What did you do to remove the adhesive on the doors? I just picked up 3 doors to replace mine, and my Astro does not have the plastics. I want to get rid of the pieces on the doors. One is already gone from the drivers door and there’s tons of adhesive still there. The pieces are still attached on the passenger door and slider. Thanks for making the video. All of us Astro Van fanatics thank you 🙏

Haven't dropped the motor into them yet, but they are fitted and bolted. (This weekend) And yep, had to grind off about half of that resting tab. However, my clam shells are a bit different and are a perfect fit, so no trimming of the bushings was required. Great vid, Thx!

Thanks. just got my van about 3 months ago 98 GMC with 160k miles. I have those on mine MN van. The rockers are rusted fairly bad. The drivers door piece fell off! I'm afraid if i pull those off it's going to be a nightmare under but i will need to. I kinda like the plastic bumper panels but after i pull them off ill debate on what to do. I'll look around but do you know if there prefab rocker panels you can buy or do i go to a junkyard and try to find some cut them out and weld them on?
@MKEL_13272 жыл бұрын
google search Astro rocker panels .. I know I've seen them for sale .. can't tell you where or if they are a perfect fit. Good luck with your project.

Hey Mkel, where did you get those small plastic trim pieces to cover up the gap just behind the front two tires that exists after removing all the OEM trim?
@MKEL_13272 жыл бұрын
Those are standard on cargo vans... Search the junk yards ... If they are cracked there is a lot of void space on the back side for a epoxy repair.

@MKEL_13272 жыл бұрын
I can't say I am 100% happy with them .. they are tough and shouldn't break down like the poor quality rubber ones everyone sells... but they do transfer a lot of vibration at idle and reverse... once you are going they are fine.
@oby-16072 жыл бұрын
You say the temperature probe acts as the ground for the circuit to complete then powering the fans. Wouldn't you want the temperature probe/sensor to trigger another relay to complete to ground. That way you don't overheat or overload the sensor. These things happen over time much like how extension cords cause fires if overloaded.
@MKEL_13272 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could do that .. I picked my fans for the lowest amp load I could find .. with that said, If the sensor was before the load it might be a problem but as a ground it's fine. Been running it for years... Adding another relay seems like just another electronic part to fail .. I had a few sensors lying around so I do keep a second one in my emergency parts box on the rig. I carry a lot of parts for this old rig. Have a great day !

Let me add my voice to the crowd here…. Very insightful mods and thankyou for sharing. Am wondering about the shock absorber mod … what it is and what gains to be had. Have viewed some of your other vids and it seems your rear end spring attachment has changed also from the original clamshells to something else… perhaps owing to the lift? And again, thankyou for sharing.
@toddbridges74302 жыл бұрын
Hey there. I notice your whole clam shell spring attachment setup is gone. Is that due to the lift kit? I don’t see the lift kit install in your video lineup.
@MKEL_13272 жыл бұрын
no .. I didn't do a install video for the lift kit .. there is a lot of info on them out there.. the lift kit doesn't mess with the clam shell.. I had another issue and finally decided to eliminate the clam shell and go to U bolts... I guess I should do a video explaining the issue and how to do this but \i don't have time right now.

Thx much. Did you paint front and back fenders black? Mine is 2002 astro LT. it has all the moldings you do but I also have running boards and it's all same color including bumpers in gold. I know you don't have the running/step boards and my side molding isn't attached under van cuz the running boards are but the bumpers are more my question ❓ thx for any help
@MKEL_13273 жыл бұрын
I have not painted the fenders black .. thought about painting the lower part a different color but I don't have anywhere to paint without dirt and bugs getting into it. I think removing the running boards and panels is a smart move however, it is a lot of work and if you have no rust and like them leave it alone.

Hi there, lots done already to her, look forward to watching the progress. Could you please explain the reason for the Dexcool delete, and the Corvette trans servo mods? I like/understand the reason for the electronic fans, clever relay system. 👍 Edit: Just read the comments for the Corvette servo, interesting.
@MKEL_13273 жыл бұрын
dexcool is horrible stuff.. if it leaks into your engine it will ruin it... if someone adds the wrong antifreeze to it you will end up with a jello consistency totally clogged up system. If you remove it you MUST flush everything real well including the heater system... you do not want even a drop of Dexcool left in there when you go to regular green antifreeze. Then you want to label it as never getting Dexcool or some oil change shop might pour some in to top it off... that would be bad. The corvette servo just improves the shifting a bit...

@@MKEL_1327 Appreciate the info. I'm in Ireland and have always used Prestone pre-mixed in my cars (I6/EJ25/EJ20/B16) so will probably continue. Will probably do a ChrisFix super flush on the next one.

What electric fans and shroud did u install. Any links or part numbers? Looking to do the same on my safari
@MKEL_13273 жыл бұрын
My shroud was a mistake by a fabricator and I modified it to work on my van... the fans were generic and I made them fit... I did this a long time ago and really can't help you with links ... with these vans you kind of need to be able to fabricate stuff because nobody really makes things to exact fit. Ebay is your best bet for items to do this.
@aheadatime3 жыл бұрын
Nice job. After you removed the body trim, there was an awkward gap at the bottom of the fender and the bottom of the door. In later pics, this gap seems filled. Did you just bondo the area with alot of sanding?

Did you noise less lag during acceleration? Did you need to upgrade the alternator?
@MKEL_13273 жыл бұрын
I did this a long time ago and really do not remember it it made any change in acceleration... maybe but I rather doubt it... Did not upgrade alternator but it is in my plans for the near future. For me the best reason to do electric fans is to gain access to the engine. It is so nice not having that giant shroud there.

@MKEL_13273 жыл бұрын
I just put up a "Hack" video showing the one rusted piece I still have. My opinion -- take it for what it's worth -- I do not think making it out of aluminum is a good idea... especially if you live where there is salt on the roads. Once the salt gets on them you will get natural electrolysis causing the steel to corrode even faster. I'd try plastic or even wood.
