He's playing Sm3das so its probably joy-cons or the pro controller having an off center analog stick. Regardless its not really Mario 64's fault he just didn't look into version differences, control sticks, etc. In this situation i think him and Nintendo are both to blame, Nintendo for not releasing a good version of the game and him for not looking into it.

@@camgreeny2759 I played this on the switch n64 controller which (according to a video) has the same or extremely similar dead zones to an original n64 controller

and for the record, when I did my initial playthrough I did do some research on why the controls were like this and I didn't find anything (didn't spend hours on it but I didn't just Google it and read the first result either)
