I’m mastering this entire era of sets, and you did such an incredible job of giving the background on a fairly unknown era of the TCG! Thank you so much for all the work you put into this video! It really puts it all into perspective and has inspired me to create a video of my own!

Speed Deoxys wasn't available until Emerald Version came out so that's probably why they postponed it.

This was a wonderful video to watch. I remember gazing at these cards when I was subscribed to Beckett. As you mentioned in your video, Yugioh was taking my time, so I didn't bother trying to collect Pokemon cards from this era, unfortunately.

Plenty of inacuracies regarding the transition from gen 2 to gen 3. Just like what happened with Pokemon GO hype and mania from the casuals doesn't last. Many kids that got into pokemon in the first 2 gens did so because it was the hot trendy thing and were never going to last forever. And yes many moves onto yugioh for a brief period when it was looking to be the next hot thing. The same applies for the tcg too. Sure gen 3 games didn't let you transfer pokemon from gen 2 but they were superior in almost every other regard with numerous features nonexistent in gen 2. What you said about the poke gear is also misleading. Trainers in gen 2 battle you every now then and are not that many. In Ruby and Sapphire you always have a lot more trainers to rebattle all the time whether you can call them on the phone or not. It isn't fair to paint a picture as if this happened because Ruby and Sapphire were bad games.

I def remember this period being when Pokémon wasn’t considered kool anymore. On the playground Yugioh was “IN” and Pokémon was “played out”. It wasn’t until diamond and pearl came out that I saw my classmates (now in high school at the the time) on a Pokémon craze again. And then of course Pokémon go years later had everybody acting like it was 1999 again.
@Pichuscute12 күн бұрын
Just gonna say, the post-Unseen Forces sets are what I consider to be the death of the TCG (until much more recently), so it's interesting to hear that the era previous to that is the one people generally consider darkest. I guess I didn't collect a ton at the time (dropped off TCG during Gen 2), so maybe it's just hindsight, but still. The E-Reader cards are just cool as hell, imo.
@ProfessorMetri12 күн бұрын
I should have been more clear with statistics in the video but When I say “darkest” it doesn’t mean people disliked the TCG, in fact it was probably the most competitive well liked competitive scene ever and people who were collecting loved it. What makes it the “darkest” was that Pokémon, the company, was on a steep decline. Red and blue sold ~31 million copies, gold and silver sold ~24 million and Ruby sapphire sold ~16 million.

While the editing and presentation are top quality, the actual information presented is surface level at best. You claim this era to be the "dark ages" of Pokemon, but never present a way to measure this claim. I would have loved to see sale records for the games or tournament attendances for the tcg. Additionally, your analysis of the tcg sets themselves rarely ever dive beyond an examination of the different holos in this era. "Set Identity" is never defined beyond cards sharing a setting in their art. If a set doesn't share a setting within it's artwork, why not look at mechanical identity? Are their card cycles? How have main attackers evoled during this era? Or what cool support pokemon were released? etc. This a pokemon collector's opinion on holo cards at best, with very little substance about the card game itself.
@ProfessorMetri14 күн бұрын
I appreciate the compliment on the editing. I agree I should have included more records/statistics when it came to history aspect. And I also agree the analysis was still very shallow. I will say for starters, it’s honestly pretty hard to put a video like this together it takes a long time even for basic research and editing takes even longer. If you look at my channel I only have 2 videos of this type and it’s the route I want to take for the future so it’s still early in my career for this. Furthermore, mechanics and actual tcg knowledge is something I am extremely ignorant on and I acknowledge that. While I do need to learn more and incorporate it, In the meantime, I’d highly recommend Ruby Retro for that type of Content. I appreciate the feedback and comment. Thanks!
@ryanjanasz100114 күн бұрын
@@ProfessorMetri Welcome for the feedback. I feel as though my original comment came off as harsh, and I apologize if that was the case. Your charisma and video quality is really good! For some ways to research TCG mechanics and meta, you could always interview various players. I know Tricky Gym played a lot of this era and features some retro showcases of these sets. Additionally, you could view how some MTG players provide retrospectives on past sets. My favorite is the Resleevables podcast. They examine a set through specific criteria through card lore, mechanics, cycles of cards and other categories. Granted, the podcast format is a lot longer in length, but the way the Resleevables structure their set reviews could be a useful thing to take inspiration from. I think the Pokemon TCG community needs more informative retrospectives, and I honestly do look forward to how your analytical content evolves. Hope this helps!

Those years is where I played the TCG the most by far. I played competively as well as I could as a high schooler with little money. By far the best years to play the tcg. My favorite decks I used back then were my dark dragtrode deck and team magma deck. I still have all the pieces to remake my team magma deck too.The TCG went to crap when gen 4 started and I couldn't get into it anymore. It just wasn't the same anymore and the power creep started to get gross to me with those Pokemon prime at ex level of power but no drawbacks.

I’ve had a lot of people tell me this was one of the best times ever competitively for Pokémon which is so cool to see. While Pokémon was struggling financially, the people who were still in it were having the time of their lives.

A lot of the references really did come from Bulbapedia, the website has ALOT more information than people realize. I wouldn’t go father than recommending people to Bulbapedia. I sort of agree with this. There have been hundreds of Japanese promos that never made it to English but at the same time, Team Magma Team Aqua was 100% the wrong set to put it in. They stuck out like a sore thumb and I think it would have fit better in any other sey

I just have to disagree with the game part. Ruby and Sapphire almost immediately became the best selling GBA games and boosted sales of the console. In the end, they sold 16 million units.
@redheadmedia790121 күн бұрын
That doesn't mean the games sold as well though. Selling well doesn't equal growth. Ruby & Sapphire sold almost 10 Million less copies than Gold & Silver. Yeah, it was still a success, but interest was starting to dip. Emerald did a lot to help though, selling one million more copies than Crystal did

Interestingly enough a lot of competitive Pokemon tcg players look back on this era (specifically the 2006 era) as one of the best in the history of the tcg, as the standard card pool facilitated a lot of smart back and forth gameplay and decks could easily make comebacks if they were far behind
