Numbers are different from letters. Then at some time in the distant past, people started to think about numbers whose values were not yet known. How do you write down a number when you don't know its value...? You give it a simple name first, then use that name in equations to help determine the value of your number... The easiest name for something is a single letter, be it A, B, C, or X, Y, Z...

It's funny how the symbol used for "Approximately Equal To ≅" in engineering is the same as the symbol used for "Congruent ≅" in geometry... Congruent geometric figures have the same geometric form, meaning that if Figure 'A' can be transformed into Figure 'B' using simple translation, rotation, and reflection, then Figure 'A' is CONGRUENT to Figure 'B'. When you require a "dilation" transform, then you are either expanding or shrinking the Figure, so the best you can do is have two "Similar" Figures, each with a different "Size"... This is a great lesson to highlight the importance of a standardised and precisely defined nomenclature for all of mathematics. Learning all of the technical terminology may seem tedious and arcane, at first, but when you discover something important, then you need a way to communicate your discovery to the rest of the world. The precise and universal language of mathematics allows you to do exactly that, and thus you can communicate with 100% fidelity.
