This looks really GOOD! Fortunately, You Tube has it in full.

I can get mood altered by a piece of music --- and this opening is definitely on the list.

I have just spent over an hour with this beautiful haunting music in my head trying to figure out what movie it was from. I had no idea. I’m losing my memory and am writing down everything that has had meaning to me. Then the name John Dankworth popped into my head. Took a chance it was him. Went on IMDB -- looked down the list and the minute I saw “Return from the Ashes” I knew instantly. It is now on the list.

I saw this movie on TV over 50 years ago as a pre-adolescent. Back then, you only could hope that it would come on again sometime in the near future and watch for it in TV GUIDE. It might come on in a few months or years later. No VHS, No CDs, no ability to record it, could only hope for a repeat. -- and then -- go to the record shop and hope that you could find the (soundtrack) album from the movie. How times have changed. Never would have dreamed that I could watch the movie, or listened to and watch this opening scene -- anytime I want on a device the size of a small pamphlet. What will things be like in another 50 years ?

Don't wait for another minute. Buy a copy of Michael Powell's autobiography, A Life In Movies. One of the very best books I've ever read. Excellent chance you'll agree with me.

I've seen this movie many times. I absolutely love it. Everything about it is absolutely brilliant and clever. I didn't realise that I had seen Kathleen Byron before the British 1980s television series called Together. She is so very young in A Matter of Life and Death. In Together she's about 50 and she moves slowly and behaves a lot older. Cleo Laine sings the title theme ♥️🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️

Interesting, I looked this up after watching Phoenix (2014) which is based on this film/book. Phoenix also has a very strong opening scene I think though it's completely different to this one in that it presents the character as very emotionally present rather than numb.

I first saw this movie in the 1980's and I love the theme song. It's such a great movie. That Maximilian Shell is hunk. He was good in the Nuremberg Trials and excellent in The Man in the Glass Booth. He also played a bad guy in The Odessa File.

I think you were watching a different clip to the one I put up. The guys who made this movie were way ahead of their time and they had great respect for all creatures, including humans. Get a copy and watch the whole movie, you will not be disappointed.
