how sometimes even the wisest can get caught up in bad decisions. You’ve definitely given me something to think about. Why did Turin wait so long to search for Morwen and Nienor? That’s a great point! Maybe part of him was still caught between pride and guilt. Would love to hear more of your thoughts! 😊

Húrin Thalion’s story is absolutely gripping-his defiance against Morgoth, the unimaginable torment he endured, and the way his every action seemed to ripple through Middle-earth, bringing both hope and tragedy. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? If Morgoth’s curse twisted even the noblest of Húrin’s intentions, was there ever a moment where he truly had control over his fate, or was he always bound to be a pawn in the Dark Lord’s grand design?
@TalesOfTheRing6 күн бұрын
Húrin's story is one of the most tragic and compelling in all of Tolkien's works, no doubt! His defiance against Morgoth-"You are not the Lord of Men, and shall not be!"-still gives me chills every time. That moment alone shows how strong and unbreakable his spirit was, even in the face of the Dark Lord's power.
