Cancelling IFR in the air in this situation is not wise. Had a deer jumped out and you had to do a go-around, the go-around would have to be executed in IMC without having your IFR clearance anymore. You also cannot legally cancel IFR unless you’re either in VFR conditions (which you weren’t because of the cloud separation rules not being met) or you’re on the ground (which you weren’t). If you shoot an approach, break out, can maintain VFR and have no problem executing a go-around while maintaining VFR, then by all means cancel in the air so that the next IFR guy can come in or go.

I think you need to explain why you think it was wise, not to mention legal, to cancel IFR while you were still in the air, in IFR conditions...

Great vid - was going to comment on the hold programming, but see you already did. My RV-7 has a similar, slightly more minimalist setup - G3X, GFC500, GTN625, and one Garmin NavCom integrated, so I have a bit less on the audio side, and no nice MFD 7" G3X or nice big 750. Would ask that, in any future vids like this, you keep in the programming. It is always good to see, for both, "wow, that's better than how I would have done it.." and for, "what is he doing? Hold at Waypoint is right under his finger???" Thanks much, and nice job on it overall.

Great video! My first captain job at Delta was on the 737-2xx ( -232s and -247s). We had dual VOR/ILS/DME/ADF and marker beacons. Your suite puts it to shame! After 8 years on the 75/76 an old part of my brain was reawakened. It was fun, but hard work now and then. Manipulating displays and managing the system takes a lot of time- the PNF would do that in the airlines if you weren't on autopilot. Keep safe and fly that airplane first. Happy landings.

This reminds me of a ILS landing at LAX (in an old 172) where we got down to 250 ft still didn't see the strobes, or the runway, except my wife caught a runway light flash by and a few feet lower we broke out with 12,000 feet of runway ahead. Given that were trapped in the LA basin with 10,000 icing level and most airports BELOW IFR...this brand new (foolish) IFR pilot luckily survived a string of bad decisions.

Thanks for all the comments. I am not a pro pilot or CFI but like to make videos so I can see some of the mistakes I make and then figure out how to do better. I have been flying this approach into friday harbor regularly for many years, originally as an NDB approach before the GPS approach was published. In this approach I made some mistakes and learned from them. One mistake was putting 4000 into altitude select for the climb in hold, even though I was cleared to and read back 3000. The controller was nice and just cleared me to 4000 when he saw I was going up past 3000. The usual hold altitude is 4000 so maybe that is why my brain put that number into the GFC500. The second thing I could have done better was programming the hold into the GTN750xi. Since it was a published hold and it felt like I had about 30 seconds before I got to the waypoint, I decided to just delete the approach and then re enter it with the procedure turn, which is the same as the hold, so the autopilot could follow it. After playing with the GTN trainer on the ipad I realized how I could have done it with a lot fewer button pushes. Fun stuff. And next time I will fly it without the autopilot 😂

Great video, even for trainee VFR pilots, about why they shouldn't take risks in terms of weather. When I was learning to fly, my instructor intentionally took me into IMC to teach me a very valuable lesson. I was totally disoriented. Amazes me to watch this type of approach to minimums in such weather conditions.

Is there water inside your wing tip light?
@allenhugh1
@allenhugh1 4 күн бұрын
Yeah. Those are Stene Quasar CX wingtip lights. I got them during the pandemic and I think they had issues with the lens supplier. They assured me that the light is sealed; however, you remind me to circle back with them and see if there is a fix. I think that the usual lenses don’t have a low point at the bottom for water to collect in. The water drains quickly after a flight so I usually forget about it. I did drill a hole in the lens for the draining, though!

My 182 (N4428R) is similarly equipped: I found your "direct to" 3NM buttonology confusing as you went too fast. Golden Oldies also has a nice description of this process that describes the "button pressing" in a bit more detail. You do a great job, but INMO, you are making an assumption of viewer knowledge that likely isn't present. Sort of like defining a word by using that some word. Thank you for taking the time to present this topic.

The use of local landmarks by local pilots should be discouraged. It can be confusing for those not familiar with them and/or the area. When I was flying in proximity to aircraft near me, I wanted to know where they were. " Five miles Southeast at three thousand" beats the hell out of "Over five twenty bridge" or "Over Bellevue"??

Agree. Reporting bellevue is part of the arrival procedure and is right on the edge of class delta for the airport in question, krnt. So, it is a highly controlled area. That being said, it is a very busy corridor for departures from boeing field to the east. Ads-b traffic is really important here, and it is inside a mode c veil so everyone is visible unless there is a malfunction. I have once filed a Nasa report on this area due to a close call.

Local landmarks may or may not be approved VFR reporting points. Where I do most of my flying, Mormon Temple, Brushy Peak, Oakland Coliseum, Golden Gate Bridge, Lake Chabot, etc, etc are all recognized VFR points and marked as such on the TCA chart.

Do you have the Garmin GFC500 auto pilot? I fly 2 planes with that AP. One with a GPS400W and one with a GTN750XI. Both will turn much sharper than 90 degrees, for example, while the TOGA button is flying back to the IAF and I activate the approach to make another pass the turn is maybe 150 degrees.
