How do you "send a camera back"? How do you get them refunded? Dude, a 12 minute video to say "bad autofocus".with a Fuji? Who doesn't know that? That is true with all their X-series cameras. Why are you complaining about auto-focus in the first place if you do "old school"? You can go totally old school with the XT-5. Just set it to manual mode. What am I missing here? Or you can get a Leica M3 for $800--$1200 and use cheap but decent Voitlander or Canon glass. and do film. I have had all these cameras and a Leica as well and have and use several medium format film cameras and a 35mm Nikon F2. Best SLR ever made. You can pick one uo for $250. anywhere if you want old school. Same with the XPro-3. I only use it in manual mode.. I love the question you ask though; do you really need this camera". I suffer from GAS so it takes great courage to get rid of one once you just get it. What camera did you use the most before this? I have learned one thing: when you buy a new camera you have to live with it and get to know it for 6 months to a year first. Just get an old mirrorless Canon 5D Mark IV for nothing. 30 meg. Or go film and get a Leica M3 But this video confused me. You say you like old school but complained about auto-focus which isn't old school..

I have a Sony NEX-5 and was using the TTattisan 25mm f/2 during a recent trip. I found either I was totally misunderstanding the concept of zone focusing or the markings on the lens were not quite accurate. I got better focus using f/8 and on camera settings using the focus peaking level set to red to guide me to better focus. Once set that way and leaving the focus alone after that the images were as you say- acceptably well. No going back and checking focus unless I had diddled the focus ring.

I see you have shot with the xpro 2 and xt3. I’ve owned both and there’s no difference in the way they operate than the xt5 operates. Plus you shoot a Sony. The most difficult menu I’ve ever used. If what you say is true you need to be shoot film. Digital is a computer and there designed to do the stuff for you. The closest I’ve come to making it simple is on my M leicas.
@JLStreetDoc6 ай бұрын
I don’t shoot film for many reasons. Yes, I agree, it’s the purest form of photography, but… Film cost too much, I don’t have a darkroom, and no space for one, and I need control of the editing. I shoot raw and full manual, so I don’t let the camera make any decisions and I use a manual lens. As far as the Sony goes, it serves a purpose that the Fuji can’t do. And the menu system is fine, way better than it used to be.

I just went on TrueDoF App which shows your depth of field ranges for a variety of situations.If you plug in 25 mm at 1.5 for apsc sensor size using f8 you get 15 feet to infinity in acceptably sharp focus.If you If you keep f8 but set your focus to 15 feet then everything from 8 feet to infinity is in acceptable focus. Set focus at 12 feet everything from 7 feet to 60 feet is in focus. You need f 11 to do 7 feet to infinity focusing at 14 feet. F 11 should still fall within capacity of apsc for no bad diffraction softening, usually, would be interesting to test that on this glass. I find the tendency to focus at infinity actually cuts down on potential closer distances unless you are really interested only in deep scenes with no closer interest elements. The app uses I believe a relatively standard setting for the circle of confusion, ie when softness overtakes sharpness which is of course subjective but I think this app uses a standard accepted calculation. Hope this info is helpful the app is really good😀
@michaellong952610 ай бұрын
Further re this particular lens best dof is very small amount of focus changes between the 3 m marking and infinity depending on how close you’d like to get in your acceptable range of focus. Like I said racking out to infinity will give you an overall decreased overall range vs focusing around 10-15 feet. But this lenses barrel markings are very compressed so quickest procedure may be rack out to infinity then back off just a touch, I use magnification and nail a focus distance of about 10 feet and shoot at that on the scale it’s about the 3 m marking so it does appear to be calibrated. If you like manual focus as a feature try voightlander lenses. Thanks for your efforts with the video😀

I shoot at f8. So anything 5ft to infinity. If I have something suddenly happen close to me then I just pull my focus all the way to the stop. I have another video about the accuracy of this lens and how to achieve it.
@apoorvj111 ай бұрын
Got my copy yesterday and I’m very impressed with the sharpness in areas where it is able to focus! Experimented a bit by keeping objects at .5m intervals from the camera and photographing at different apertures and zone ranges. I could only get reasonable sharpness for objects placed at distances corresponding to the second half of the zone. Eg. If the aperture is set to f8 and zone upper limit set to infinity, then the zone lower limit falls at ~.9m and the zone center at ~2m. I could only get sharp images of objects at 2m and beyond. Anything between .9m and 2m was totally blurry! I think this is what happened at 3:50 in the video. Jason mentioned earlier in the video that he shot all images at f8 and upper limit of the zone at infinity. The woman was slightly blurry but the trash can was in focus. Jason said he was 6ft (2m) away, right at the middle of the zone.
@apoorvj111 ай бұрын
The lens is still totally usable and I doubt I’ll be too close to people on the street either ways. But all the more reason why f11 would have been great on this lens. That could have provided a little wider DoF instead of going all the way to f16 and losing so much light. I might just order another copy to see if I get better focus and return one.
@JLStreetDoc11 ай бұрын
I would say that a majority of my subject are beyond the 2m mark. F8 has a range of 1.5m to infinity. (5 feet) I would say most are 8 feet from me. Plus there is the whole thing about acceptably sharp. Street photography is about emotion and capturing the rawness of life that moves in front of us. Tack sharp sterilizes the image. We don’t want all out blurry, but perfection isn’t always necessarily either.
