Are you using a clouser minnow? If you tie flies, how about showing how you tie yours or at least share a view of the type. You catch bass very well on the fly rod.

Hey man, been watching your channel for a while and I think you mentioned you use an 11wt. So I just got a 9wt and i find it very difficult casting in general coming from my 6wt. Now I can see what you do with that 11wt is pretty impressive. Any tips on how do handle a heavy rod?
@greggibby3062
@greggibby3062 2 ай бұрын
Lot of different factors to consider - is it a fast action or medium action, carbon fiber or fiberglass, etc.. But - even with all that, I've found that doing a double haul and letting the rod do most of the work is the best way to get more distance and to save your arm and shoulder. there is a really good tutorial here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/embXepWBa92WoKs

Hi Jonathan. Some added advice which might speed your learning curve and minimize future frustration/mistakes. First some background- I am not a professional though I have been flyfishing longer than the majority of guides I've met. In my youth, I started flyfishing for panfish/bass/pike/carp and other freshwater species. However, at this point I have almost exclusively (not counting flyfishing trips for bass or when I journeyed elsewhere) flyfished the entire Tx gulf coast from Galveston to SPI for over 30 years. As already noted by the content creator the DOUBLE HAUL is vital for any fly fisher. It's even more critical to saltwater flyfishing than freshwater. I recently discovered another channel which I've been enjoying where almost all of flyfishing content is done on small central Tx streams. From the video perspective of the content creator, I immediately noticed this gentleman's casting stroke lacked the use of both the single and double haul. This is why he required an excessive number of false casts in order to reach his target- even when using small flies. As it happens, later in the series of his videos I saw where this person fished the gulf coast with a friend targeting redfish from a guides flats skiff. I KNEW he would struggle mightily even before he took his first shot because of his casting stroke. What I am about to share with you, is not intended to come across as bragging so bear with me. When I first decided to learn how saltwater flats/surf flyfish I was told by a boat salesman I met at a boat show in Houston who had just gotten into saltwater flyfishing that I would need a 9 or 10 weight- so this is what I purchased. This was completely erroneous information. I did catch fish, however it's akin to using a bazooka to hunt rabbit and squirrel. Shortly thereafter, I went to the ONLY fly shop in Houston at the time (long out of business) where I met Capt. Chris Phillips- may he rest in peace. Chris was transplanted Floridian working part time at the store and once (perhaps still does) held one of the tarpon flyfishing records in Florida. He was an outstanding guide who brought his Florida style flats skiff to Houston and would roam the gulf chasing tarpon, tuna etc. whenever he was not inshore fishing. It was he who informed me I would not need anything above a 6wt to handle any inshore fish. And that was that. Now, the ONLY reason I will pick up a 9 or 10 weight is when I am chasing pelagic brutes like Jack Crevalle. If you learn the correct casting stroke utilizing a double haul, you'll be able to use your 6wt all the time. My go to rod for 3 decades has been a 6 wt. When it's dead calm as it was in this particular video, you can easily use a 5wt unless you are using a big wind resistant fly. Back in the 90's I would fish the big open flats of the Laguna Madre-there is zero wind protection there- with Capt. Scott Sparrow (I believe he's now retired) all day long with a 5 TFO wt unless the wind was simply howling. Now, the only time I break out an 8wt for inshore flyfishing is when I am casting large-weighted flies standing on the bow of a casting platform needing to punch into a stout wind or when chasing Bahamian bonefish. Here in Tx, an 8 wt will handle any big inshore fish - including the baby/juvenile tarpon you can find in deep S. Tx and trust me, tarpon can PULL. If you can find it, see if you can locate an excellent though now ancient instructional video by Chico Fernandez. Chico is amongst an elite group of legendary S Florida saltwater flyfishing experts- and S. Florida is where all of this was born. The video is back from the VHS tape era, but it might be available in modern format. It was filmed against a black ground and also used slow motion so you can easily see what is happening with the fly line. If you can practice a bit, and apply the information from that video you will have no problem transitioning to the saltwater game. If you aren't yet using the double haul, you will also reap an instant benefit in freshwater environments when throwing big deer hair surface flies for bass or big poppers for stripers. Best of luck in your future flyfishing journey's.

How do setup your anchor? I have a float tube, considering adding 1
@greggibby3062
@greggibby3062 4 ай бұрын
Pretty simple - just tie the anchor rope to the bottom of the anchor, use a break away zip-tie to hold it to the top. You need to do that incase it get stuck on something - otherwise you will be donating an anchor at some point 🙂. Then add a float to the line. I would recommend a 1lbs anchor for a float tube - lots of options for individual pieces or a full set-up on Amazon.

And nice catches by the way that whole area has a honey hole full of monster trout. And when the dolphins come in they drive the trout into under the pier and around that pier cause there is old pilons and structure from the old piers that was there before for them to hide in and they will bite lures that swim by as a defense bite cause they don't want the dolphins to see the lure or fish by them and attract them to their hiding spot I guess that's what I like to think as to why they bite like crazzy when hiding in their from dolphins

O use to live in Portland texas outskirts of corpus Christi the city and the beaches in corpus aranasas and rock port and all over south texas are nasty and hard packed sand and not white conpared to the squeaky clean fluffy thick white sandy beaches we have over here in gulf shores Alabama and oragne beach fl for some reason. But one thing is for sure that Indian point pier in Portland if you throw some soft plastics on a 3/8 jig hook woth a bass style rod anf spinning reel and when facing the pier go to the far left hand side corner facing back twords the beach and highway and boince and reel that jih head amd soft plastic eel type bait pff the bottom in a fast jerk and medium reel pace to reel in the cslack you will catch monster speckled trout there. I caught my all time personall best trout there which was was 29.6 inches at 12.7 lbs she was a monster and i always caught my limit of 5 trout over 15 inches at the spot in a hour or two everry time in early morning as soon as the sun starts to peak through the darkness is when you wanna start fishing and fish till about noon os the nest times there for trout. Especially right now in sorong time they are so thick in there they will hit the plastic soft eel bait as soon as it hits the water and if you free line a live shrimp right there by the dock and jaut let the shrinp donots thing about 10-15 feet away from doc you will nail monster trophy trout roght there as well like that if the spft plastic osnt working

@@greggibby3062 your welcome even free lining live shrimp right next to the pier by the posts I have caught trophy sized trout and actually caught my personal best that way using live shrimp free line she was 29 7/8 of a inch long 15.6 lbs fat girl not pregnant just big belly and I had a replica made of her. I took like 15 different measurements and it took a while to do so cause I did it with her in the water the whole time while a buddy was pushing water across her gills to keep oxygen flowing so she wouldn't die and go make more monsters for us to catch in the future years. I also have caught a few tagged red fish from corpus Christi that the Texas A&M fish and wildlife program does with the truck and the free boat and cash prize if you catch a redfish with their lottery tag on it well since I caught it in mobile Alabama I would t have been able to bring it in to them within the 24 hours of catching and calling it in and second of all apparently if it's caught in another state that tag doesn't count which sucks cause I could have won me a new truck boat and 100k cash. They do that cause you gotta pay money to be a member in case you catch the taged fish they release like thousands of them with tags and only a few are money tags rest are just to call and report so they can track them and do studies. Also the limit law that Texas has on all the game saltwater fish is so strict it actually helped the fishing get amazing in a 10 -15 year period which is very fast and reason why you can catch trophy trout off of any bank and under any bridge off any pier ECT in corpus and surrounding areas. Also that over pass bridge by the kayak park they call black bridge free line shrimp right there almost under the bridge but casting paralell to it off the rocks/bank or use the same lure or type of lure I'm talking about as long as it has a chartrose tail ajd 3/8 jig head and make sure its not very windy I have caught monsters there as well monster trout, red fish and alot of hige flppr mat flpunder casting in a si cricle.pattern looking for flpunder i have limit out on all three species in matter of a three-fpir hour period a bunch of early to late spring mornings and evenings before dark fishing there. Only place I have ever fished to limit out on all three species with same lure and live shrimp as bait free lining. And I have been saltwater fishing since I was 5 years old with lures for trout and redfish and flounder like this. That is a amazing spot and not many ppl catch fish there cause they are bottom fishing and the fish you wanna catch won't eat dead nasty chunks of cut bait and deal squid the red fish flounder and trout want love bait they can ambush and or trout can chase and hunt down to eat or attack as a self defense type deal if they are spawning in there cause that is a hot spot for spawning females across the other side and all around that over pass and if yoy.go there fish on the opposite side of the highway of the kayak park i have caifht monsters on the other side and saw a 31.5 inch female get caught on the right side of the bridge/over pass but its harder and only go to thst sife of they not biting on the first side o said go to. And if your coming from ingleside and Portland it will be the left side of the highway and bridge and the first end not the far end of the over pass as well
