Seven years have passed since you shared this video. Do you still have all ten fingers? Seeing you push that board without a push stick tells me you might not!

Would love to know the actual wood that was in the cutting board. The protectant affects the color of the wood. TY

I learned how to do this project years ago at a class but have been missing one step. This video showed me what I needed to know and I am forever grateful. Just wanted to let you know the link to the cut list or plans is no longer working.

Caddywpus, Did you put any finish on top of your stained wood. I always use some type of polyurethane and then 4 to 5 coats of paste wax on top of that. I’m notorious for getting glue spills and everything else on my workbenches and it just helps in the cleanup process .

I'm not convinced this is shellac though, woodcraft makes no claim to it being shellac or food safe - also any dyes added to the stick are also not food safe. Shellac also softens in water, dissolves in alcohol, and chips easily when cut on so it seems to me it's not the best solution to our problem.

Have you tried tung oil after the shellac seal coat?

Nice technique, but not very useful for most people. You need a high end table saw to make cuts precise enough for this to work. And if you can afford a multi-thousand dollar cabinet saw, why not just buy the proper triple chip saw blade that's designed specifically to cut melamine in a single pass?

Why not use a NEW blade with both tools? That metal blade was destroyed by the first run.

Thank You! I was searching for ideas on how to add vibrant colors to match my color theme of burnt orange, yellow and sage green for a bunch of cutting boards a friend made me from my left over butcher block counters, and your video was great, also Thank you for the wax tips, I have oiled my counters 3 times now and still feeling they need something more and I am sure the wax will be the missing link. I am going to try to make my own plant based colored water.

Just to let people know, that if you work with a lot of Melamine like I do, it pays to buy a blade for cutting Melamine. I use a Forrest Duraline blade. It is expensive, but doesn't require a scoring pass. Just set your blade height, a make your cut. As long as your table saw is true, you won't get any tear out.
