Only a small number of episodes have survived. Given that VT recording was so expensive back then, the rest were wiped after transmission.

OMG I met your dad, Michael / Chris O'Neill, with Benji when I was about 4 at a country fair down the country. He was lovely. Picked me up a gave me a kiss and a hug. Always remember his kindness. Probably was 1971/72.

Why doesn't RTE rerun The Riordans? Why isn't there a The Complete Riordans DVD set?

I'm pretty sure most of the early years are long lost. It was mainly shot straight to video tape - and in the 1960s it was common for TV channels to over record video. After all, that was supposed to be its main economic advantage over film - it could be reused.

I've read that the Riordans was one of the first TV series ever filmed using mainly outdoor sets and cameras. Also, movie tape was expensive, so, being RTE, the producers used the same tapes and taped over older episodes to record new ones. That's given as the main reason why there's little or no footage still around today.

+pat mustard I was managing American TV station in 1965 and I do not believe the tape story. As an Irish Catholic American, who has been home{Ireland}countless times...I want to buy the entire series for myself, then gift it back to the Irish people.

It is almost definitely the truth. That is exactly what RTE used to do. Even the much better off BBC in the UK reused video tape over and over. The BBC have often been criticised for wiping original episodes of programmes like "Dr Who" and "Dad's Army".

Why has The Riordans never been rebroadcast and released on DVD? Surely there would be a massive audience for it all over again? I've just finished reading Wesley Burrowes 1977 book about the series and it's fascinating

a sad story,I remember as a young man standing out side the oval bar and looking at the best photo,of jack doyle i had ever seen,i often wonder where it went to.Many years later i worked with jack doyle ,in the international hotel in bray,a flower in his lapel,a hankey from his breast pocket, and he still could look well.I found him very interesting to talk to.R.I.P. regards, Tony Sadar.

Jesus I haven't heard that tune since the early 70s when I went to me grannies for my half twelve school break from Jamess St CBS. She'd sit in the corner with her cuppa saying shush and blessing herself if she heard "dirty words" like breast, or kissed me or mini skirt. They were great and happy Rare Oul Times
