The Bactrian Camel (Oreocamelus bactrianus) is a large even-toed hoofed mammal native to Central Asia, it is the largest of the six extant camel species and is the only extant camel species to be found in the Holarctic Kingdom, it is also the only extant species of the genus Oreocamelus, which also includes the extinct Knobloch's Camel (Oreocamelus knoblochi) and Siwalik Camel (Oreocamelus sivalensis), all members of the Oreocamelus genus possess two humps on their back instead of one hump, the bactrian camel has a large woolly coat of fur that helps it keep warm in the freezing climate, there are two bactrian camel subspecies: the Gobi Camel (Oreocamelus bactrianus bactrianus) and the Kunlun Shan Camel (Oreocamelus bactrianus kunlunshanensis).

Even though the Australian Government culls / shoots camels, they do not make the process of international export simple. It costs us to catch them & remove them from remote desert landscapes which is expensive, then truck them from these remote locations, quarantine, prepare for aircraft loading, abide by necessary veterinary tests and then the cost of transportation. We would love to tell you it’s an easy and cost affordable exercise, but in reality and despite our best efforts, the process is extremely expensive. Thank you for your comments and interest. If you would like to further your enquiry please email us at [email protected]

What's the point feeding them supplementary feed? Australia is turning rapidly into desert and these animals could he used to restore it back to green pastures and open forests, if managed holistically. What a waste.

Hello 'New Name', These camels were only temporarily held here and had been in this yard for approximately 3 days. These camels are not culled in the sense of being shot and left to die. Their capture is part of an industry development, on Aboriginal lands, supporting Aboriginal employment and processing the camels for meat consumption. Thank you for your comments as they help us to explain and other can learn more about the Australian Feral Camel population.

@@kaiyack it is not likely; sea freight vessels would have to considerably alter their layout to make certain it was compliant with animal welfare and comfort. The Australian Government is generally not in favour; which is somewhat of a paradox for many to appreciate given that on the other hand they are shooting camels, and as far as I know there is no other party / persons present monitoring camel welfare during culls.

@@karenellis6421 Australian government does allow maritime shipment, otherwise they would not have released specific regulations for major livestocks, including camelids, going by ship. Yes there are provisions for animal welfare, but they are easy to follow. And U.S. government allows for import of camels into US from Australia and Canada. Additionally, check out the livestock shipping company Vroon. Purpose built livestock vessels with desalination plants on board. If there's fuel, there will be fresh water. Silo capacity for 15+ days with 3500 head on board feeding at 10kg dry fodder per animal. Modern ships. Far from converting general cargo ships. Seems a better fate for our camel friends to be at a dairy in the US desert than being shot and left to rot in the Outback...

All these people commenting putting Australia down for the treatment of camels. The Government in this country is like any other they don’t give two shits except the money going into their pockets. So many countries want Australian Camels because they have no disease. Maybe look up the emu war another Australian Government fuck up.
