@@dennis1562 that is incorrect. That is not how the weight transfer works.
@dennis1562
@dennis1562 Ай бұрын
That is how it works. Your mistake. The load is on 1 16in 2x4. The cribbing just raised it higher. The cribbing underneath doesn’t make it stronger. 1ft of 2x4 is rated at 200-300 lbs, and that is on end not flat, which would be weaker. By adding a middle 2x4 in each row, the weight is then transferred to the ground. Your misunderstanding has you playing jenga with your car and or worse, your life.
@RoadRoyals
@RoadRoyals Ай бұрын
@@dennis1562 so you're saying, 10 short length of 2x4s reinforced at each end are going to snap simultaneously? A small car, even with a large heavy engine is not going to break these cribs. This car has now been on these for 2 years now. You're overthinking the metrics of what kind of weight all four of these cribs are holding at once.
@dennis1562
@dennis1562 Ай бұрын
Screwing together stacked 2x4s is not reinforcing them. You have not added any strength to them. Only 1 2x4 needs to fail, the one unsupported 2x4 under each tire. I am an overthinker. I also did not claim this was better than a jackstand. When you get a chance, post a vid showing how you jacked it up to get it there. I bet that would get a lot of commets too

Those are used to allow the vehicle's weight to rest naturally on the suspension when repairing welding and fitting body panels. For everything else just use jack stands.
@KDlGG
@KDlGG 2 ай бұрын
Not always, let’s not forget suspension components with bushings. Needs to be torqued with the vehicle in its resting position, aka not at full droop, most cars with a wheel on the ground you can’t get under to torque something like a lower control arm.
@roadrunner40
@roadrunner40 2 ай бұрын
@KDlGG suspension components can be positioned by hand or if working against a spring, use a jack under the control arm. In some cases there are components that would be very difficult to access with the wheel on.
@KDlGG
@KDlGG 2 ай бұрын
@ with a jack you’re entirely guessing how the arms are gonna be positioned when you have the car on it’s own weight. With the wheel on you know exactly
@roadrunner40
@roadrunner40 2 ай бұрын
@KDlGG for example you can raise the lower control arm until the suspension is in correct position or until most of vehicle weight is on the jack. That would be more than adequate, it is not that critical. I retired after 40 years in the business and 15 of those I was a steering, suspension, alignment technician. I've done many classic cars, including two of my own, and three that I still have contact with. All of them are still riding on the same polyurethane control arm bushings I installed 20 or more years ago.
@roadrunner40
@roadrunner40 2 ай бұрын
@KDlGG sorry but you're wrong. Maybe it's a difference in experience. For example. Let's say a vehicle exerts 1000 lbs of pressure on the left front spring while resting on the wheel assembly. If you raise the vehicle in the right spot on the lower control arm, it will still exert 1,000 lbs of pressure on the spring. And either way that is the position in which the bushings should be tightened. Also it doesn't have to be + or - .001 tolerance. Some situations you cannot even get to the fasteners with the wheel in place.

here's what I believed happened, because it just happened to me.... because the lip is held with a row of thin stock screws, it wobbles the lip at highway speeds you don't notice but the font part bends the lip down badly what helps is using a slightly bigger screw with a new "screw bite" clip that secures the screw and lip better I KNEW this would happened but I lagged replacing em! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Half the time I'm working at the wheel area so jack stands are better. Takes up less space and easier to get around. Plus, to get clearance, you would have to jack the car up pretty high.
@RoadRoyals
@RoadRoyals 3 ай бұрын
@@curtisi4403 this is what most people are doing when working on their vehicle anyway. This is more for long term projects/storage. Although, you can stack jack stands on top of these under your pinch welds or frame and have a more sturdy base but most again don't really need their vehicle to be that high up to work in the wells anyway!

@@RoadRoyals How are you able to jack the car up that high. Very impressed with that. In the past I used to hang up one of my cars and sometimes crawl underneath just to clean it. My floor jack I'm most certain can't get that clearance.
@RoadRoyals
@RoadRoyals 3 ай бұрын
@@curtisi4403 pretty much just in levels. So I'll get it to a certain height with my jack, then put stands under it temporarily. Then use some sort of large block of wood to get it up higher the next level to fit the wheel cribs under. It's definitely kind of sketchy getting up that high, but you just have to go slow and be extra careful. This car is still on these same stands a couple years later and I completely redid the whole underside of the chassis on them.

Measure once. Then use the cut piece to measure the rest. Throw out the excess or repurpose it for something else. Now the 1/8 is accounted at the end with the leftover. Also helps to have a marker with the width of the cut. So it's much more understandable where to cut.
