I was born in Stella and went to Blaydon west school, I used to walk past pumphreys roasting rooms smelling that lush Coffee every morning walking to school, had loads of fun when a was a kid there playing in Stella woods, it had a mint BMX track that went from the top near the loning al the way doon to the bottom of the hill, and in the winter you could sledge doon Summer hill, I spent most of my time playing there, happy days collecting conkers an that it was mint, then i moved to Hazel road and played doon the dene, and Blaydon burn on our motorbikes, what a great place to live so many happy memories. Thanks for all those photos and memories, I love the video well put together and loads of work must have went into that nice one👍

End of our street - I was in school when they filmed this. The area was chosen because of the magnificent views of the Tyne which sadly never made the cut, odd that.

What a gem. I was born in Lincolnshire but my Mum and her family came from Blaydon and Winlaton so after many visits in my youth I am very familiar with the area around this time. Such happy memories yet so sad in a way looking back and now living in the divided, confused and uncertain world of today. I'm still around but I doubt that lovely shiny mini is!

Yvonne. You mentioned Hawkeys Lane baths. I’m a North Shields kid from Balkwell Green and we used to go there regularly as a gang of about 12 of us aged 8 upwards. Great times. I have to say that the water in Hawkeys Lane pool was the coldest you could ever go into. Literally ice cold. It was a pleasure to walk to Tynemouth and sneak into the outdoor pool there. Salty air. Salty water. Sun on your back and not a bloody care in the world. Such a pity when they decided it was no longer viable and closed it..

Aargh Dennis what happened to those days I can still remember the jazz bands in the 70s but it was dying slowly abit like the fabric of local society

I much preferred it to Hawkeys Lane baths. I remember beauty parades and knobbly knee competitions. The fountain was magical

Interesting video Dennis! I recently uploaded a video to my channel that my father filmed on 8mm during the 1963 May Day march in Newcastle Upon Tyne, it also contains some footage of marching jazz bands (Pewal Hussars and Ryhope Allstars). If your interested it is the one called Newcastle Upon Tyne 1963 - May Day March. Have subscribed.

I remember the view from Summerhill very clearly, as well as that across the Stargate football field towards the power station and the retired miners bungalows at Hollybush and Runhead, the bus stop at Runhead, Oh and the colliery houses at Stargate as well. I knew that area like the back of my hand.
