Despite how great these guys were at standing Judo, most of these submission escapes this documentary demonstrated would never work in reality against a decent grappler. It's obvious they were "only" nage-waza experts back then, and were quite clueless when it came to newaza.

in a real judo fight it would be different. This is staged, just demonstrating techniques. The opponents not really fighting

yes, but even as a presentation it's extremely impressive. To be this light and control momentum, leverage and angle at which they are grappling to avoid throws and be unharmed. When it comes to principles of judo it's hard to make them shine more than here. Judo- gentle way. Seiryoku-Zenyo - maximum efficiency for used energy.

Absolutely fantastic to watch how an old man can avoid being thrown by black belts who are taller and stronger than him, by simply adjusting weight distribution and using leverage to counter. The amount of experience one needs to achieve this body sensitivity and timing is phenomenal. Judo and Jiu Jitsu are two of my favorite martial arts.

As far as I know: Sode-guruma-jime is more or less nami juji jime from the rear. Hasami(=scissors) jime is when you trap uke's neck between your arms, or an arm and a leg, like caught in a scissor lift. If you do a military style Hadaka jime with one arm behind ukes neck it could basically be a Hasami jime

cảm giác là ông già dùng trọng lực của đối thủ để quật ngã đối thủ...thứ 2 là khi bị đối thủ định tấn công thì ông già nắm lấy dây đai, ôm thắt lưng đối thủ để giữ vững bản thân mình và cũng là tìm sơ hở để đây chân đối thủ...ở anh thứ 2 thì anh này hình như k có trụ...luôn bị ông già quật luôn...

I love this video because it does not only show Kesa Gatame but it also demonstrated how to evade do osae at the beginning then uki gatame to control uke and finnally execute the Kesa Gatame. Amazing instruction !

@PTYBIN The subtitles were not added by me, i just split the video into parts. It is interesting to know what he is saying, but since it is not very detailed and sometimes even flawed one could watch those videos as well without sound and subtitles.
