Sidi Bou Said, a charming Tunisian town located about 20 kilometers from Tunis and historically linked to the ancient site of Carthage, is home to a beautifully preserved old family residence that once belonged to the Tunisian bourgeoisie. This town is celebrated for its rich cultural traditions, including its marabout, vibrant ceremonies, and festivals. Its use of Malouf, a genre of classical Tunisian music, enhances its reputation as a cultural treasure both locally and nationally. With its pleasant climate, Sidi Bou Said also captivates visitors with its iconic whitewashed homes adorned with intricate moucharabies and vivid blue shutters. Renowned cafes like the Café des Nattes and Café Sidi Chaabane offer visitors a delightful way to experience the town's unique charm.

What do they do when it rain 🌧️
@UCWHATISAW2 ай бұрын
When it rains in Matmata, the underground Berber homes face a significant challenge. While the troglodyte dwellings are excellent at protecting against extreme heat and cold, heavy rainfall can pose a threat. The homes are dug into soft limestone, and without proper drainage systems, water can seep into the structures. The roofs of these dwellings are typically made of a mixture of earth, straw, and sometimes wood, which, while effective at insulating, can become vulnerable when exposed to prolonged wet conditions. To prevent flooding and structural damage, many of the inhabitants of Matmata have built drainage channels around their homes. These channels help direct water away from the central courtyards and living spaces. Additionally, the earth's natural ability to absorb water is helpful, but in cases of heavy rainfall, families may need to repair the roofs or reinforce walls that have become weakened by moisture. Though rain is relatively infrequent in the desert environment of Matmata, when it does occur, the community must be prepared to mitigate its impact. This resilience, combined with traditional building techniques, has allowed the troglodyte dwellings to withstand centuries of environmental challenges.

In Tunisia’s desert, settlements like Matmata boast remarkable underground dwellings designed to shield residents from the scorching heat and fierce winds. These homes are crafted by digging deep pits-about 7 meters (23 feet) down and 10 meters (33 feet) wide-and then carving tunnels and cave-like rooms into the surrounding earth. Built into a layer of soft sandstone, these unique structures are easy to dig with basic tools but resilient enough to endure for generations. Matmata, along with a few other towns across Tunisia, stands as a testament to this centuries-old, practical architectural tradition.

Takrouna also known as Ta Kurunna, is a small village located in Tunisia's Sahel region. It sits atop a hill about 200 meters above sea level, offering views of the Gulf of Hammamet, Hergla, and Sousse to the east, Djebel Zaghouan to the north, and the Kairouan plain to the south. The name Takrouna is thought to trace back to a tribe that migrated to Andalusia in the 8th century. After the expulsion of the Moors, their descendant😊

One of Tunisia's top adventures is the drive to the summit of Djebel Zaghouan, located in central Tunisia. The drive through the treacherous terrain is a real challenge, testing your nerves but the stunning views of the surrounding mountains make it all worthwhile.
