I was the last one. I was on the reduced/ free meal plan but my mom would give me a couple of dollars for like water or anything else. This was before reusable water bottles were popular and water was filtered. People didn't trust straight from the school tap because it was so old, unless you were really thirsty. Some people literally just went without during the school day. Also the teachers were selling waters to the students for the very same reason. There were 2 lines: the school lunch line and the canten/ beanary line where they served better food for a set price/ higher price than the school lunch. So I would get a water bottle and a cookie from the canteen ($1 total) and the free meal. But I would pocket the rest for Friday when they had chow mein for $5. So every friday, if I had the money, I faithfully bought chow mein, a cookie and a water. That was my personal luxury. And at times when the math didn't work (like I was absent or a break ended on Tuesday/ started on Friday) I'd save up for the next time.

Being able to buy food, like a buggy of groceries was a VERY big luxury that we'd need to make last for 3 months. To this day we're living paycheck to paycheck, in a house from the 70s that's damaged beyond repair inside, never jad a vehicle off the lot once just 3rd and 4th hand pre-owned that are 10+ years old, i know it's better then being homeless etc but come on! My family (myself included) is already getting fucked over with health issues physically and mentally! My dad who's 50 now still goes out everyday after work working on a mower, backhoe etc for a college doing grounds keeping from 6AM to 2PM then he goes back out all the way until 7PM sometimes to mow lawns etc just so we can get by. The worst part is my town is absolutely shit, highest taxes in the state for fuck all. The mayor is getting papd milluons and yet our city is broke? City of lights my ass!

Seems like most people here haven't seen the full story. It's so much worse than the short makes it out to be. There's some more to the beginning of the story where the idea is brought up, but that was a hard no for OP. A few months later the wife leaves with the Brother-In-Law and her family for a month to "attempt conception" everyday. She left a letter explaining what she was going to do and didn't take her phone or leave any way to contact her. Fake or not, that story was pretty enraging. Which is the point I suppose.
