I had a TM-4, loved it. Tomcar in Phoenix cares NOTHING about customer service. They want to sell NEW units, not support older units. I took my 4 seater to the factory on a trailer (9 hrs each way) and could not get anyone to even talk with me. I was prepared to spend thousands, just not tens of thousands. They are Israeli, that tells me something.

Any design engineer that designs automobiles should have to *_WORK ON THEM for 10 YEARS FIRST!!!_*

And ignore the naysayers hereabouts, the fact that you got this put together in 10 weeks in an attempt to solve a problem bought about by a stupid (though well intentioned) law change is pretty impressive. I think California has many more and much bigger problems they should deal with than small petrol engines. That law is ridiculous!

The sale of gas is banned but what about for government and essential industries??? I’d put my money on they buy out of state and use instate without problem. Also I’ve heard a whisper that if memory serves me correct, EGO or ECHO have a high end forestry saw made but with current battery tech it only runs for about 12 seconds.

Speaking as a climbing arborist, and having 23 years of experience, I have to say that what matters most for the cutter is chain speed and torque. Without enough of either you simply cannot control your cuts, meaning unpredictable behavior from the piece being let go. When operating over houses or in an urban environment in general, uncontrolled cuts are not allowed. The weight of the machine and its center of mass have a major role as well. Internal combustion power saws are a thing of beauty, with many decades of experience and engineering behind the design. This electric fad is interesting, I am enjoying seeing how people are attempting to solve the issues at hand, however it will be a very long time before I trust my life, the lives of my crews, and the property of my clientele to an electric saw.

the environmental regulators are out of control. they can't just say good enough. they have to make rules for everything,. in ny state they now regulate parts washers in all businesses .??? the emmissions from those are trivial but no they gotta do it. they have also banned gas appliances as well in new builds.

idiot legislators in california need to make exceptions for people like firefighters. but the law is an ass as they say. so if they can't cut down the trees in a forest fire more of them will burn and more acreage will burn. how is that good for the environment?

So, if I've got this correct, in California if you're fighting a forest fire that's emitting an enormous amount of pollution into the environment each second that it burns you can't use a chainsaw with a small gas motor to help stop the fire because the small engine pollutes the environment? Boy howdy! We're making progress now!

They simply used technology from old Soviet battery watches. The watch is small, light and comfortable. The battery is located on two railway wagons. still, could be worse. What is it that doesn't light up and doesn't fit in your ass? a Soviet device for lighting up the ass.

And to charge those batteries out in the forest, someone on the team will carry a generator. Bingo. Wonderful machine I'm sure it's great, kudos to the team for their effort. But these cutthroat, hack-down policies are the real problem. The politicians have probably never held a power tool in their own hands. They care about the green deals and have no real idea what their decisions do out in the field.

Ten weeks of thought is not enough time, go back to the drawing board. I've run power saws for 18 years, many of those years as a professional. I have run the small battery operated Husqvarna saws all the way up to Stihl 880's. I have also run a 20v DeWalt and was thoroughly unimpressed. Battery operated saws have their place in some home owner uses and even in some professional tree service uses, where the cutting is more "occasional." A decent battery (like the Husqvarna) powering a narrow chain on a short bar will last about half a day in this type of usage setting, cutting limbs and even bucking small "logs." Like 1-3 cuts every 15 minutes. A handful of disposable tool batteries running a 3/8 or .404 chain on a 4 foot bar will most likely not last much time at all. That's probably the reason that you failed to demonstrate the saw you created making one single cut with that huge bar and chain setup. It can't do it for any reasonable amount of time, if at all. I didn't even see it spin the chain in the air! Can it even do that? A battery operated saw will always fail miserably trying to keep up with a gas powered saw when it comes to the near constant cutting that occurs in other homeowner use and professional settings. Spending a day in the woods running 8+ tanks of fuel through a power saw will never be outdone by a battery powered saw. Most especially considering that with the recent advent of fuel injected power saws like the Stihl 500i, the mark that battery operated saws have to match or beat has now moved considerably. So this video was basically a demonstration of how someone can make their own crappy disposable battery operated saw just like a DeWalt or Makita and it can use up to 6 batteries to run it. But there's no point in using all 6 batteries, when instead, a person could either use their much better suited gas powered saw, or they could use one of the battery manufacturers' saws and it only uses one battery at a time. The big bar and chain on this battery powered franken-saw is pure click-bait. You are better off marketing this to the type of people that buy "wood sharks" and "wild things." Attempting to market this to firefighters, thinners, and loggers will only continue to get you laughed out of the room. California's only solution to banning gas powered saws will be burning up even more than they already have until there's nothing left to burn.

It looks like ten weeks of thought went into this…who is going to buy, charge and then carry up to six Milwaukee batteries? What do you do out in the woods when your batteries are dead after 15 short minutes? Someone above suggested a backpack setup for the batteries. It’s a great start to making this somewhat usable. How are you going to charge the batteries away from home in a timely manner? The cost of gas vs just buying the batteries isn’t even a comparison.

I'm all for green tech, but... Small portable tools like chainsaws are going to be real hard to compete with, as a production cutter, you simply can't pack enough batteries to finish the day, when you burn 2-3 galons of fuel in 6 hours, battery tech just isn't ever going to be up to it, but also, small engines are a drop in the pollution bucket, heavy industry by far produces more then a few 1000 chainsaws

love it! Have you considered tethered batteries that you would carry around your waist/backpack? That would remove the weight of the chainsaw entirely from your arms. It would imagine it would have to have a quick disconnect as well (magnetic would be cool). But since you already have a wall-plug option, wouldn't that be a "relatively" quick mod? The scalability of this is fantastic--more batteries, more power. I think this feature has been intentionally left out of electronic devices to force people to pay for entirely new units when they want a bit more power. Anyone who builds chainsaws = permanent man card membership.

Nice project, good job, but the whole premise is ludicrous. You're putting out a wildfire that's producing way more emissions than any number of chain saws. Oh wait... it's California - doesn't have to make sense.

This is a great idea, im an arborist/ restoration tech and currently the electric saws dont hold up for the amount of time i need to be cutting in a day, and i cant afford to have 8 batteries and constantly charging when in a remote location. Need to consider that a firefighter might be hiking up to over 20 miles or so each day so 30lbs isn't great. If you cant reduce the weight then consider some sort of transport modular carry pack to accommodate all the batteries and the powerhead.

as an arborist I commend you but the sooner you figure out that weight problem the better. something that runs just as good as an 880 but weighs 5x-10x as much is not really marketable for people in the industry. Milwaukee's new line of electric chainsaws are impressive but still weigh too much compared to their gas alternative. I'm not trying to be too critical cause what you guys have accomplished is remarkable. I'm just saying if you can figure out how to minimize that weight and maintain that power you have a billion dollar idea.

My Tomcar TX2 is ancient... but still takes me where I want to go and back. Speedometer doesn't work anymore but they are easy to field repair and are tough as hell. I live in Arizona so think MOAB and the Centipede. I think mine is on the 2nd Kohler engine now with 100K+ miles on it. I was used as a rental in Sedona for 10+ years, 8 hour days 6 days per week with no breaks. Runs like a tank.

Did you swap the rear diff out for the OEM one available from CanAm?
