I have never seen your site before. It just luckily appeared on my feed. Your set and presence is lovely and very helpful. It might be helpful if you slowed the speed of your speech a bit. This is a very worthwhile channel to subscribe to. Your pedagogy is spot on and you are lovely!

Thanks for sharing what the fingers that aren't playing are supposed to be doing, especially the "outside" fingers. I admit I had a problem with that!

Hi, first I would like to congratulate you for your vídeos about the harp technique which are very clear and informative. Secondly, I would like to ask if you would not mind to make a video explaining how to make an expressive ligature' on the harp. I'm start leraning the harp by myself and I came across an exercise on Frojo's book of exercises for beginners that has a sequence of 2 note chords which have an expressive ligature on them, i.e. there is a C-E chord done with a 4-2 fingers followed by a D-F chord done with 3-1 fingers that have an expressive ligature uniting them, and the same happens to the other following chords in the ascending and descending mode, and I don't understand how to make them sound legato. The same applies when there are several individual notes with an expressive ligature above them across several bars. I think another good topic to be approched on one of yout next video would also be how to cleanly make pedal changes. Thank You for disposing from your time to make these very helpful and informative videos for beginners on the harp like me. Please keep posting.

Hi, thank you for your videos. They are well explained and informative specially for self taught persons like me on the harp. If you won't mind I would like to ask you to make a video about how to make 'expressive ligature' on the harp. I'm currently studying some execises from Frojo's book for beginners and there is one exercise which is about applying expressive ligature on every 2 note chord and I don't understand how to do it so they would sound legato, i.e. in this exercise there is a C-E chord done with 4-2 fingers which has an expressive ligature to a D-F chord done with 3-1 fingers and it goes on through the ascending and descending sequence. of 2 note chords. The same applies when we have a sequence of individual notes wchich goes on for several bars with an expressive ligature above them. I think this would be a good topic for you to approach on your next video and that would help us newbies to understand a little bit more about how to play correctly the harp. Another one good topijc to be also approached would be how to do cleanly harp pedal changes. I would like to Thank You for disposing from your time to make these very helpful videos to us newbies at harp and please keep posting.

Hello Mikaela, thank you for your great lessons. But i have a question: what is the diference between an arpeggio and a rolled chord? 🤔 Just the speed?
@mikaelabohannon6286
@mikaelabohannon6286 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dalangie! I’m so sorry for just now seeing this question. The difference is basically the speed. There is not an exact line between the two, but the general rule is rolled chords have less space between the notes and arpeggios have more.

Hi Mikaela! I’ve been try to learn harp on my own and have been watching MANY MANY different KZbin videos of people teaching harp techniques online Your videos are by far the most clear and concise and extremely helpful! You make learning the harp much less confusing and I so really appreciate it! I wish I had a great teacher in my area like you who I could take lessons from but just wanted to thank you for the clarity and professionalism of your videos!

Totally random question; I went to a jazz concert a couple of nights ago, and I saw that the harp has pedals?!? What do they do?
@mikaelabohannon6286
@mikaelabohannon6286 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon! That's a great question. The pedals on a harp are actually one of the features that sets it apart. They are what a harpist uses to do sharps and flats (kind of like a replacement for the black keys on a piano). There are seven pedals, each corresponding to a particular pitch (A, B, C, D, E, F, and G). When the pedal is in its middle slot, the corresponding pitch will be natural. When it is raised, the pitch will be flat, and when it is lowered, the pitch will be sharp. So in essence, every string on a harp is actually responsible for playing three different pitches, and how we move the pedals with our feet determines which pitch will be played! This does make for some unique challenges, but also some pretty cool possibilities as well (like being able to play glissandos that sound like a chord instead of just a scale). Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks Mikaela! That totally makes sense. I've played Guitar (casually) for a good part of my life, and I would imagine it's like bending a string with my finger, except you do it with your feet. Watching her play, it was like she was dancing on the pedals. Totally blew my mind! I have a new respect for harpists and what they do. I think a lot of folks are unaware of the work it takes to play the harp. Thank you again for the explanation, and keep up on the great videos!

@@brandonmiller5279 That's true! It is a lot like bending a guitar string. I've actually played a bit of guitar myself, (but nothing more than chords for singing around the campfire and such). If you ever get a chance to examine the action on a harp up close, you can see the disks rotate as the pedals are moved, bending the strings as they do. I'm so glad you've enjoyed the videos! I'll be putting some more out very soon.
