I typically make 7ft scarves so my rows are around 300-320 rows. You definitely do not have to make a long scarf, i just prefer it

I don't have an exact amount but I usually set aside at least one full skein of each color. I typically use big twist from joann or red heart super saver. The knitting machine eats up a lot of yarn

Do you have to use the scrap yarn? Couldn’t you have just started with the regular yarn?

the scrap yarn helps you look for the stitches you need to sew together. I tried without it and I ended up unraveling a portion of my scarf. I don't know how to knit so it was devastating lol
