For the dyslexic and slow reader, the Bible takes two and a half years to read IF you do a chapter per day.

My first time watching this podcast. To the interviewer, IMHO try to not interrupt too much and let the people you are interviewing think and talk through things. Finishing their sentences or interrupting is not helping us hear their perspective.

The biggest paradigm shift that i made in coming to follow Jesus was influencing all of these places as much as I could with the Light. I only read scripture or Christian books, I only watched Christian shows, I only listened to Christian music - I began seeing my job throgh a lense of how I can be improving it and glorify God with it. I spoke openly about my relationship with Jesus in ALL of my relationships, there was no social interaction that did not have Him in it in some way. And that actually really helped me. When i had spent my whole life unintentionally letting in darkness, i knew it was time for a change in everything i had control over. This process alone with Jesus and seeing Him more every day, cured my anxiety and depression. I removed all social media and just started doing life with those immediately around me instead of platforms of people i never saw. It all plays a part. I highly recommend it!

We can’t understand the fullness of Scripture without the Holy Spirit. All Scriptute is God breathed which means we should look for and see Jesus in all Scripture. It all comes back to Jesus period

Honestly, this discussion's elitist language and mushy tone are kind of a turn-off. Like you have to have a PhD or be a philosopher to be a Christian and really understand the Bible, and they have figured it all out in a brand new way. I don't disagree with everything here, but they seem to really love being esoteric. Also, N.T. Wright gets way too much authority for someone who has some controversial views.

Tim's comment about the union of divine and the human shows up right away when it says in Gen. 1:1 that God created the heavens and the earth which I think implies that there was a built in union right from the start. That understanding is foundational to what he's doing.

God creates covenant, not order! I really love that you put focus on the God-human interaction in creation and throughout the Bible and in that way point out that the "image" (tzelem) in practice is a co-image of the invisible God and the visible and physical human representing him. The image is not the image of God only, but of God in his human imagebearer, and thus, this image is "our image", as it represents an "us". Christ is of course the ultimate image of the invisible God as Paul says in Colossians 1:15. I do not agree with your closing remarks. Genesis 1 - as well as the entire Bible, new and old testaments - is not focused on creating order of chaos, but rather in creating unity between the Creator and creation. As you spoke about beautifully in this session, God want to dwell in humanity as his house, his temple, his body, bride etc. Thus, as N. T. Wright keeps saying in his book "Paul", the twin theme of Paul is creation and covenant. God creates not because he is frustrated with disorder, but because he loves his creation and wants to enter into covenant with humanity. The problem is not chaos, but the enmity against unification with God found within every human being. This enmity against the one sent from God to consummate this covenant is what Psalm 89 termes "the proud sea" and the sea monster Rahab (which also means proud). I hope you take this in the best meaning. Please ask me if what I say is unintelligible! All the best, Svein (from Norway)

As I understand it, the sea is an image of chaos and disorder. It's the default state of the world before creation week, according to the opening image of Genesis. Throughout scripture we see multiple instances of God commanding and controlling the seas, and in the new creation, scripture makes a point of stating that there is no more sea. It's pretty difficult to trace this thread through the Bible and not come to the conclusion that a major part of the biblical story has to do with God bringing order out of chaos, and eventually eliminating the source of that chaos. I don't think this conflicts with the focus on covenant either.

Perhaps this is being horribly pedantic, so sorry, but... "The twin theme of Paul is creation and covenant" Hopefully Wright isn't really as reductionistic as that sounds. Paul's writings are God breathed, but our feeble attempts to summarise them are decidedly not. There are an infinite number of human narratives we might write that attempt to glorify different aspects of the divine revelation, and none of those narratives are themselves God breathed, valuable though they may be. Paul is not reducible to creation and covenant, useful themes they may be.

@@David_Burt_Art Hello, David! I see you are an animator and visual artist! How cool is that! As I read the story of creation and the Bible, its visual language is a gift to visual artists that go far beyond painting Adam and Eve in the nude! My problem with the metaphors “chaos” and “order” is that they seem to describe an organizing of inanimate objects or elements. The term covenant, on the other hand, describes the creation of a real, lasting and faithful union between persons with a will of their own, persons who formerly were estranged or enemies. It is kind of like a man taming a wild horse in order to make it his trusting and faithful companion. In Genesis 2 God seems to “tame” one human, Adam, and through him, he transforms all humans (described as living ones of the field) into “helpers like him”. This “taming” of humans includes the removal of what is against the union, in order to rebuild and rescue the person into union with God. When we say that chaos is the problem, I feel we place the problem outside of us, into the elements somewhere. But clearly, in Genesis 3, the problem was the woman´s internal enmity toward God and her problematic trust in the serpent. The same is described in Genesis 4, where the same enmity against God causes Cain to follow and trust his internal jealousy, also called the “sin crouching at the door”, instead of looking up to God and trusting the good that God would show him. The problem was not necessarily lack of willingness, but the very serpentine nature of humans. God only can rebuild humans from untamable serpents to willing and teachable children. My take on this is that the sea is the metaphor for the part of the human inner self that, in spite it´s appearances to the opposite, really resists God's every loving approach. It is this unwilling nature that Paul calls the flesh, and that he describes as an enemy of God. Through his son, God liberates the humans who will allow him from this enmity. Then the former rebel can be born into the nature of the obedient son of God. I hope what I am saying makes sense to you! Let me know if it you find any of this unintelligible! All the best, Svein

@@happy.tulip6276 Thank you for responding! I recommend reading the book if you want to know the context! My take on it is that God did not make creation to let it run its own separate course, but in order to move into it and be its energizer, its father, its light, love and future. All the best to you! Svein

Reading a SHORT book, super cheap by Rowan Williams “Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer.” His chapter on Bible is super duper helpful, ties in with baptism, communion, and prayer, in light of the the grand unifying doctrine of Father-son-holy spirit as the meta. Lots of helpful intro to Cassian, Gregory and Origen who struggled and leave us their story.

Post Bible Christian is someone who accepts Jesus but has never read the whole Bible. It is very common actually, more common than not. There are people I talk to today that have lived their whole life in the church and now in their 70s but have yet to ever read the Bible all the way through, they only read what is pointed out to them in a sermon. Another way of seeing this is when people don't have a physical Bible in their hand anymore, but a Bible app on their phone that is just another notification and not an actual relationship with Christ or The Father. It's not meant to be judgey, it's just a way to describe the difference and how a lot of people have backed away from the Book itself and knowing and loving the Book that leads to a deeper relationship with Jesus.
