Did you have difficulty fitting the battery into the cavity? It seems to be a really tight fit and difficult to get all the cables in properly.
@LowEndLobster4 сағат бұрын
I did not. Jazz cavities are relatively deep and a battery can fit laying down

This series has been so helpful in helping me choose a preamp for my diy stingray build. I was very close to getting the East but I think this just edges it. The only thing I don't like is the knobs, I take it they're a standard size and can be changed?
@LowEndLobster6 сағат бұрын
Yes you can absolutely change the knobs. Save yourself the headache and get the BTC and the mid control separate so the guts are on 2 smaller pcbs. Way easier fitment

This seems like a product that isn't quite ready Like a luthier made something for himself that he's happy with and didn't take the time to think about the little things that a consumer might care about

I have a $1500 fender jazz bass that neck dives more than my Sire. So Fender must be using cheaper tuners than Sire does?

Some early Metro Expresses are on Reverb for $459. Might be worth buying one and then upgrading the pickups and preamp...

That's very much a stage-owning instrument. You can't miss its tone or its look! Personally, I don't have the chops or the style to carry off such an instrument BUT YOU DO!!!! As you say "very nice."

I would appreciate it if you would play the low C and D notes as this is a 5 string and we have a good idea already what the 4 string basses sound like. Thanks!

My thing with budget basses are; while they are cheap and affordable and feel good for like the first six months. Fretboard woods like laurel are not intended to last long. Budget basses are cool but know you’ll be on the market for another bass as soon as you buy one. I’d get one for writing purposes just to preserve my expensive cool basses

I have to assume that manufacturers who send basses in for review make sure they are ready to go. That is NOT what the rest of us get. Case in point. I just bought this Super 5 in Dr. Brown Burst. Cosmetically the satin finish looks cheap. The cheesy white logo makes it look cheaper yet..Mine came with 5 miserably high frets and no relief whatsoever so if someone at MTD is looking at these they'd better get a seeing eye dog. A complete fret job ensued. The fretboard drank Lemon oil like it was dying of thirst. The fretboard the way it came was so dry and scratchy it need several treatments to get it pliable. Restring and complete setup followed. Hate the truss rod access. The truss rod is too far recessed even when you get the cover off. The battery compartment. They do make battery compartments you don't have to unscrew and scrape up trying to get it off. Should have made this a string through. It's a lot of work for a $1200+ bass guitar. The pickups are overly harsh. Still trying to find a useable sound. The Asymmetrical neck I am not fond of. The neck is a whole lot wider than it needs to be. Spend a few more hundred if you want a "35 scale and buy a Lakland 55-02. I have one and this bass does not in any way compete with that bass on any level.

I always wonder why reviews do not mention the often annoying things about basses like dead spots, wobbly B- and E-strings (visible on tuners), accuracy of tuning gear in combination with the nut, the action close to the nut (which can influence the tone on the first frets).

I have one of the older SUB basses. According to Sterling it was made in 2013. It doesn't have the string tree nor the silver plate over the controls. I think it might be rare. I haven't found any like mine on the web. The pick-up on it is hot. I play mine in nearly the same sound configuration as Lobster. I'm not sure if I'm going to mod it or not. I have a set of Ernie Ball Slinky 100-45 on the way.

Just bought one of these partly based on viewing this demo, thanks. I agree that the neck dive is not cool. IMO the pickups are indeed bright sounding but still decent. I plan to swap them out for some EMG HZ passives at some point (EMG pickup user for over 30 years). Nitpicks notwithstanding the TMB30 is a very playable and musical instrument as-is. Given its very approachable price point I'd rate it only slightly higher than you (around 3 out of 5).

I love how some commenters are trashing you for stating objective facts: it doesn't sound like the models it's emulating. Or they move the goalposts by saying "but it's versatile!". If someone can't tell the diff between the Variax and a Stingray then they have no business calling themselves a bass player.

It is unclear from the video what is so nice and special about this bass. Good sound, yes. No doubt about the build quality, the components, the playability and the looks. But I do have a lot of doubts if it worth the money. If you want something special, OK. But compared to quality basses from e.g. Ibanez or Yamaha the tone (in particular with EQ) is not distuingishable from boutique basses. Or does this bass better on e.g. dead spot, low B tone, better humpf-attack, warmer sound, etc
