The reason I left Portland 40 years ago was because I was homesick for Salt Lake City, the town I grew up in. I had become so acclimated to Portland's mild temperate climate, that the first winter back home just about killed me! Since then, I can tell you one thing, you can leave Portland, but she'll never leave you. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about Multnomah Falls, Cannon Beach, the Columbia River, and permanently snow capped Mt Hood.

5-years ago i moved out of portland and into milwaukee, portland problems are starting to move into milwaukee now. why i moved: homeless, you have to navigate around tents to walk down a sidewalk. drugs, they do it out in the open, be careful of syringes on the ground. if you buy anything and do not pay with cash, use your card, there is a fee. and a yearly fee for everyone in your home. and then there is crime . . . . . .

@@Salmonskinbandaid if you’re talking about a downtown skyline-not really. I’d say the cascade mountains and trees more than anything dominate most of the areas skyline. None of the buildings are really that tall-Vancouver is mostly flat and you can’t see downtown from most of it.

I've also lived on both sides of the Columbia, and it's hard for me to differentiate between the 2 cities. Even if you move out to the Couve, you're still in the Portland metro, and you'll never forget that half the population of Oregon lives within minutes, not hours from you. Vancouver, USA may be the 4th largest city in Washington, but it's still very much a (forgive me) suburb of Portland.

@@LivinginOregonandWashington both places struggle with bad PR to some extent. I miss California in some respects but the life that I have here would be unaffordable there. The economy here isn’t as strong so you see a lot more people struggling and because it’s a more rural community there aren’t as many healthcare options. I miss Stanford and Kaiser Perm California. But Portland is affordable, it is safe, it’s largely clean, the people are friendly once you break the ice and say what you will the city is brimming with charm there are just street after street of craftsmen style homes from the teens and 1920’s. Politically it’s too far left for me (I’m a moderate) but you can find like minded people. So overall living here was a great choice financially and I’m closer to family. It has been hard to the extent that for me it weirdly feels like the pandemic hasn’t ended because this was my solution to that time and I work from home. So working on solution around that lol

@LivinginOregonandWashington

@@victorkral5758 I know a lot of local storefront business owners in different neighborhoods of Portland. Graffiti is being cracked down on, they have community involvement teams that will help local businesses have the graffiti removed or hire a professional artist to make a beautiful mural over it. Downtown sector itself on the commercial end will continue to see vacancy, but a lot of the neighborhoods and suburbs still see low commercial vacancy. The streets could still use a lot more cleaning up, Portland needs to decide if we want to be a green city or not. Hopefully we can make it better! 🌲

I suggest doing at least a half day in the Columbia River Gorge, that would be a stark contrast! For city parks, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden (Rhoddies will have just have gone, but still beautiful), leech Botanical gardens, Mt tabor park, Westmoreland City park on the east side. On west side Japanese gardens, forest park, Portland Rose gardens (do this one during sunset!) A trip to Timberline lodge, or down to Cannon Beach to switch things up is always nice.

I lived in Portland for many years and always thought it was a beautiful city. But no more..now it just looks like a slum….graffiti EVERYWHERE you look. And whether you think it’s art or garbage, it’s wrong! It’s destruction of someone else’s property, but no one knows right from wrong anymore. And no one obviously cares about the hideous graffiti.
