I certainly think physical rulebooks should always be included but I think digital rulebooks have potential to be better. At the moment all you get is a pdf of the physical rulebook but they could take advantage of other formats. I think a link to a rules website that includes links/menus, example animations and formatted for mobile devices would be a much better experience than a pdf and potential better than a physical rulebook. Could also be kept up to date with various errata etc. A similar example is with lego instruction books. Digital versions have been available for a long time but simply pdf of physical but an app now exists with instructions with animations, highlights and 3d interactivity that couldn't be done physically that actually make the digital instructions a good option.

The thing that separates board games from the digital world is the tangibility. First thing I do when I get a board game is go curl up with the rule book. It's the same difference to me, between reading an actual book and reading a digital book. It loses its charm through screen glare and glass. I think a printed version should always be included but there should always be access to PDF rules if the physical copy goes missing or gets worn out/damaged.

Enjoyed watching the vid! A cheap/easy-to-produce game (e.g. PnP) for project 1 is a great idea. 🙂 I strongly disagree with TTS. I don't think designers need to use TTS. The mechanical/thematic dichotomy really bothers me. I agree that it's important to prioritise something, but that doesn't need to be within either of those two spaces. I like the idea of 'fixing' or remaking something you hate as a starting point if someone's looking for inspiration. Agree that you need to be willing to kill 'darlings' - it's about having those priorities and getting rid of anything that stands in that way. Scythe is a really weird mention for point 6. I agree you need to be willing for your projects (whether your first or your 25th) to be a failure though. We keep on learning and keep moving forwards. 🙂 All the best with your stuff!

it's insane to me...INSANE...that the #1 factor in using dice: BEING ABLE TO SEE THE NUMBERS...seems to not be the highest priority in the design process. I appreciate the review. While NO dice are worth $150 to me, it's especially off-putting for me that the numbers are difficult to read. Ridiculous!!!

My least favourite isn't a single mechanism, but a flawed execution; when the mitigation for a problem ends up being a victim of the exact problem it's supposed to solve An example would be Star Realms where cards that allow you to unclog the market must be randomly shown by the market itself, so it they won't show up due to the cloggy market, yeah have fun buying unwanted cards and diluting your deck, while your opponent possibly buys something better you revealed for them... Another case is Ark Nova: with such a big and diluted deck, the chance of drawing duds is obviously high. Yet unlike in Race for the Galaxy and TMAE, in order to convert those duds for money, you need Sunbathing, which is a card effect so... you need a good draw to mitigate bad draws🤦🏼🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏽‍♀️
