As a poet, and a successful one who has won contests and made money. Poetry is none of those things. Poetry is just the pleasant flow of words, There is a poetic verse that says, all art forms aspire to the transcendence of music. If there is something eternal it’s music. And below that is storytelling. Our oldest most deep traditions are songs and stories. There are simply no modern poets that are on the level of Beethoven, there are no modern poets on the level of George RR Martin. Most people cannot even name a poet that is not wither a storyteller or a song writer. Poetry as a pure art is complete pretentious aggrandized speech. The transcendence of poetry is not the words but the deep soul of the artists. Poets are transcendent poetry is as low brow as graffiti. Like graffiti it is a game of art, it is self aggrandizing of one’s prowess as a user of words and phrase. Novelists don’t write to impress upon others their own greatness like poets do. Just like a portrait painter does not paint to impress upon others their own greatness as poets do. If someone writes a story they elevate the characters and plot, if someone shoots a photo they elevate the subject, if someone makes a game they elevate the experience of the player. Poetry is the only artform where what is elevated is one’s own ability to compose. When people praise Shakespeare they praise his ability, not the impact of his words on society but the impact of his skill on words. When someone builds a statue of a Buddha it is for devotions to the Buddha, when someone builds a sword it is to strengthen the weirder. When someone rights a poem it is to express there ability to cease upon the most brilliantly phrase and delivery. It is the art of sounding brilliant. It is the most self serving artform because the poet is the center of poetry. It’s again why all poetry that travels through time always tells a story, express a religion, or describes a history. Regular poetry happens in coffee shops and bookstores and is forgotten as soon as the applause stop. There is no market for poetry being people that love it are themselves poets. It is the least significant artform for humanity . I love poetry but the performance or composition of poetry is an act of attention seeking on par with stage acting in a play. As soon as the performance is over it is the story that is retained and the actors impression nobody retains the actual performance. Likewise people listen to poetry but they don’t retain it unless it is mixed in with politics or philosophy or religion or history. Poetry as the play of beautiful words is like a fluttering butterfly, it has no greater impact on the world than a moments beauty. Here you go I wrote a poem about how ineffectual poetry is. It may make you smile or feel something but it won’t change you like learning history or reading a great story or seeing a great movie. Sadly as someone who probably loves poetry more than almost anyone I know I could never make a living in poetry. Perhaps saying that makes me want to dare to try. Maybe I can in this digital age. Know I love poetry the way that the ocean loves the moon. I am not saying poetry is absent of spirit I am saying it is a pure abundance of spirit made to demonstrate an abundance of spirit and I am saying an abundance of spirit is not something the world cultivates. Only poets cultivate it and the most they can extract for the labor is smiles and applause. What you can trade for a thing is literally the truth of the power and value of a thing. Capitalism is a brutal truth.
