It's a result of poor Game Gear to Master System conversion. Everything that looks normal is the part that would be displayed on a Game Gear's resolution, while everything else ends up getting garbled. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmndiKaLd86ihas The video I just linked shows what the game normally looks like on Master System. This video is a GG2SMS conversion, hence the title of 'Daffy Duck in Hollywood GG.' Frankly I have no clue why anyone would make a GG2SMS conversion of this game when an official conversion already existed, but I'm not familiar enough with the level design or general workings to know if they're significantly different works.

This game is actually an original game gear. Those tiles are just garbage, as the game gear had less resolution than the master system. So the master system here is displaying memory areas that were not supposed to contain any screen content.

Who are you to tell people what kind of game to make? If they think that they can make an RPG out of Fist of the North Star, there’s nothing wrong with that. The developers probably chose that direction to focus more on the story and characters. Besides, the first games in the series were side-scrolling action games while the remainder of the SNES titles were fighting games, so the developers were most likely trying to do something different. Judge the game for what it is, not what you wanted it to be. Not to mention, saying that “This just looks like a ripoff of A Link to the Past with turned based 1v1 fights” doesn’t hold a lot of water, as that game and Final Fantasy II had been released about a year before this one, showing that RPGs were one of the SNES’s strong suits with developers following suit, whereas Street Fighter II, which popularized the fighting genre, was launched just a month before Hokuto no Ken 5. Even the first Dragon Ball Z game on the Super Famicom was an RPG before the series transitioned into fighting.

We already have several Hokuto no Ken fighting games. Two snes fighting games were released after this one, (which had good graphics, background and character sprites, but honestly an awful gameplay) and there's an excellent one for the arcade, PS2 and Dreamcast. I really wanted to see what an HNK RPG would be like, but one that would be faithful to the anime. Unlike this game, where we play as a protagonist who isn't even Kenshiro and in a story that has nothing to do with the original anime and manga. I really hope that one day we will get a good and faithful to the original Hokuto no Ken RPG game.
