I couldn't agree more with the setup. We raised hogs for the freezer. We shared them with my grandparents every year. They are stronger than you expect. They definitely need a strong enclosure with hog panels

Why they get bloated? It happens a lot with cattle. They don't get enough water, wrong feed, too much of bad grass?

Do you feed your pigs hay in the winter or is that just for bedding. Are you pigs just fed a feed ration?
@jeffecampbell19 күн бұрын
It's not a myth. Customers have no problem paying a premium for pigs raised in an alternative to a confinement raised highly medicated pig. You can't expect a premium price when you aren't using premium inputs and grazing methods. So many people make profits like that the USDA tracks it monthly. It's called the pastured pig report.

Very interesting to understand how you work with the soil where the pigs live. I was thinking of using carbon in some form, eather wood in some form and the carbon and pig manure will bound but its still the part with low PH that needs to be solved with lime as you informed us. Thx!

No electric fence what keeps them from jumping up mine would get out of that in a heart beat unless it’s cattle pannel buried 2 ft deep

I don't see it....I'm 63,life farmer, livestock, 10 brood sows,2 boars, 100 capacity top hog finish floor. 1/10 acer is a myth unless inhumane

5 sows, 1 boar... Spring and fall litters??? If you average 10 piglets, you make your 100...
@wingedcoot985312 күн бұрын
Inhumane? Is that your opinion or based on some acceptable standard? Real question don’t get mad. I’m in NC and have seen how SmithField runs their barns. They would put way more hogs in enclosures way smaller. Yet, they still operate.

I think it looks good, well thought through. Since pigs like to experience things, i would like for them to have new branches each day or anything where they can play and figure things out. Thx

Excellent work. The cow experienced almost no stress, and this is very important. But you also need to be sure that the end of the hose has smooth rounded edges to make it easier to pass through the esophagus and not to injure it.

Your numbers look pretty similar to what i'm estimating as i start out my operation. A little context for the unrealistic numbers coming from other youtubers though. The $1k per pig guy is charging a crazy price per pound for pork, and because of a few factors, people are happy to pay it. Most of us don't have the customers for that. As for the video where the other guy mentions the 60k number, i think he mentioned raising 300 pigs, and grossing nearly 200k before factoring in expenses. So his profit margin is totally within reason there, but the scale is way more than most folks can manage, and the input costs would bankrupt a lot of us before the pigs ever went to market. I think what you present here is a lot more honest about the realities of farming.

Hey Robert I love your set-up and it’s very convenient for loading and unloading your pigs! I was wondering how many pigs per pen? Like how many boars in one pen and how many sow pigs per pen even with the piglets and how many sows per mating pens? Thanks 🙏 for your hard work for your setup! Hope you have a blessed day!

What is the point of the mineral oil? Would vegetable oil work instead as well?

Mineral oil is a natural laxative, and helps to relieve any pressure that may persist after treatment.

@steveo_o6707Ай бұрын
I use the cut blue barrels as well. I use garden timber stakes to the ground, drill holes for drainage then I screw in the barrel to the timber. I have two large pigs eating out of it and they haven’t moved it once

What do you do if there is a gate in the middle of your set up?

Gotta incorporate some insulated handles, either bought or homemade so you can disconnect and reconnect when using the gate
