@DamagedJusticeNLD I think I read somewhere he used an old Bf-2 flanger. But the only photo evidence of that I could find was a pic of his pedalboard in the late 90s during his Sadowsky era. You probably know the one. I imagine if it's not that it might've been an old CH-1 chorus or one similar. The wet/dry blend during his Misery solos seemed to fluctuate between shows from what I've seen on YT. Your SII Europa sounds VERY close to his from what I can hear from my phone speakers turned down in the break room at my work. Just sayin, it would be cool as hell if you did a cover of his Misery solo with it on here! Loving the killer downpicking series so far!

@@lowendfloridiancraka Thanx! I have a Lexicon multi effects unit in my rack, but the chorus sounds nothing like Newsteds tone. I think you're right about the Boss units, must check them out (I had a BF-2 in the 80's, indeed pretty sure that was not his chorus sound) Check this vid for some amazing looks behind the scenes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXOcZamHmqZpi7M (starts at 19:15)

@DamagedJusticeNLD I bought an '85 BF-2 off Reverb last year and I can get a very similar chorusy effect to what he used, though my Peavey- even with it's dual LPF Underhill preamp w/ dual CVQs can hardly match the tone of a real Series II lol. And in reference to the link you posted, I have that video saved on one of my playlists! That way I can always go back to it to where Jason's backline manager discusses his signal chain to refresh my memory lol. Just gotta tolerate him saying "kids" every 5th word lol

What position is your pickup selector in for this? I can never tell if Jason was using the neck pickup, bridge pickup, or both. Inquiring minds need to know! 😅
@DamagedJusticeNLDАй бұрын
I'm pretty sure these are the same as Newsteds live settings: Both pickups 100%, both Filters 100%, CVQ at about 15% Btw: Newsted used a "stereo" system with a Soundcraft 200B mixer, see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXOcZamHmqZpi7Mfeature=shared&t=1267 (starts at 21:07)

Reasons why Jason Fuckin Newsted was the best bassist of Metallica
@peachmelba100010 күн бұрын
Not by a long shot. Cliff was a far better musician in his early 20s than Jason has ever been. Newsted, the band, is boring af. He's capable, but he's not a genius on the instrument as Cliff was.

Did you end up getting the "Almost black" or "sheer black" finish? I saw Newsted's 10 string on the Reverb video and if you look real close you can see the flamed maple or it could of just been the reflection of the floor. I just think Alembic's "Almost black" finish has changed over the years, it became like a brown then a see thru purple from the customs I have seen come out with that finish. I want to order a series Newsted Alembic but I want the correct finish not the "new versions".

I have been playing bass for about 30 years now, and I can honestly say that is hands-down the best sounding bass I have ever heard. I can find no faults in it - it is PERFECT. The neck-through construction really brings out the huge fundamental in each note. The SII electronics look a little complex, but they sure do deliver! INCREDIBLE!
@Alex-nm7qx2 ай бұрын
This may seem like a strange question, but what type and gauge of pick are you using, also what are those strings? Are they tape wound - they look black. Thanks!
@DamagedJusticeNLD2 ай бұрын
We use the 1.14mm GrippX picks from InTune, strings are DR Black beauties :-)
@Alex-nm7qx2 ай бұрын
@@DamagedJusticeNLD THANKS! I'm going to give both of those a try. The reason I asked about the pick is because you seem to get a real nice attack on the note without thinning out the sound like a lot of other pick players - your sound is still thick and meaty. Sometimes using a pick can take that away, but you don't seem to have that problem. Thanks again for the reply.

@DamagedJusticeNLD6 ай бұрын
Only Alembic can make 'em like this :-) This one is not for sale, but there is a four string (spoiler shaped) sibling out there, (they made two basses for me, but I had to sell the 4 string) If you want one like this, I think you'll have to order one from them. (I've only seen 3 of these and two of them belong to Newsted) Series II Europa 5's with natural wood finish are a bit more common, watch the Alembic club (on the Alembic site) or reverb/Ebay,

Youre basically the older, richer, (and way cooler) version of my 27yo self that can afford to have close replicas made of Jason's black Europas & Spoilers from that era. Jason's tone with those SII Alembics is one I've been chasing forever it feels like. Ive managed to modify my neck thru Peavey Grind 5 with a dual LPF preamp with CVQs for each and its now a monster bass, but even with the Fishman Fluence pickups & the filter preamp, it still doesnt quite nail thst clear growly tone Jason got. Were you playing with both pickups turned on?

I believe one of the reason Jason stopped using Alembics were the weight. He said that the 5 string Sadowsky was lighter than the 4 string alembic which made a huge difference during and after a 3 hrs show.. Shame cuz alembic has a really unique and distinctive sound he just could not get with the Spector and Sadowsky basses!! He still fukken rules tho!!!!!
