I studied here back in 1995 or so. What a throw back to see Sensei Art. I was in class one time doing drills and my vision went yellow. Art took me out into the seating area and sat with me with a sprite until i could see again. Much respect.

Violent handshake defense against handshake set-up
@MaximumMartialArts
@MaximumMartialArts 20 күн бұрын
Please read the description of the video: 'Handshake techniques are a precursor to the cross wrist techniques, and serve as a means to teaching Hapkido concepts without over-stimulating adrenaline. This allows students to learn the Yu Won Hwa (Soft, Circular, Flowing) concepts, without feeling like they need to power through their techniques. They are meant as a teaching tool for students just learning Hapkido locking. Obviously, their isn't a good reason to hurt someone trying to shake your hand. But, since we shake other's hands every day, these techniques give you a good starting frame of reference for learning.'

Just as previous comments, it is important for Taekwondo students to know how to punch. Taekwondo without proper punching technique is highly ineffective.

Generally, these defenses look pretty appealing. My school is currently working on knife and pistol defense. The only suggestion I would make would be to always control or be in possession of the weapon after countering the attack (assuming you did not simply throw the attacker or move away to a safe distance as some of the counters did).

Is it legal in sparring?
@MaximumMartialArts
@MaximumMartialArts Жыл бұрын
That is a good question. It depends on the rules set for the type of sparring. Most Taekwondo and Karate sparring rules do not allow knee strikes, whereas kickboxing rules usually do allow knee strikes. We don't allow knee strikes during our regular sparring inside our Taekwondo class, but we do use lots of knee strikes during our self-defense training.

I know this video is over two years old, but I'm going to comment anyway. Firstly, I think the video was very professionally produced and I enjoyed watching it. Secondly, I think the young lady shows remarkable skill at hapkido, and I cannot see her remaining a yellow belt for very long. Thirdly, I'm surprised at the number of skills the student had to demonstrate in her test. Should she ever have to defend herself - and I sincerely hope that doesn't happen - I think she could put to flight all but the most determined attackers just with what she has learned to receive her yellow belt. Watching this video, and what I've read elsewhere about it, has prompted me to seriously think about learning hapkido. If Maximum Martial Arts University opens a branch her in Miami, let me know and I'll be along! Unfortunately, I'm sixty-one years old, so I'm not sure whether it's a good idea.

Thank you sir for uploading this Grandmaster. I have just started training Hapkido. Which stance is more effective front or back stance while Throwing punches in Hapkido? I Feel more comfortable with the back stance.
@MaximumMartialArts
@MaximumMartialArts 2 жыл бұрын
Good Afternoon Sir. No need for the honorific 'Grandmaster'. I'm just a Hapkido student that teaches other students with less experience. You have a very good question and the answer is both stances, as throwing punches is a fluid activity, which requires the shifting of weight to transfer energy into a target. Traditional martial arts train students to transition from a back stance to front stance, while doing a block/ counter-punch sequence. If you were to consider American Boxing, this would be equivalent to performing a rear draw or a shoulder roll to evade followed by a counter-cross. The movement is universal, transferring into a form of back stance to evade, cover or parry then transitioning to a form of front stance at the apex of the counter striking movement, especially when striking with the rear hand. Trying to hold one stance while striking without shifting the weight distribution back and forth fluidly would be a mistake. It's like a pitcher that doesn't properly transfer weight, when throwing a ball. I hope this answers your question. Good luck in you Hapkido training!

@@MaximumMartialArts Thank You so much Sir, I am currently a white belt. The Head of my school is a 8th Dan, Grandmaster. He is a great teacher and motivator, but he outsources a lot of the instructions to another Instructor 3rd Dan who makes me feel like an idiot. So I am reluctant to answer questions , sometimes. But I refuse to give up. Once again thank you, Sir,
@MaximumMartialArts

I'm sorry that you aren't having the best experience with the junior instructor. Sometimes it can come from a sense of ego on the instructor's part, and other times it can just be one personality not matching with another. We are all humans and make mistakes, especially when it comes to teaching. That instructor might have a hard to knowing how to properly answer questions outside of your Grandmaster's curriculum syllabus. I can only guess, based off my own development and periodical weaknesses as an instructor. I hope you are able to find a way to amicably work with the other instructor. If you have questions, please feel free to ask on his channel. Hapkido is one big community, and I am happy to help any way I can.

Which knuckles do you use for striking? 🙂 Good video!
@MaximumMartialArts
@MaximumMartialArts 2 жыл бұрын
I usually teach students to focus on hitting with the index knuckle, this way it will properly align the punch and ensure that the first two knuckles impact. When most people focus on hitting with the first two knuckles, there is a high chance that the third knuckle will also impact.

@@MaximumMartialArts Thank you! But do you feel with a vertical fist the bottom 3 work better? I can connect with my top 2 knuckles with a diagonal or horizontal fist but find it difficult with a vertical straight, unless I angle my elbow or bend my wrist.
@MaximumMartialArts
@MaximumMartialArts 2 жыл бұрын
I don't particularly prefer punching with the bottom three with vertical punches, but I know many who do with great success. I would recommend not punching with full force on any part of the skull, but the same goes for the first two knuckles. Great placement with the right amount of force is all that is ever needed.

Steven Seagal? Steven Seagal does not have a patent on that lock. That lock exists in many martial arts.

We give each lock an easy name for our students to remember. There are formal names of each lock, which are many times unintuitive. Since this channel is made for our students, we use the common names we refer to in our classes.

@@MaximumMartialArts Yes. Some schools give Americanized names, others make you memorize Asian terms. It is not important what you call a lock or hold, what is important is can you apply the technique.
