Being a french Canadian who used to live in northern Québec, I really appreciate the historic and cultural references that are in the game.

I saw that this game and it's sequel were on gamepass and decided to give them a try. I just finished Kona today, and I have a similar experience, but I felt that some elements that the game presents were underused, and some things are barely explained. Great review btw. Great job on not giving away the plot of the game!

This game got so much hate when it was released. I don't think that was justified. Sure, not as good as the classic old part 1 & 2, but i enjoyed it. I miss the original voice of Oscar though

I'd watched playthroughs of the first couple of games, but heard that the 3rd instalment was pretty poor, so I avoided it. But just last week, I signed up with GOG, and wanted to try things out, and there was a free demo of Syberia: The World Before, so I got it, enjoyed it, and purchased the full game. I had to laugh when you mentioned that Kate had a habit of nicking things - I've only really just started, but already she has asked a kindly hotel owner if she could see an old phone book (had to be about 50 years old!), and she promptly ripped out the page that was of interest to her! And being set in about 2002, there would have been plenty of fax machines around. It's a shame, because it has really marked her down as a bit of a klepto/vandal, and a slightly less sympathetic character than I'd like her to be. Thanks for this review - I doubt very much I'll be playing it, but it is useful for me now I'm playing the most recent game in the series.

Thanks for the video! In order to categorise Still life, I'm afraid I need to expand a little... I've been a point & click adventure enthusiast since the late 1980s (mainly detective puzzles and cyberpunk subgenres). And it's safe to say that the genre has had its ups and downs. A high point was undoubtedly in the mid-90s. Titles such as "Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Fathers", "Broken Sword", "The Dig", "Full Throttle", "Blade Runner" and others were the innovative cutting edge of the gaming scene at the time and impressed with, among other things, dense stories, good manageability, beautifully and lovingly drawn graphics, a well-rounded multimedia experience and top Hollywood-class voice actors. The studios invested a lot of money and had great success with the games. From the end of the 90s, real-time strategy games and first-person shooters increasingly pushed point & click adventure games from the gaming throne. The studios tried to react to this and modernised the genre, to make it more "upbeat". But this mostly went wrong and resulted in the late 90s to mid-2000s being an absolute low point for the genre: the 3D or 2 1/2D graphics looked sterile and were prone to errors, the scenes looked empty and dead, the characters and NPCs were bumpy and uncanny, the dialogues were flat and expressionless, mostly spoken by cheaper category C and D actors. And most importantly, the puzzles were too easy and were often replaced by an overabundance of silly, annoying and out-of-place in-game puzzles (completely overdone and unrealistic mechanisms, safe locks or circuits, etc.) that often disrupted the flow and enjoyment of the game. Typical for the time are also too many scenes and empty intermediate screens that you have to click through again and again - convenient mechanisms such as hotkeys, maps and shortcuts were mostly not yet available. Even games with a good, promising story became tedious and annoying, flat, bland and disappointing. And one of these games with an actually good story that falls exactly into this category is "Still Life". Other examples include "The Moment of Silence", "Gabriel Knight - Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned", "Syberia"... Nevertheless, after this phase, adventure games started to pick up again and from the mid-2010s and the entry of several independent labels (e.g. Wadjeteye Games, Grundislav Games, etc.), the the great adventure-expierence of the 1990s was regained and even clearly surpassed.

Is it just me or does William Hamilton look like former Disney CEO Michael Eisner? lol No idea why the game has a mixed towards negative general reaction - let alone almost no fanfare. Seems really cool, and despite the minor flaws you mention, seems like something I'd like to check out. According to Wikipedia, a sequel is due out later this year! Wonder how that will compare.

Scratch that, it has really positive reviews on steam. Still sad that it's an almost unknown gem. If I worked hard on a game, I'd love reviews like this. In-depth and honest; not super spoilery, but informative enough to give a general picture. :)

Nice review, played the game last year and didn't finish it. Nothing against the idea of the story (even though it was quite a departure from the last game) but it just felt really rough around the edges and it didn't hold my attention.

If you’ve ever read Rob Brydon’s autobiography-and you can’t be the other one who did-he wrote about his time on the games and spoke about how he hated them; not the games themselves but the language and the flow of them. Too difficult, he said.

Those two puzzles (hieroglyphics and the tango music/flowers are almost impossible to complete without guidance or a bit of luck with timing). Otherwise I did enjoy the game, especially liking the screwball personality of LIz (compounded by the journey through her subconscious). Offbeat enough to be distinctive and a satisfying experience, without being exactly groundbreaking. I would recommend the experience the game creates to anyone interested.

Thank you for your review. I played 'Yesterday' yesterday (literally), so I wanted to hear what others made of the game. I agree that the hotspot mechanism is frustrating, but I found the tip system to be very well though out. Enough of a hint to get you moving again, but not enough to exactly spoil any puzzle. And the tips were always relevant. I did find the story in general to be easy to follow, but the specific details often flew by and led to a certain amount of confusion as to who had been affected in what way at what point in time at certain stages. It sort of blurred together to an extent. Overall, I enjoyed the game, but I much preferred Pendulo's 'The Next Big Thing'.

Nice review! Never properly got into the Runaway series despite playing both the first and second one. Not really sure why but I have bad memories of pixelhunting and obtuse puzzles. Perhaps this game would have fit me better with the hotspot highlighter and hint system.

I liked it and I'm a huge Testament of Sherlock Holmes fan, though if I may suggest a few things. 1. Your intro is a tad hard on the ears and a bit long 2. I like your sense of humor, your voice works great for this style of review 3. I'd mess with the audio levels a bit more, have a background track playing in the background from the game that's not distracting (There were some dead zones in the audio) 4. Cover more of these games that haven't had reviews in 8-10 years and tag them appropriately, seriously, you have the newest review for these games with the best audio quality by far and they're very entertaining. I wish you luck on your endeavors!

@ValkyrReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comments and I appreciate the suggestions! You're definitely right about the intro and I have a much shorter and quieter one lined up already for future videos, which I'm hoping to get back to now after having been away from KZbin for a while. The audio is the worst part of video editing for me and I'm trying to work on improving the backing tracks.

Nice review, i am always skeptical when i hear that a game is made by one single person. It is cool and all and credit to the developer but with very few exceptions these games are very limited and they would have been better if more people were involved. My time is limited as well (and it becomes more limited the older i get) and in this gaming market i would just prefer to to try out games that seems to have gotten more attention from more people. The visuals looks alright in this game but if the story and puzzles are let down then it is something i don't want to spend my time on.
@ValkyrReviews
@ValkyrReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on that, very few people have got such a wide range of talents to be able to make all aspects of a game themselves. And if they have to be lacking in some areas, graphics are far less important than story and gameplay.
