This was last weekend, and we’d had a storm on the previous Thursday, so the snow was holding up quite well. For this coming weekend? We just had that storm yesterday, Wednesday, dunno how much snow they got at Snowbasin, but I’d think this weekend will be decent. But, supposed to be super windy today, and it’s supposed to get really warm by the weekend, so you can probably expect typical spring conditions. Which will still be pretty good, because this is a fantastic mountain.

@ski-lift-channel
@ski-lift-channel 3 ай бұрын
It has pretty much all you could ask for- very large, all sorts of terrain with steeps and cruisers and tree runs (trees are quite tight in many places, though). I was there on probably the busiest weekend of the year, on a bluebird day no less, so it was super crowded with long lift lines everywhere. But, they have a couple gigantic free parking lots with the best free shuttle bus system to/from those lots that I’ve seen at any mountain, and was only like 12 minutes away from my cheap hotel in Silverthorne. Three main base lodges/areas with a few more spread throughout the mountain. Biggest downside is that more than a couple of their chairs are old style fixed, non-detachable, and are sslllllooooow. Would be nice to get some speedier chairs in place. But, as far as the mountain goes, it’s on equal footing as the others in the area- A-Basin, Keystone, Breck.

@@ananya4040 The mountains are comparable. I like both of them a lot. But, I think the decision depends on where you plan to stay. Winter Park is just over an hour off the I-70, but is really close to Boulder, like 30 or 35 minutes I think? Copper is right on the 70, right in the middle of the action, only minutes from Frisco and Dillon and Silverthorne, so if you’re staying up there, Copper is the place. If you’re staying in Denver, I’d think Winter Park is easier to get to, but not sure.

There's no "Express" in the names of the Center and East Village high speed lifts. This is just called Super Bee. Same is the case for Excelerator, American Eagle, and the American Flyer.

Ah, ok, I’ll fix ‘em. Copper seems to be in the minority as it still has a whole bunch of fixed lifts, many doubles and a triple I think. So I just assumed that all their detachable lifts were ‘expresses’.

This is one of those rare Leitner-Poma chairlifts to have monster combi sheave assemblies like this lift has on the uphill line with eight support sheaves and four hold-down sheaves. I can only think of a few other lifts that are like that, like the BreckConnect Gondola's combis, tower 6 on the Beaver Run SuperChair, and a few instances on Doppelmayr high speed quads like Plunge and Northern Spirit. These days, LPA lifts generally get built with 4S4C sheaves for combi assemblies with heavier loads, and 4S2C assemblies for more gradual changes in line profile. The top part of the lift also reminds me a lot of the Kensho SuperChair that Breck built several years later as part of the Peak 6 expansion, although Kensho has a much steeper ascent on the above timberline portion.

@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 If it were my decision, I'd upgrade Porcupine first- busier part of the mountain, longer lift. Becker is more in the beginner's section of the mountain, though, so their rationale probably is to serve those skiers before replacing Porcupine for the more advanced skiers who are already taking John Paul Express or the gondola to get to the same terrain that Porcupine accesses.

@@ski-lift-channel I mean, I saw what it was like in your video of John Paul. I imagine the conditions on John Paul were also what it was like on Porky, Middle Bowl, Strawberry, and maybe Wildcat. Speaking of Strawberry, I'm kinda curious how lines at the gondola are now that the DeMoisy Express is the main lift in the basin. (I feel like the only reason to use the gondola now is if you want to hit the upper part of Elk Ridge, or Sisters Bowl, or the chutes on upper DeMoisy Peak.)
@ski-lift-channel
@ski-lift-channel 4 ай бұрын
@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 Yes, what you say is 100% correct- there’s not much motivation to take the gondola except to get to those upper reaches of that part of the mountain, and it’s only gonna be worth it if the conditions are really good. Conditions certainly weren’t ideal this day with the limited visibility with all the fog at the top. And honestly, I haven’t even taken the gondola yet this season, but next time I hit Snowbasin, I’ll check it out.

@ski-lift-channel The fact that you no longer have to take your gear off after each run is another point in DeMoisy's favor. Though that likely wasn't high on Snowbasin's main reasons for building it. Having a high capacity lift that can supplement the gondola (the lift has 2800pph capacity, which is actually greater than both of Snowbasin's gondolas) and run in conditions the gondola can't were the main reasons (since now they can be more proactive in opening Strawberry Basin).

All the runs under this lift are labelled double black, but the run just about right under the lift, slightly to looker’s left, which you can see clearly in this video, called Main Street, is way more like single black, so that’s the way to go if you want to avoid the super serious stuff.

Did you know that this was one of the last detachables with Leitner-Poma Omega terminals and grips ever built as it was built in 2010, and in that same year, Leitner-Poma built their first LPA terminals and grips on the High Noon Express at Vail, and they've only been using the LPA terminals and grips ever since, as the Omega grips and terminals have been phased out the following year.
