The Rains Came ... in Spain, mainly on the plain. Terrible title. Might as well address the biggie first: Power's brown-face. This is respectful in comparison to other stuff from the time (AND later), and if you disagree, you have not seen enough old movies, my darlings. He plays the good doctor as a guy, that's it. No attempt at an accent, no stereotyped behavior (though Brent tells him to "be a man" when he cries as his girlfriend is dying from plague). He's friendly with friends, respectful to superiors (like Ouspenskaya's Maharana), and a quiet nationalist - he makes a point of not wanting the old Victorian days to make a comeback. Some of the other Indian characters don't fare as well, but you better take what you can get. In fact, you can see a worse version of this from about 15 years later, when it was called "The Rains of Ranchipur" (better title, much worse movie). If you're annoyed by Tyrone Power as an Indian, wait till you get a load of Richard Burton as an Indian. What makes him worse is that he's so plainly embarrassed to be doing the role. He just glares angrily at everything, including his love interest. Go look at the photos yourself, it's hilarious. And don't get me started on Lana Turner as a replacement for Myrna Loy. (Or Fred MacMurray in the George Brent role! Hahahahaha!) A pretty good role for Loy, who had transformed herself into a breezy and bright comedienne thanks to the "Thin Man" series. Wanting something meatier, she went back to the vamp style she started her career with, though this role is much more complicated than just a femme fatale-type. (In a bit of irony, given Power's presence here, she was often cast as an "Asiatic", an "exotic" temptress in her early career, despite her entirely British antecedents.) Well, whatever else you can say about it, it was nominated for 5 Oscars, and won one for Best Effects, this in a year in which "Gone with the Wind" and "Wizard of Oz" was released. I think it deserved its Oscar.

Okinoshima Island has been off limits to all but one elected priest since it was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2017. In the past, recruited members of the public were allowed to enter the island, but it will never again be open to the public.

What a great movie! The four leading actors, amazing in their own right... Esp. love Tyrone Power! Maria Ouspenskaya, the famous gypsy mother of Bela Lugosi's Werewolf, and Nigel Bruce of Sherlock Holmes fame, the quintessential Dr Watson, are two wonderful additions to the cast. Love this movie every time I see it! ❤

An actual Indian actor doing love scenes with Myrna Loy in 1939? Not in Hollywood's universe.

This is one of my favourite novels. I'm sure it's a good film also. But it doesn't even remotely live up to its depth and complexity. I don't like how they turned the women into mere love interests when they were such strong and developed characters with a great story arc. I guess Hollywood wasn't ready for that in 1939. Also why does the Maharani seem to have a speech impediment? It seems like she is just reading her lines.

Some fairly "adult" themes for the 30s. It's fun to see Myrna embodying feminine desire without pulling many punches; she seems quite comfortable in the part. Of course she has to pay for it in the end. 🙄 Unusual, too, for showing European colonialists serving an Indian queen--and Ouspenskaya is quite effective in the role.

The original episode included Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles during the walkabout 17 minutes in. Silence from muting here. Another posting of this episode covered the Beatles hit with Sugar Town by Nancy Sinatra.

In Shinto There are 3 gods or generals that preside over the earth each taking their turn for perhaps 1000 years. They are the sun god over Japan. The moon god over India and the Star god over America. The sun god has completed his turn and the star god of America is beginning his turn.

The earthquake scenes are terrifying! From 1939!! When I speak of the true artists of the industry I speak of those who did it without the aid of CGI. To get it on film they had to make it HAPPEN, not create it digitally. THIS IS ART in the finest sense of the word, made by masters of their craft. This is so much more than pretty faces and computer generated terror. Great cast, too. I thank those who bring these films to us! You keep a lot of shut-in folks very happily occupied soaking up all these awesome films of the past. I highly recommend this movie.

While looking this up on IMDb I came across Red One, a new holiday film. I fell down the rabbithole of it's clips. Looks like it should make comic book fans happy but please leave the littlest ones at home. Those monsters looked pretty monstrous. I'd watch to see for Bonnie Hunt again. Looked cute but with enough action and violence to keep dads awake. Ok. Back to a film made by the true artistes of the industry.

Wow! A great movie with beautiful, moving acting from the main characters to the minor ones! I don’t go to movies these days but I have to wonder if todays ‘actors’ are able to put so much pure heart into it as in this one. Actually part of the difference could be the talented writing of the stories and scripts have lost something… Appreciate you sharing this treasure with us.
