POV switches are hard to get right. Some authors are good at it, some have more trouble.

A TBR list.....what an idea. I just have piles, shelves, boxes, of books I haven't read yet. Never considered making a list of which to read when. Does it help? I tend to just grab one and jump in.

The longest was War and Peace. Don't bother, it's awful . Comfort read has to be The Hobbit. All time favorite - The Star Beast by Heinlein (at least for today).

I'd love to see this book featured in book clubs, neighborhood sessions, classrooms, everywhere. We so often don't get original (or at least first hand) sources, and this is a powerful source. It needs to be more widely read.

It is so disappointing when authors just abdicate like this. It makes me angry, not just for what IS, but also for what COULD BE, and a better book.

Hi! New subscriber. Another YA that I feel digs deep into the kids’ draw to brutality (in a much more gory way, but so well-written and realistic I was in pure disgust, disbelief and unable to put the books down) is the Broken Empire trilogy. It’s deeply beautiful, but so violent and philosophical. The protagonist is presented to us at 12 y/o, a deeply disturbed and traumatized kid who found catharsis for years- after being abandoned to die by his father, a king- on going on a criminal rampage with a band of outlaws. Then plot happens, and he decides he wants to be an Emperor, we journey alongside with him in a post-apocalyptic medieval world, a scenery I’ve never seen anything like. If it’s something you’d want to explore, there you have it ^^ just prepare for something stronger than Game of Thrones, bc oof… I’m not sure I can read the first book again, as beautiful as it was.

That sounds amazing! Thank you so much for the recommendation!
@bonitaschraut91947 ай бұрын
Of course, if you let your kid read The Illead, they get plenty of brutality and gore.

Most of us are fortunate enough to be shown rather forcibly early on that life is not in our control. When that doesn't happen, this is the result.
@gmpotterbooks7 ай бұрын
Control is often an illusion and the pursuit of control is often used to mask fear

This is why I never really got into Greek myths. They are awful people. (Maybe if Persephone got an umbracat........)

I don't have goals per se, but I do keep track of what I read. Actually that's one way I realized my eyes needed medical attention - I had read less than half of what I did the year before.

The worst book I read this year is Land by Simon Winchester. I've read and loved many others by him, I preordered it, looked forward to reading it. And It Was Awful. The whole thing was how awful owning land is(even tho he admits he does), and how all land is stolen, and people only ruin things, especially if they have lots of money (unless they have the right politics). So disappointing.

You make a good point. Being available, versus being taught, being required is an important distinction that gets lost in the screaming. Please, less screaming, more thinking, people.

Love A Christmas Carol. Note, Bob was not an unskilled worker - he was both literate and numerate, able to speak and write well, able to present himself as a solid individual.

Frodo and Sam are almost archetypes of returning military. I desperately wish we had a Grey Havens for they who need it for their returning brokenness.

I've heard that the middle of a trilogy is often the best. It's very true in this case!

I relate to the "7" comment. When I wrote for the newspaper, I had a deadline. I HAD to turn in my articles, even if I was totally blocked. I found that often, just starting in the middle and continuing to write would break the block. Then I could go back and make it readable and comprehensible and turn-in-able.

For fiction, if I get stuck, I'll put what happens in brackets and keep moving. Sometimes an early draft is 1/3 to 1/2 brackets.

I love both the books and the movie. I agree, Tom being left out of the movie is bad, but a 50 hour movie is just not feasible.😊❤
