Hello, my father has been on hydroxycarbimide for 10 years for his essential thrombocytopenia and has had cancer twice in his mouth in the past 2 years. I'm concerned ut's the hydroxycarbamide that has caused this because on the box it states 'toxic, handle with gloves'. Is there a known correlation between hydroxycarbamide and increased risk of cancer.

There is an increased risk of secondary cancer with all MPNs, This is not a toxic drug to handle - pharmacies should not put those labels on the drug. However, some people do develop sensitivities to the drug and it is not uncommon to hear of skin cancers, etc developing. There are few alternatives for ET right now, but there are some CALr vaccines in trial that are showing promise.

How do you know if pv is progressing
@joann7570 Жыл бұрын
If you’re symptoms are increasing - fatigue, pruritus, bone pain, and your red cell indicators are falling, esp hemoglobin, you should be suspicious and get a bone marrow biopsy to see if there is any progression.

I was diagnosed with essential thrombocytopenia aprox 15 years ago after tests and bone marrow biopsy. Put on hydroxycarbamide my platelets have never come down. 2 months ago different doctor more tests another bone marrow biopsy. 2weeks ago telephone call told to stop taking the hydroxycarbamide. I asked did I still have essential thrombocytopenia I was told probably. So now after stopping hydroxycarbamide after 15 years I feel awful fatigue night sweats and I just feel heavy I can't explain it I feel heavy when I walk anyone understand ?

How are you now? I was diagnosed 6 months ago after complaining of weakness and leg cramps. I know exactly what you are talking about; the heaviness is very debilitating. No one understands what I am talking about, not even doctors. I try to explain it as feeling like if I were a car, I would be driving with my brake on. I am taking hydroxyurea and am not sure that it helps but it has lowered platelets somewhat. I still feel kinda lousy most days. Some days I feel almost normal.

No, it doesn't make sense. You should ask for a new bone marrow biopsy and an explanation on your current status. If you are not with an MPN specialist, I recommend you find one, and review your case and care with them. The symptoms you describe are typical of MPNs, but the sudden onset is concerning, and probably due to your stopping therapy and not replacing it with something else. Hello. I enjoyed the vid a lot. I've been trying to research for an educational video similar to yours that breaks down the topics in this KZbin vid! 🧑🏻⚕️ The part at 1:18 is my fav. Your video actually is like the content of Dr. Ethan. Ethan's explanations are really informative and I actually learned a lot for my exams! He is an insightful medical student in Nottingham and he talks about vaccines! You should watch his page out and give the doc a like here! ➡️ #DoctorEthanNHS
