One of the reasons why the fabric on the Alabama Chanin website is pricier is that it is organic. Conventionally grown cotton is very damaging to the environment.

Hey, thank you for the insightful Video - I came across here because I (beginner level but did some easy sewing projects before with a machine that constantly worked against me) would have the opportunity to get my hands on a Janome 3050 for around 100$ (almost unused condition) and wanted to do some research before impulse bying :) Would you say it is still worth getting one for a beginner trying to get into slightly more advanced projects?

Dear Liza, She said in one of her interviews that for years they used repurposed tee shirts many of which she realized were made in the factories of Alabama before they closed and took production overseas. She bought them by the bales. So yes, you can definitely get the look with out the high priced cloth, for many years she did just that. Hope this helps. Enjoy your sewing. best wishes. Mrs. K

Hello I have a question or two , how come there is the same stitch but in orange on the actual machine and Can you serge? (As in a serging machine) Example letter H? (Hope all the mess made sense haha)
@LizaFlahertyArtist
@LizaFlahertyArtist 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Alex, 1. I am not sure what you mean by "same stitch but in orange". I'll hVe a look and get back to you. 2. Can you serge? In theory you can do a zig zag stich along an edge to finish it and stop it fraying which isbessentily what serging is. The server machine cuts and makes a sort of blanket stitch at the same time which seals the edge and insure it won't start to co.e apart. It gives a very finished look which isn't achievable with a sewing machine. In my opinion! I'll try and work out about the other part of your question. Thanks for commenting!
@alex_666_.
@alex_666_. 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn’t actually mean in orange hehe, I meant the stitch selection above the back stitch button on the side of the machine (10are in black and 10 in orange) Okay thank you to me it looked similar to a serging stitch (H) thank you
@LizaFlahertyArtist
@LizaFlahertyArtist 2 жыл бұрын
@@alex_666_. I don't have this model machine anymore so I can't give you a clear answer. However er, a zig zag stitch cabe lengthened and shortened. It does look like a stitch on a serger. I don't know if that helps at all?

Great review of her book. One thing I’ve wondered is after all the embroidery stitches are added, how much stretch is retained? And is it a struggle get on and off? There’s no mention of zippers. I also agree that the fabric is quite pricey. I’ll be looking at thrifting quality cotton knits to repurpose.
@LizaFlahertyArtist
@LizaFlahertyArtist 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. I can't rely comment on amount of stretch left except to say it sat nicely on the neckline of a jersey dress I stitched, it didnt pucker. The heavily embroidered skirts look like they weigh a ton with all the added bits on it. And yes, I didn't see any zippers in any of the patterns. I bet that would be a real piece of engineering to accomplish
@Knorrette
@Knorrette 2 жыл бұрын
As for the stretch, iI have made several garments and the stretch remains, even in the embroidered ones. It puts on as a regular stretch garment so no problem there. Yes, it does have some weight to it because there is always a double layer of fabric but actually, that feels nice. I didn't buy their fabric but went for a nice medium weight bio cotton jersey. I just finished a short jacket (Ezra pattern on the AC site) and used a 95% cotton/5% elasthane fabric for this one. That works just as well. I would not use viscose or viscose mixes though.

Hi was just about to purchase this machine and saw your video so thought I would have a peep at what you had to say!! I was shocked to see you threading the machine yourself! Its actually a small gizmo behind the needle that pulls down and sort of whips the thread through the eye of the needle. I didnt demo that feature in this video as I was note concentrating on the various stages of getting the thread from the spool down to the needle.
