I’m someone who had always heard about Leone but I had only seen one of his films for the longest time which was Once Upon a Time in the West. Granted, an AMAZING film and it was the best Western I’ve ever seen even though never watched much Westerns back then, and it’s STILL the best Western movie imo after having seen much more. As someone who recently did a proper Leone watch through, I will say that I agree that For A Few Dollars More gets underrated. While Fistful has obvious Leone mannerisms, I honestly felt it was Few Dollars More where I could see, as someone coming from Once Upon a Time in the West, which imo is the “most Leone Leone film” (even America imo is “less Leone”, still amazing film though), it was in Few Dollars More I was like “Oh, there’s the West Leone I remember.”

Great conversation guys. I haven't seen Nosferatu or Anora and a few others yet, but here is my top 10 of 2024 (having only seen 19 movies of 2024) 1. Dune Part 2 2. Deadpool and Wolverine 🤷♂ 3. Furiosa 4. Terrifer 3 5. The Substance 6. A Complete Unknown 7. The First Omen 8. Alien: Romulus 9. Civil War 10. Immaculate

@@dustinabraham that’s a good list. It was a weird year but we got some good stuff an a lot less franchise junk. I’m not a Deadpool guy so I haven’t seen it yet. I’m definitely going to see the Bob Dylan movie tho. I personally hated Alien Romulus. Great premise with a few cool sequences but a lot of the effects were subpar imo and it just got really silly to me.
@dustinabraham8 күн бұрын
I'm not a Deadpool guy either, but I'm a Wolverine guy. And it was a fun movie. It had some good laughs, and good comedies are few and far between these days. How much you like A Complete Unknown will depend upon how much you like Bob Dylan's music. The performers all did an amazing job learning the songs and instruments and to sing in the styles of the artists.

LOVE this movie. Great chat, got a sub out of me. We did a Body Double doc a while ago you may appreciate. Keep it up.
@stevewright29722 ай бұрын
"Body Double" reminded me a lot of the Coen Bros movie "Barton Fink" because you're basically presented with scenes, images, and even music that didn't fit together. Couple that with Actor Craig Wasson's character literally stalking the attractive woman and a tall man with a pony tail and mirrored sunglasses who winds up snatching her purse on the beach and eventually murdering her and you don't know why. In a strange way I really liked this movie. Dude in the upper left. I'm loving your "Dark Side Of The Moon" Poster next to the David Bowie "Aladdin Sane" poster.

It's been years since I have seen this, but am kind of interested to watch it again now. I really hope you guys check out Once Were Warriors at some point, it is kind of adjacent to this in some respects but I think you would all really enjoy it.
@truthhurts-g3o2 ай бұрын
The Achilles heel of 'Videodrome' is that it is based on a fallacious premise: "Body is reality". Also, ideas like 'Television is the retina of the mind's eye', are not only fallacious, but laughable. During the 80's, we watched these types of films out of curiosity, but we were not gullible enough to believe they were anything more than irrational trash: that's a new 21st century joke on young audiences and critics, who seek out art, where there is only mystification and outrage on show. If Cronenberg were a genius, he would produce a film on 'the human condition' (which is an immaterial mental abstraction) without punctuating it with electric (sex and violent) shocks. If corporeal substance was the sum total of 'reality' - as Cronenberg preaches in Videodrome, then cats, dogs and grasshoppers, would be engrossed by Cronenberg's movies. Can that be demonstrated?

Glad the hiatus is over .. love this movie not seen it in ages .. might introduce the kids to it. On the punk debate ... for me it's an attitude - it's about liking what you like regardless of anything or anyone else. It's about calling out bullshit and not putting up with it regardless of if it is at home, at work or out in society, not letting anyone tell you what you should be or should do. It has never been about the music or the clothes you wear - do you. Looking forward to the see what Chris makes of the Abyss. Josh , anyone mentioned you look a bit like Robert Eggers?

“The television screen is the retina of the mind’s eye. Therefore the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore television is reality. And reality is less than television.” Dr. Brian Oblivion

I didn´t watch any analysis of videodrome talking about ideology, which I think is at the core of the film. Videodrome was created by Brian Oblivium, a television prophet, intending to make videodrome audience hallucinate tv programs as reality (visions) and ultimately developing a new organ/tumor into their brain. Barry Convex, on the other hand, wants to use Videodrome politically to scrap videodrome's degenerate audience, he brainwashes Max debilitated mind into killing his partners and then to kill Bianca Oblivium, but she manages to reprogram Max into killing Convex and at last making Max kills himself in the promise he will be reborn in a new flesh. Curiously Bianca Oblivium continues her father's mission in a church building which functions like a doss-house where destitutes receive not food or beds but television sets to watch. The film is clearly about the war of competing institutions fighting for dominance of people's minds.
