Why doesn’t the deer run?? She’s just standing there? (Sorry I don’t understand why they do this, I know it basically means they think there in danger.)

She snorts to clear out the mucous from her nasal passages allowing her to get a cleaner sample of air in to analyze the type of danger. The sound is just a product of that which doubles as an alert to other deer. Both sexes snort for the same reason. And she stomps to try to get you to move so she can see that you are not an inanimate object.

I live in West Virginia, and I work with this old timer who is an ironworker and he said they were called whistle pigs and I thought it was bullshit but it’s true how cool

I just moved to the Eastern panhandle two and a half years ago and did not know that these groundhogs that are now living under my porch I thought were birds outside because one was whistling but then I realized that the mother was doing the high sharp whistle and then I googled it and found out that they were called whistle pigs and I didn't know that. I know I don't want them living under there, there are four groundhogs three babies one mother. I'm not sure how to get rid of them. I guess I just have to wait till they're not in the den and then block the entrance. The babies are getting kind of tame I came out in all three of them were sitting on the porch they looked up at me and then they ran under the deck.

I think it's their alarm. It lets other nearby deer know that there's potential danger around, but it can also tell predators "hey I know you're there, so don't even try to ambush me". Generally deer will run from threats unless they think they're cornered, so they might stamp and blow for a few seconds before they bolt.

I walked outside this morning to walk my dog and something huffed at me in the dark. I was pretty sure it was a doe but wasnt sure. Im like 100% sure now 😅 I have does and their babies living in my yard. My motion light hadn't kicked on yet but I ran back inside screaming like a little girl 😅

I believe deer blowing is they sense danger but are not sure of your location. The blow is sudden and loud and they want you to jump or move so they can spot you. Usually they have not caught your direct wind when blowing. Faint ground scent, perhaps. I have had a doe blow like this for 10 min but if they don't locate the danger, the whole herd continues to mill around but slightly on edge

It does seem to vary. I've had deer do this blowing behavior while looking at me right in the open in full daylight, so sometimes they'll apparently do it when they see you clearly but are still curious to gauge your behavior.

One summer my 4 year old daughter and I lived in a small fairly isolated cottage. I locked the doors at night. But it was HOT, so the windows were open. Around 2am I was sitting on my bed, reading. My bed was about 1 foot from a window - I was hoping to catch some breeze. Then a LOUD snorting started right outside my window. I was so caught off guard my reaction was to "assume the worst". ie I was terrified. I ran to my daughter. Locked all the windows in her room. Put her is a safe spot, then armed with tennis racquets I crept back towards the window. And finally spotted a friendly looking deer, who was still there, peering in, having a lovely great snort. So, that's me. frightened by a deer. My daughter still teases me.

I was strolling through the woods today and heard a few snorts and what sounded like stomps. Since the area was so densely wooded, I couldn't see what it was that was making the noise. I assumed it was a white tail deer, but having never actually heard one make this noise, I wasn't entirely sure. I also wasn't sure if it was a female or male, but in case it was the latter, I made sure to pick up my pace. Thanks to this video, I can confirm this is exactly what I heard, though I'm still curious: does the male make this same noise too?

Hi there! The answer to your question is Yes! They both do this. It is a kind of alarm that they know there is something there that doesn't feel right to them, or they are unsure about something. I love to hear that this video helped you confirm! Thanks for watching!
