The person speaking on the microphone is Denise P. Bowden, a member of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, which owns the ponies. The first foal to hit the Chincoteague shore is deemed King or Queen Neptune and is raffled off each year. The CVFC prints up 10,000 raffle tickets, and sells them at $1 each. This year, the lucky raffle winner took home foal #6, a chestnut pinto filly, out of Clara and sired by Thunderbolt. You hear helicopters overhead from TV stations WBOC and WAVY. The US Coast Guard determines slack tide, and shoots a flare to designate the beginning of the swim, so no ponies will be swept out to sea by the tide.

I wonder if anyone is keeping track of pedigrees, gelding and retiring males, and what new males come join the herd or inbreeding would result in genetic defects. Beautiful little ponies with quite the history.

Absolutely! The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company has some wonderful ambassadors that keep watch over the herds, keep track of bloodlines, etc. to help the fire company make decisions on which ponies should be buybacks, if mares or stallions should be moved into another herd, etc.

This is not odd behavior for island ponies. When they get to the other side, they get to eat VERY well and the auction maintains a healthy herd.

The Pony Swim with both the north and south herds is on Wednesday. After the Auction on Thursday, the adult north herd ponies are trailered back to their grazing grounds on Assateague Island. On Friday the remaining south herd ponies reverse the pony parade and swim back to their grazing grounds.

Not sure about the actual depth but the ponies are able to walk a ways out before they start to swim. This is not the only time the ponies swim. They quite often can be seen swimming to small tumps of land off the shore to enjoy fresh marsh grass.
