I am turning 64 soon and have bought a cheap electronic kit. I had a kit when I was 14 but never learned to play it. Now I am trying for real late in life LOL. And this is a challenge! However, it is also one of the most common guitar strum patterns for a lot of music. I play guitar so I can hear the rhythm fairly easy. But man playing it on drums is a challenge! But I am going to get it if it takes me till I am 70!!!! Thanks for your great teaching style!

Thank You So Much Mike! This has helped me unlock new techniques and i improved a lot using the bassdrum. Your always so proactive and happy when you are teaching. Thanks! 😀

Is two crashes compulsory for this song?
@MikeBarnesDrumsКүн бұрын
Not compulsory, but I think it's really nice to have that variety in tone. Remember you can always use the edge of your ride cymbal as a crash too.

Hi, I've been wondering how long one should dedicate to pass a grade and how long is a good amount of time, about 2 years ago I was just finishing grade 3 and I am now about 40% through grade 8 is this good progress?
Im currently in grade 6 and this is the most boring one im studying but i could get tricky when you dont focus because you feel like you automatically know it.

Excellent video Mike. Is the hi hat played on the accented notes when your playing the sextuplet?
@MikeBarnesDrums2 күн бұрын
No, in this exercise the accent is played along with the bass drum on the beat (on the numbers). The hi-hat is played on the “+”, which is the fourth note of the sextuplet each time. Notation and slow down-able practice-along version linked on channel members’ page as always. Cheers!

I love your videos, thank you very much for teaching us how to play drums. How difficult is this song? What would you say is the most difficult part (Is it the guitar solo, the 16th notes on the high hat)?
@MikeBarnesDrums2 күн бұрын
It’s grade 6 out of 8, so assuming you’re playing the full part accurately and cleanly, I’d say it’s moderately difficult. Based on working this tune with many students, I’d say the most difficult bit is the hi-hat details near the start. Cheers.

Thanks good tip, any advice on stopping my thumb creeping up the stick as I play this, or does it just come with time
@MikeBarnesDrums4 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching. My experience is that the answers are simpler than you might think. When you notice your grip slipping - stop, reset and go again. The value of repetition just can’t be overstated.

Hey, I know this is an old video but I'm hoping you can help. At the end of page one (around bar 30 i think) there is a 2 bar repeat. Why is the crash not included in this repeat? I've noticed that nobody plays it and not sure if I'm supposed to in my exam. Thanks!

Very strange: I'm able to play fills like this one intuitively, but when I put my mind to it, I'm likely to mess it up! 😅
@MikeBarnesDrums5 күн бұрын
Not strange! You're just human is all. And that's not to say that "putting your mind to it" isn't sometimes a good idea, often that's the only way to get new/more complex material learned - from then it's repetitions which turn the very conscious thing into subconscious skill.
