It’s sad that he’s known for having schizophrenia because there’s no proof he had it. The onset of his condition happened much later in his life than when schizophrenia occurs. He lived a difficult life of financial struggle to provide for his family, and possibly another type of lifelong mental health issues, he very well could have cracked under years of pressure. That is not schizophrenia. It’s sad that’s what he’s known for because he put cat lovers & cats in mainstream society.

i find it fascinating that schizophrenia is quite simillar to psychedelics in it's visionary field, I'm not here to dumb down schizophrenia it is a really difficult illness to live with. i just find it intricate that these '' cat gods '' looks almost identical to what a dmt vision would look like.

Trauma and social exclusion can cause psychiatric symptoms that could be misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. So can hormonal and neurological illnesses. It's tragic when that happens. Have any of you seen the movie 'Brain on Fire' when Susannah Cahalan's encephalitis was misdiagnosed as possible schizophrenia, even when she was having seizures? Or the TED Talk by Eleanor Longden on how Hearing Voices led to a diagnosis of schizophrenia and mistreatment in a mental hospital. It was only when she found a supportive therapist that she was able to recover and become a research psychologist. You call schizophrenia a disease. But diseases have biomarkers, and if it were a disease, it would be diagnosed by a neurologist. This might be why too many people are misdiagnosed with this disorder. Another misconception is that it's long-term. Then why is it that some, perhaps even many, recover? Louis Wain was in deep emotional pain after the death of his beloved, his mother and sister, and Peter. He was also under a great deal of financial pressure, and easily misled. I don't believe it was schizophrenia. He might have had a psychotic breakdown, maybe even dementia in his later years. But schizophrenia seems to be what they call it when they have no other name to give it. The name unfortunately has a stigma and negative expectations. If people internalize the stigma, it could diminish their self-esteem. That's why many people who recover from 'schizophrenia' in our Western world do so in spite of psychiatry. They avoid the negative expectations that can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. They keep the label to themselves.

And this from Wikipedia: "In December 2012, psychiatrist David O’Flynn, at a gallery talk at an exhibition of "Kaleidoscopic Cats" at the Bethlem Royal Hospital Archives & Museum, proposed viewing the series as the creation of two men-"Louis Wain, who created them, and Walter Maclay (1902-1964), the psychiatrist who organised them into a series."[16] O'Flynn suggested Maclay saw in the series a proof of his own ideas, partly based on his 1930s experiments with art and mescaline-induced psychosis. Maclay concluded that the creative ability of people with schizophrenia deteriorated. O'Flynn says that, based on examination of the work of outsider artists, the link between schizophrenia and the deterioration of artwork doesn't hold true. Looking at Wain's late work, O'Flynn sees greater experimentation and use of colour, not a deterioration. Despite the series being known to be assembled, and the pictures not dated since the 1960s, "their representation of something that doesn't exist, namely psychotic deterioration, has been surprisingly robust". The series has become "the Mona Lisa of asylum art".[16]"

The claim that Louis Wain was schizophrenic has been disputed by many. I can't link to the article on KZbin, but here is an excerpt. "One thing that is often overlooked is the fact that Wain also continued to produce work in a more traditional style during this time too. The belief that his abstract drawings demonstrate the progressive deterioration of his mental state is quite likely a falsehood - the result of a claim made in a book called Psychotic Art that was published in the 1960s. All art should be considered as an expression of the artist, and Wain’s progression into psychedelia is just one aspect of his creative identity. Whether or not that aspect was triggered by mental illness is a moot point. What we do know is that Wain had a difficult life; and that he spent much of his time making some amazing, some curious and some fascinating illustrations." - Philip Kennedy, 'Cute Cats and Psychedelia: The Tragic Life of Louis Wain'

Cubism and abstraction are not signs of schizophrenia or "mental degradation", these ideas are outrageous and offensive! Please let go of the outdated/wrong schizophrenia hypothesis, the man who put it forward, Maclay, a doctor in Bedlam, was another exploiter in Louis' life, he gained prominence through this unfounded idea and his quasi-collection "kaleidoscope cats" which is not even in chronological order. See opinions of today's doctors who contest the Maclay's quasi-idea that Louis' wonderful abstract Cubist-like imagery (allegedly inspired by patterns from his mother's textiles) is product of "deteriorated mind" - if it was product of destroyed mind it would be worthless gibberish, not beautiful intricate highly-structured images they are! Image named "Blue cat" is a classic image created in 1932., after he left Bedlam and after he created abstract images bad-mouthed by Maclay. "Blue cat" is a most classic non-abstract image, it is not true that Louis was unable to create classic images later in life, I am absolutely sure he created them until the end, and there is evidence of him doing so. If only Maclay and likes of him were able to create 1% of joy and goodness Louis Wain created, maybe they wouldn't venture into art-criticism and proclaim abstract art as "degradation", please don't give public space to the ideas of people like Maclay.

People ! Let's not forget that we have absolutely no proof that he painted the 6(i think) weird cats in that specific order ! It's just the order the doctor put them in. And he also continued to paint his normal paintings like before after painting those !

The jagged patterns with bright colors looks exactly like some of my "vision" hallucinations. Rainbow zigzags forming images that constantly change, often depicting alien like creatures and tribal looking characters (like tiki masks and worshiped gods) I never tried psychadelics but I imagine this might be what its like to trip.

I am closer to 30 years old now, had schizophrenia since age 4 (childhood schizophrenia is very rare). 9 years later developed bipolar from trauma. Thus turning the diagnosis into schizoaffective disorder. I tried more than 20 meds in different doses and combos and been abused by many doctors. It became apparent I am treatment resistant. I never had any real education or support with my illness so I am so grateful I have kept it together as well as I have. Some days I'm fine, other days (for weeks or months) I am definately not ok. It has started taking a toll on my heart but as long as I'm alive, I will keep going and take the best care of myself as I can. Art is medicine for the mentally ill and since turning 20, the depressive symptoms seem to have blocked my creative flow. I have rare spurts when manic but overall, I feel like part of me is missing. Without art, I dont feel like myself. I will get that back soon! I live to create and I have been trapped for long enough. Anyone reading, thank you and if you also struggle, as long as you live, there is hope for change. You got this!

It is actually theorized that Louis Wain was actually on the Autism spectrum, as back then Autism didn't exist yet as a diagnosis, and early descriptions of Autism referred to it as a type of schizophrenia (it is not anymore, but around Louis's life it would have been had he known) and actually even to this day a lot of adults are misdiagnosed as Schizophrenic when actually they are Autistic. Louis Wain had a very heavy focus on cats throughout all of his art carrier and its actually very common for Autistic artists to have a very narrow focal point in their art. Louis's art never declined in fact his attention to detail was immaculate. I disagree with the notion that he ever had a mental decline, he only honed in on his skill and became one of the greatest cat artists who ever lived

It's fascinating to see how drastically Louis Wain's art changed once his mental illness started to dominate his life. If anything his artistic ability grew by leaps and bounds. Such creativity! It's as if his mind was unshackled from societal conventions of conformity and he explored themes that had a universal appeal. It just goes to show that psychedelic art didn't originate in Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s. Psychedelic expression has been around since the dawn of humanity. It's always portrayed by those wonderful individuals whose minds are wired just a wee bit differently than conventional minds. By seeing too much they help all of us to see better.

My step cousin has the same mental illness like him and Van Gogh . I was born with a condition called microcephaly similar to aurtisum and a lot of stupid ignorant fools say microcephaly is a illness but it’s not . Sence I was a toddler I’ve been painting sence around the 90s- early 2000s up to 2022 . I’ve used my art for happy, sad, angry , whats Beautiful, what’s true about the people that’s evil towards woman or to people that are born dissabled, or people that’s not white ,I paint what bullies say to innocent people online like social Media and ya they say evil things about me and my art on my KZbin art channel . I used art on what’s true about the world like global warming and how evil humans treat animals and how I lost some one I love like a family member, friend ,and a pet . My step cousin that sufferd mental like Louis Wain and Van Gogh , killed him self because he was calling for help and his parents did not do anything about it and my friend did the same . I’ve painting something after my cousins death . This is so sad that no body is not appreciating My art , Van Gogh ,and Louis Wain and understand us . It’s sad that stupid people that’s strangers think I need to go to college to be a artist but on social media they don’t want to understand why I don’t go to collage .You don’t need college . They live to criticize us on how we do art in a ignorant jealousy mean way think it’s ok or think it’s ok to say that to some one dissabled . They do that to the girl that painted big eyes from back in those days as well. They love to say your art is horrible too.I report people like that all the time on my channel and I get hurt and angry .There is no rule in art . You do your own way of art because it’s perfect the way it looks is. Still trying to be known . I wish people just understood us and appreciate us artist.

it is actually highly debated weather or not he suffered from Schizophrenia it is known however that he did suffer from some sort of clinical depression and anxiety. and Schizophrenia didn't seem to have affected his art style permanently either (if he even had it) as one of his last artworks was actually quite similar to his original art style, a cat with a cute little smile, and below it, the text "I am happy, because everyone loves me" which goes against the idea that he suffered from Schizophrenia, as a thing we have to consider when talking about it, is that Schizophrenia is actually a mixture between Psychosis and Schizoid disorder a Schizoid person normally seems a lot like a person with clinical depression, being highly unmotivated and normally unhappy or simply unable to feel certain emotions. that's why it is Schizophrenia, it's a disorder that causes one thing, and another at the same time, though one doesn't counter the other. Louis Wain probably didn't have Schizophrenia actually, so much so that even if this is one of the most accepted theories, it still is highly debated weather it is true or not. with that being said, I like to imagine that he actually just let his imagination flow more while under treatment, causing his art to become this "clusterfuck" of color, flower shapes, and of course, cats

He reminds me a lot of William uttermohlen, William is also an artist but once he got dementia, he started painting himself as the disease got worse, as the disease progress the self-portrait gets more and more unrecognizable, it's horrifying
