Feels like we missed the key moment of Mickey and the Beanstalk. And what is this paranoia about male hero sickness? What's that all about? Then there's there's the anally exploited ALBATROSS... bit too much focus on THAT, methinks...

I know this is a bit old but it just showed up in my feed right after a little smoke 🥣,💨. This was great. The horror genre always gets a bad rap. Take Toni Collette for example. I know the Oscars are lame but it'd be nice to see her get some kind of recognition. I mean c'mon her in Hereditary? She was brilliant. Nice to hear the genre's coming into its own in 2023/4. Anyway, great essay can't wait to browse your playlists and start binging! Awesome job 😊

You're SO sweet for commenting:') and I'm so with you. Toni Collette is an unbelievable actress - she's been good in EVERY genre I've seen her in - but she ha SUCH a knack for horror! Genuinely really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment:) it means the world xx

i really appreciate your focus on lonliness and the lack of friends. this really caught my attention during the film as well. even when she calls her classmate from the past it wasnt to catch up and form a connection, she hoped she'd get a bit of that admiration she is missing after retirement (basically meeting a fan)

I wish the career choice had been modeling or acting. I am perplexed as to why this filmmaker chose aerobics? Not since the day of Jane Fonda has an aerobics show gone big? It feels so out of touch with modernity. I know the filmmaker is French, but even if she is aware of this and intentionally chose aerobics to add to the absurdity, I don't really think it works. Her visual style seems very OTT in a way that comes off as less truly horrific and more slap stick. I think this same story could have been much more affecting if it had been told in a more more realistic way without the over-stylization and camp level grotesque special affects. I also do not understand why we are not seeing through the POV of Sue when Sue is animated. What is the point if Elizabeth is not inside the body of Sue having all of her experiences? I actually thought this film works a little better as a cautionary tale for drug (substance) abuse. I can see Sue as the drive to "use" and Elizabeth's decaying body as the consequence of addiction that the user disregards in pursuit of a fix (or in this case solution).
@GlenCocoon26 күн бұрын
aerobics wasn't her chosen carreer path. she was given that show after her acting carreer. she actually has an oscar. harvey jokes she got it for her performance in 1933's "king kong" but of course not. we see her ten or whatever years before when she gets a star on the boulevard for her acting carrer and film fans being very enthusiastic about her, posing on the star in a pose that probably is from a key scene in the film

Horror has been mainstream for a long time. If it was not mainstream, we would not have had a Universal Monsterverse back in the early days of the talkies. Drive-in horror flicks were made for the average Baby Boomer teenager. I think you can make the case that grindhouse and more extreme horror has a niche audience, but the horror genre is made for the masses.
@hazelannarogersvideos18 күн бұрын
I agree! I suppose I mean that horror was far more subversive and not necessarily 'palatable' to prior generations, partially due to the fact that they lacked the exposure that we have to extreme visual media day in, day out - horror had a 'shock' value that is harder to replicate now without going into the extremes of body horror and psychological terror. But yes, of course, horror has always had a kind of mainstream appeal:) x thank you for commenting! x
@nevskislake18 күн бұрын
@@hazelannarogersvideos - I guess you have not heard about David Cronenberg or David Lynch's early work. Body horror and psychological horror are nothing new. Lol! Remember that the 70's is known as the "video nasties" era for a reason. There was a whole genre of horror films that came out of that decade revolving around shock value. Baby Boomers-the Vietnam War generation-were not just watching those films. They were making them. I know what you are trying to say is that younger people can easily access real extreme content via social media. A real beheading video, for example, is only a click away, but in terms of horror films of today, many older horror fans, myself included, feel that it is too tame. That's why it is so refreshing to see films like The Substance and Strange Darling and Anora get made today. We need movies that are still pushing the envelope.
