I was wondering why Karchs passes were so low, after all he's a superb passer, probably one of the best who ever lived.... Then it hit me, lower passes, faster offense, with a lower pass he and his partner able to get the offense moving faster before their opponents have time to set, kinda like the hurry up offense in football.

Phil is amazingly nimble and skilled for a tall "goonish-type" player... That said, Karch at 23 would have been 8 inches higher at the moment of ball contact. Phil would have blocked him...almost never. ...Karch was a phenomenal all around athlete. Go watch his superstars competition. He was a freak.

Wrong. Phil would eat him alive even his 2020 run in Tokyo he was jumping with Qatar easily getting blocks i love me some Karch too but Phil was a different beast.

Saw Henry play with Rundle 3 or 4 times. Simple, he was that impressive. When he dug a ball that also was impressive.Do not recall him talking.SPECIAL he was!

Saw him play only once, at the Manhattan Beach Open in 73 with Larry Rundle. However, I HEARD him play a year earlier at the same tournament. My brother, who took me down to see the tournament, described Bergman as this amazing player and hitter. We arrived Sunday about 2pm and Bergman and Von Hagen were playing Malpee and Gonzalez. 46 years later, I still remember the details. The parking lot and pier were lined with people and I was unable to get any kind of a view, being 5 feet 4 at the time. But I vividly remember what I HEARD. One girl, with a view of the court, excitedly said, "OMG, they just served Bergman. I could hear the crowd started to stir, then I heard this LOUD CRACK, followed by a BOOM as the ball bounced off the sand. Then the reaction of the entire crown that went on for a good half a minute - shock and amazement. I wasn't able to get within a hundred yards of the court before the game ended with Henry and Ron victorious. The memories of that day still stick in my brain. The next year, we went down on a Saturday when the crowds were much smaller. We were there to see one team. This year, Henry played with Larry Rundle. I was looking forward to watching Henry hit warm-up spikes. We picked out a perfect place to see him hit from the left side. No such luck. He just hit balls into the net, with a LOUD crack each time. I could see why he didn't take warm- up hits. They played a younger team, early 20's I would guess. Good players with excellent ball control. Rundle saw every serve. Perfect pass EVERY TIME. You could have put a hula hoop by the net and every ball would have landed in it. And of course a perfect set every time. I started to see the look of disappointment on Bergman's face. And probably the slight look of boredom of setting the same perfect pass every time. Not one serve came his way. But he dug a ball on defense. Rundle gave him a perfect set and he crushed a ball hard angle and bounced it up into the parking lot. The two kids just looked at each other and shook their heads. i could see Henry looking across the net at them with a big smile. After the game, I wanted to see just how tall he was and how he was built. Right around six foot, lean and muscular. Not as tall as I was expecting. I must have had an look on my face of hero worship and awe. We made eye contact for a brief moment and I could see he was noticeably uncomfortable with my expression, like he didn't deserve it. I expected someone with a huge ego, not someone as shy and self conscious as this. The descriptions people on youtube give of this amazing athlete are all true. A down to earth humble human being who left us with a legacy of awe, amazement for his talent and respect and admiration for his warmth and character. He will be missed.

Phil and Todd in 2010 were insanely good. In my opinion, no team has even got close to their 2010 level since the change to short court. I was delighted to find this game. It's hard to find videos of their 2010 games.

Ugly, two guys like Mr. Rosenthal and Mr. Camacho should show more respect for those who, like themselves love volleyball enough to play tourneys. I've lost respect for Sean Rosenthal, Dana Camacho I don't know as well.
@bnop
@bnop 6 жыл бұрын
Bro, Camacho is 5 foot 9, and uses everything at his disposal to get an advantage, including the psychological game. Subtle trash talk is nothing new at the open level. Plus they are in pool play, so everyone calmly rallies, with minimal freakouts (none in these clips). Everyone knows his persona on the court could barely be called amicable, but that is his style, and people can love or hate it.
