“It will happen again. Sure, it will have yet another name, and maybe a different excuse, and probably do it's damage in a different way. But make no mistake: The enemies of the freedom to connect have not disappeared.” Only 8 months later on January 11th 2013, Swartz committed "suicide".

Aaron was one of a kind. I can't believe it's been almost 10 years since his passing. It feels so strange growing old and realizing all the lives that could have been but are not here anymore- I feel that the world is missing so much potential but I guess that's just how it goes.

Today is April 2, 2021 and my first time to watch this particular video. About two years ago I saw the PBS movie about Aaron Swartz. That was the first time I heard of him. Even now most times I say anything about him I have to explain who he is. Mostly I spell his name so they can look him up.

4 years without you kid. If you only knew how internet freedom, Wikileaks mostly, has turned western world upside down, in ways we never expected... oh the irony. But I still believe. It's all very new for most of people, we need to learn, we need to learn about trolls, we need to learn about contrasting information, about getting information from opposite sources, not only select the sources we like, people of opposite backgrounds and views are getting aware of each others, and confronting their ideas directly, and it is a big crash at the beginning. But it's a beginning. How useful you would be around now :(

I think at the contrary and observe that people, young or older, educated with sharing art freely with serious level to elevate their knowledge if they don't have money to buy, are more sensibilized after, and then choose deleberately what they want to pay for..my son whose father is a musician, grew up using much free, as we couldn't afford with money the same way a serious amount of art exploration, which opened his mind a lot, and today buys many records, only what he wants to share at his turn..i think the change is here and not possible to come back, better to educate young people to be conscious of both sides, with values, and not just consummers behaviours, one could serve the other..art is meant for sharing too, and educate, if it is free at first, what's worth for them will be defended by them, by buying..unless too much quality demand is not required or reserved for those who have money, and not necessarily the passion..

Fuck copyright law. All it does is line the pockets of people who have enough money allready and interfere with file-sharing and KZbin uploads. A two-week old book or CD is OLD...if low-income people get something for free, that's fine.

+Troy Evitt I have to adamantly disagree with you on music copyright. You might think that musicians make huge sums of money, and some do, but what about people who are up and coming artists who are not signed by the big record labels? They don't make millions and millions of dollars. In fact, many of them are quite good artists who are struggling to make any money. If there were no copyrights for music, and it was allowed to be given freely to anyone, then they are indentured servants. It is called intellectual property, because they created it. They should be paid for their work. One song costs $1.25 a few years ago it was 99 cents. Less then the cost of a candy bar. This is the same for film, books, etc. If they weren't paid for their work, then they are indentured servants to the public. Nothing in life is free. In fact, life isn't fair! You might think everything should be free, well, we live in a capitalist society. That is another debate in itself. I think the Internet should always remain free, but you should have to pay for intellectual property period.
@rldwizz8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Finnell Copyright laws do not protect neither "big" nor "small" artists. "Small" artists thrive on piracy, because they get more coverage that way. Why make shitty laws that do nearly nothing to help, when we can just be kind and donate affordable sums to artists that make music we like?

You are just ignorant. Copyright laws protect me from large and small corporations from stealing my music and selling it as their own. By me having a copyright on my intellectual property, I have the upper hand. I may not be able to sue some small person whom I don't know about, but it does protect my intellectual property from being exploited from large institutions. This is an age old argument that it is okay to lie, cheat, and steal from large corporations because they have everything anyway. There are no situations where it is okay to lie, cheat, and steal. If I didn't own the copyright or get one on my intellectual property, then I am a slave to them and the world. Don't try to tell me about copyrights. I had songs stolen when I was younger when I was on Capitol/EMI records. Since I got wise, I copyright everything. Nothing in life is free, and this world doesn't owe you a thing. Life isn't fair! The sooner you realize this, the better off you will be. You only have to pay a dollar for a track. You ask any musician or starving artist if they want to give away their intellectual property for nothing in return or as you say donate money. I guarantee they will tell you no. Nobody is going to donate if they can get it for free. I like Aaron Schwartz a lot, and I thought he had great great ideas, but on the issue of copyright, I disagree. You will never be able to convince me otherwise, so don't even try.

I saw this in early 2013. It was ugly then and this young man gave his life, likely unwillingly, for it.
