Can this Siemens be used as a radio receiver or only as a meter?
@Radiocose Жыл бұрын
In general, a selective level meter can detect and demodulate electrical signals like a receiver can do, but what is lacking in a selective level meter are some special features of a typical modern receiver, for example configurable AGC, noise filtering/blanking, band scan, squelch and tone control, etc. not to mention the advanced signal processing, recording and diplay functions of SDR receivers.
@AdamGeorge-pb3fm Жыл бұрын
@@Radiocose Thank you for your answer. Most of it is over my knowledge and I understand nothing. :) It is that such a meter is to sell from an ebayer I already bought some stuff and if I can use it as a primitive radio (well, I have enought commercial radio sets for the commercial shortwave, middlew. and long waves, but not for outside this bands) than I would add it to the package. No, I do not need fancy stuff like SDR, AGC, etc.
@Radiocose Жыл бұрын
@@AdamGeorge-pb3fm yes you can use a selective level meter as a receiver, especially for low frequency bands.

I don't know what it is, but there is something...intensely interesting...to me, listening in to those signals being intercepted out of the "ether" in real time. Because whatever it is that is on the other end, perhaps half a world away, you are listening to it real time, be it an actual person, music, or a recording.

Does the Tecsun have a movable antenna for MW? I don't think so. In any case, the quick test in the video was to enlight the superior AM performance of the old Panasonic, whatever be the reason (longer ferrite, different budget class, etc.). IMHO the Tecsun is a very good small portable on SW, but its MW performance is strongly limited by the background noise (worse than its predecessor PL-600).

For MW, the telescoping antenna doesn't add to perfomance. It's for short wave. The ferrite antenna does all the MW work.

Hello, sorry for my late reply. I bought it on eBay from a local vendor who declared it had been tested in many replacement operations. Yes it is a round belt. I suspect it is a ring seal actually, anyway it seems to work acceptably well, just enough for my purposes.

I agree. I had the PL-600 and it was less noisy on MW than PL-660. It was also a good, light companion for me even in hunting NDBs in LF (of course, no farther than european area).

@Radiocose5 жыл бұрын

Great video Radiocose, thanks! Was contemplating purchasing a PL-660, this video and some of the comments convinced me otherwise. I wanted a little smaller and lighter radio than my RF-2200. I did buy from Amazon the PL-880 a couple weeks back, it's Medium Wave AM reception was horrible, so I returned it. Was hoping the PL-660 was better. The RF-2200 is definitely the holy grail of MW sensitivity. I did like the PL-880's (and I would think the PL-660 would be similar) Shortwave and FM reception though, even with the telescopic antenna.

Ken Webb Hello Ken, please consider this is only a very quick and informal comparative test, even if it was made under pretty fair conditions, I think. More in general, yes there is some mysticism around some of those vintage radios IMHO (which reflects in sometimes unrealistic prices on a well known site of on-line auctions). But in the case of RF-2200 I think I can say it is a very good radio indeed, one that it is a real pleasure to operate and to listen to.
