You're wrong that the conversations have nothing to do with the characters.

Always worth listening to a guy who has been there, done that. The music doesn't matter. Personal stories help to get in his head, as much as one can.

This was so well made, it literally made me cry. I'm watching this Steven Spielberg documentary/life's work overview today for the first time, at a point in my life when, after 10 years of trying to make it in Hollywood as a director and 20 years of filmmaking experience, I gave up and moved to Seattle, WA to pursue a music career. I was unable to break into Hollywood as a director or actor, so I've been living in Seattle for 2 years. Yesterday, I got a call from a casting director to act in a movie shooting in Washington, and I also received a call from an Assistant Director and Producer in LA who may want to finance my next feature film. For so many years, I tried to achieve my dreams, but it just wasn't possible for me. Hearing Steven talk about all the years of practice he had before being hired to direct his first film really hit my heart. Like Steven, I've been practicing my craft of filmmaking for so long (20 years), and I am now reinspired to pursue this dream again with new life. I died to my dream and have been born again as a new director, actor, screenwriter, producer, and music artist.

He talks more about his life and experiences rather than give any useful advice. No disrespect, but this is not helpful at all for someone how wants to start writing.

I wrote Rivals a Romeo & Juliet - zootopia Football movie. It will be #1 given the opportunity. All the athletes go into beast mode straight forward with Morse code. I will not rest easy until it's sold. God allows us to get old now I must obey. Do as I am Told!

The same goes for Tenet and Memento, even Oppenheimer. The first rewatch you can pick up and follow the mechanics of what is going on better. But it's not until later rewatchings that you pick up on other deeper themes and subtle things occurring within the supporting characters storylines.

Gosh, I LOVE a YT that gets me pumped up! I'm not the jump up and dance kinda guy. No, serious. Jumping up and down because I was excited was thirty years ago. That doesn't mean the passion isn't there, it's redirected. Sometimes screaming "I love you" as I whiz by someone going fast the wrong way on a one way street. Shut up! I've never hit anyone yet and the reactions from people are worth writing down. It's not that easy to get people to react fast, blurt out what their first thought is and will share with you what they look like in a fetal position, which few dare to show. That's the type of dialogue and character action that is hard for me to write myself. I'm a Stone Pacifist. My Scandinavian side of the family considers raising their eyebrows as harsh words. I need dialogue for people's reaction after the subway just came down on the back end of their car, what would be the reaction? Probably like a car barreling at them, donchathink? I'd write more, but I feel a trip to the mall and stir up a group of shoppers. Macys is good for that. Thank you for this wonderful step into the thinking of Sorkin! Great stuff!!💋

It's from the script and the opening scene is very different in the original script. Right here, it's showing Mr. Pink but it's Mr. Brown who ended up saying it. The next dialogue after that is from Mr. Blue but it's Mr. Blonde who ended up saying it in the movie. And that whole thing about tipping the waitress? It wasn't Mr. Pink who didn't believe in tipping, but instead it was Mr. White.

Melodrama gets hated on by the self-serious folk today who think they’re being more “complicated” by being subtle. Melodrama has wonderful qualities if done right and actually enhances the emotional investment into a story

Writing a lot will put you in the practice and give you the ability to finish writing. Reading a lot will give you a direction in style and general idea of how story works. This is also true for anything else in life. If you want to play music, if you want to be a plummer, if you're playing a sport. Lots of practice, and lots of learning from those that came before you.

I came here to say something similar! I'm an actor (and by actor I mean that outside of a few productions I did with the American Conservatory Theatre on San Franaisco, I'm a junior college theatre type actor by night who has a regular, pay-the-bills type of job during the day, but I digress) and when I was in high school (I went to one of those artsy fartsy types of schools) and in my theatre arts class, our teacher emphasized to us to many times that if we were serious about becoming actors in live theatre then it was just as important that we go see live theatre as much as practicing actng and performing was. But I like how you broadened that notion by extending it to every profession and/or craft.
